Definitely tragic, people want to paint her as some kind of nuke crazed harpy but the conviction to let go of herself to meet Radhan’s measure was goddamn inspiring. I mean, she’s up against Starscourge Radhan in a pre-mindrot state and still fought to the last.

Malicious.She betrayed everyone, including his twin. If Radahn had done that, he'd probably already be the bad guy. But when a beautiful naked woman does it, I guess it's okay in every one eyes. To give an example, Radahn conquered/destroying the stars to protect Sellia but since he is the black scary big man, everyone ignores this and thinks he did it to stop Ranni.

When Malenia stabs herself with her sword she snaps the Unalloyed Gold Needle that was in her chest. The reason I think it's there is because when you give Millicent the Needle she holds her hand above her chest in the same spot that Malenia stabbed herself with her sword. The fact the Needle is in the middle of where Malenia first bloomed further shows this is what likely happened.
@worldview6218

I think that’s true. There’s also the weird little cutscene where she sort of asks you to look away and the screen goes black which sort of implies that she was removing her clothing. I think the original spot that the unalloyed needle was to be placed was the eyes but it got added to the cut content because that’s pretty graphic but there’s a lot of focus on the eyes in this game. The golden runes, marika and radagons Scarseal resemble eyes, and also the whole thing with the shabriri grapes and the flame of frenzy inhabiting empty eyesockets

I like the contrast between the siofra river, flowing and theorized to be the source of the flowing sword style, and the lake of rot, standing, stagnant and indicative of rot and decay, the two fundamentally opposed. Stagnant water is also a breeding ground for pests such as mosquito larvae, while tending to kill off most aquatic life not acclimated to the non existent flow among other insects, so it also makes sense the pests would sprout from such sources while being deadly to most others. One last thing is the waterfowl style of swordsman shop probably generates alot of internal heat from the intensity and ferocity of the sword slashes and the whirling movements it requires, so that could also be an aspect of how it staves off the rot. Keep moving, don't stagnate, and burn from the inside out to stave off the rot, fitting for one such as Malenia.

I think why her scarlet aeonia was so devastating in caelid is because she had been holding it back up until that point for a long time. There's a sword monument in swamp of aeonia that reads "The battle of aeonia. Radahn and Malenia locked in a stalemate. Then the scarlet rot blooms". She bloomed in order to defeat him and Scarlet rot was key to that. Interesting to know that the battle continued for a while after she bloomed. There's a ghost in swamp of aeonia that is mesmerized by her splendid blade dancing amongst the scarlet rot. After a while the battle ended at a standstill with neither Malenia nor Radahn able to continue.

While I do agree it is tragic, I do not think it was worse for her to die at Radahn's hands since she is no longer honorable or respected in the Lands Between, evident by her abandoning the pride and honor from Millicent dialogue and an item description I cannot recall which one it was. Malenia to me is indeed a tragic character but that was not the best option she had since if we take Millocent as an example which she is quite close to Malenia in some form and some people may call her a manifestation of Malenia. If you sided with her, she dies an honorable death with the needle; if you sided with her sisters however, she will become a rot valkyrie which she dies at the end. Either way, Malenia lost the dignity and honor to meet Radahn's measure. As she defeated him with the scarlet rot, she no longer can stand upon her legs as the scarlet rot started to eat her away, that is why Finlay helped her, because the rot is eating her after the Aeonin war. The main reason we find her is she used Miquella's Haliqtree to heal herself, that is why we see swamps of rot, enemies of rot and a blooming plant of rot. It is tragic indeed but isnt justified, which leadsme to think Mohg plays a very big part in this war as he may blamed Radahn for it. There isnt any evidence to it but what Im sure of is Miquella was kidnapped after the shattering. When is a mystery but I do think it was him, as we have to remember that Elden Ring is written by GRR Martin as well as Mohg is no fool. He kidnapped Miquella, built his own Dynasty, fooling and manipulating Tarnished for the Formless Mother and even perhaps knew how to make wars between the Demigods remaining. Mentioning not we are working at his service with the invasions.

Yeah I think one of the aspects of Millicent that isn’t discussed is how comparatively easy it was for Millicent to die. Millicent isn’t condemning Malenia, she is mourning her. She sacrificed her entire being, something she had fought so hard to keep. Millicent, while definitely tragic, also has no real stakes outside of her. My argument in my video is that Malenia had no chance of being able to die to keep herself intact, too much was at stake.

@@terminalarray1047 While I do agree, however, it was no excuse and a short sighted one from her. It is not only a negative for only a region, but if we look passed Miquella as well, it is a very negative impact as well as techniqully a defeat. Deep down, she regreted to bloom upon a mighty warrior and a noble one. He respected her and he may even spoke to her in the battle itself. She gained nothing but guilt because the pride she abandoned, the destruction of her warriors and her promised land and cure. She may have trusted Mohg's words only for it to be regretful. From her body language, she is defeated. From her music, she wished to be dead by regreting the war, Miquella and recovering from the Haliqtree itself. It was fault of her but I can understand since she was in the heat of the battle. Overall, I really love your comment!
@AndrewThePoet
Жыл бұрын
@@LoreHunter I would quite disagree and even would say the opposite. Her death may be was a positive. Let me explain: 1. We find her in a defeated pose, the music is more somber, sad and to some degree, whishes to die, especially at the end of the track where it sounds positive in a way that makes her finally bresth which due to the rot, guilt from the war and free from burden. The reason why I say this because she abandoned her pride and dignity through removing the needle, a filthy threatening attack used upon a mighty and honorable warrior, she either was convinced that Miquella was in the hand of Radahn which Mohg in my opinion is behind all this (since we have to remember, GRRM wrote the story so I think it is very possible) or she was at war and once back, she found Miquella no longer there which to me isnt the most logical but possible. 2. Even if the stakes were high, it was actually for her to die a noble death rather than agonising herself, wear a mantle of burden by Lands Between blaming her, killing a noble warrior without digniry and most importantly, runining the very land that her brother promised. She to some degree healed from the Haliqtree and used it to stand upon her legs once more. It is why we see the Haliqtree filled with waterfalls of Rot, enemies of rot and plants of rot. To me, even the stakes were, she chose the worst outcome. That is why I argue she is defeated mentally. However, it is still tricky, because the kingdom wouldve been left unprotected, BUT, she shouldve fought Radahn in another Region since she herself came to Radahn which it may implay two things: Mohg kidnapped Miquella and put the guilt upon Radahn. Or, she may planned ahead without her guidence of her brother which led her to attack Radahn first just in case which is to me most unlikely since Radahn's only known big invasion was at Leyndell, other than that, he may fought small wars and never bothered. So to me, Malenia's bloom techniqully is a defeat for her mentallity. I would even argue that everyone would respect her if she actually died by the hands of Radahn and may even Radahn would greatly respect her since she wouldve died honorably as well as the Lands Between would respect her, however, with the bloom, it no longer is the case and she abandoned the pride and the needle. I respect the video you made and I love your content! As for Millicent, I do agree bht

Did Malenia and Radahn fight because by stopping the stars movements, he stopped the eclipse that was supposed to save godwyn the golden? Did the meteor that exposes Nokstella pose more of a problem than those who live in death? Because that seems like the only reason he wouldn't give in. The pest straight up tell you they were abandoned by their mother Melania, at the fallout of Millicent's quest, having sided with her, insinuating they didn't exist until her first bloom so they had to of made the pilgrimage to the lake, but the butterflys are interesting, because even if they're drawn to sources of rot there's no reason for them to leave calid, or even aonia, unless they can be drawn to stronger sources of rot, or Melania's bloom was simply the first documented discovery of the butterflys. I think it's worth mentioning... As someone who has known multiple people with various degenerative illnesses.... They don't think about it constantly. Sure, they're aware, and for many of them, they are in constant pain. But that pain has been SO constant, their illness so long an affliction on them... That they don't conciously notice it any longer. They notice spikes, they notice changes, but the day to day? It's just part of life, for them. Like someone living near a landfill not noticing the smell after long enough, or someone getting used to a train that always runs in the middle of the night and no longer waking. People can and will adapt to most anything, given enough time and consistency. Maybe, if Malenia had stopped and thought things through, she'd not have taken that risk in the battle. Maybe she'd have realized that it could've caused such devastation. But for Malenia, she has been fighting the Rot every day of her life. It's not something she does conciously any more, it's automatic... And because of that, it would never have even crossed her mind to consider that what she was about to do might release the Rot she'd held at bay for so long.

Dig it man I feel like since the pre release videos of Elden ring you have come a long way this was fantastic! You were my daily countdown every day up to release of Elden ring. So I think that the aeonian bloom was a two fold action as in it was tragic in that it was an act of desperation when faced with possible defeat by Radahn but I also think it was kind of malicious in that it was an act of desperation only because her pride was too great to accept defeat and that she’d rather doom all the lands of caeled. Unless it was somehow involuntary and was a unconscious reaction as a survival instinct.

Yeah it’s the last bit that I was wrestling with, and it’s kind of where I fall. Malenia fights her whole life against the rot, and I think it is more compelling and tragic to suggest that if Malenia puts down the blade she dies, and that by being unable to the rot consumes her. In that sense, I think it is at least relatable to imagine not wanting to be defeated and die yourself and likely everyone you’ve ever cared about, and that’s on top of it being ambiguous if Malenia knew the rot was capable of creating the scarlet bloom.

@@LoreHunter (there is a summary at the end, the sign will be 77 although I highly recommend reading the whole thing since there is something I havent wrote in the summary part) I wouldnt say that is the case with the last bit, all the Cleanrot were with her to the last bit and Miquella did a favor to all who came to the Haliqtree unaccept by the Golden Order, which was under the protectipn of Malenia. Not to mention Malenia had no defeat, though I do not think it is justifyable for Malenia to destroy a whole region which will view her as evil and malicious when infact, it is tragic which she gave herself to the rot amd threw all dignity and pride only to meet Radahn's measure. I also dont think it was a good thing for Malenia either, she seems rather sad, depressed, asleep, sourful face and a somber one, especially with the music. Let me explain: She may have fought for Miquella sonce perhaps Mohg maybe the reason of the whole war (we have to remember ER is written by GRRM so it may be expected) but at the same time there is no evidence to suggest that but it may be logical. Killing a noble and dignified warrior with the rot inside her which from Millicent and the Lands Between point of view is unhonorable and throwing her pride off which will view her as negative interms of the Lands Between. I also think it was a losing war, especially with Malenia. She gained nothing but to let the rot eat her away, as what Gideon said which he was surprised that he found Malenia is still alive after all, which leading me to think that the Haliqtree made her at least resist the Rot which explains why we find lake of rot and enemies from rot as well as the Haliqtree doesnt have Miquella either from Mohg blaming Radahn before the war or after the war. Millicent to me is a manifestation to Malenia and her sisters. The reason why I think so is how they fight off the rot with either the needle or the Haliqtree, and also evident by Millicent dialogue is to give Malenia the needle by saying it is a dignified way to protect yourself from the rot, however, she abandoned that pride to meet Radahn's measure which led her regret it and rather than diying a true death, she lived an agonising life and recovering from the Haliqtree, the very thing that her brother wanted to cure her is now ruined by her rot, which also again bestowed even more burden unto her. Also, if you sided with Millicent, she dies, but an honorable one when she tries to push against the rot, but if you sided with her sisters, she dies as a rot Valkyrie, which tells me two things: If Malenia never gave to the rot, she wouldve died an honorable death and may be remembered as a true inspiration for Radahn and the Lands Between, but if she gave to the rot, it would only double down on her burden, killing a noble warrior with a filthy move, and the Lands Between would view her as unhonorable warrior only for her to live an agonising life and using the Haliqtree as the last breath. To me, Malenia is too blinded by her resistance of the rot that to the point of her dignity of not losing to anyone only to resist the Rot made it all the worse to give to the rot. A tragic one, a very tragic one but it is not a justifyable act if we look at Radahn and Caelid. It wasnt an honorable war for Malenia and moreso a defeat for her and the Haliqtree. (77)Yes, it is a tragic one, but it was the worst option she couldve done. 1. She gave herself to the rot to meet Radahn's measure, which led her to abandon the pride and dignity, which explains why we find her look like a defeated warrior rather than a victories one 2. Miquella is no longer being found. Either from Mohg and blaming Radahn at the beginning of the war or after the war. 3.She no longer can recover since the needle is quite frankly broken after the bloom, not to mention she cannot stand which leads to finlay helping her and rot will start to devour her away, which she used the Haliqtree to at least recover. 4.She killed a mighty and noble warrior with an undignified attack and destorying a whole biome, which Radahn respected her greatly by not attacking her and he may was regretting to warring against her but he needed to defend his land and there is quite frankly isnt evidence for Radahn having a very bad relationship with Malenia but this is just speculation since he may wanted to put his weapon aside and speak with Malenia which again leading me to think Mohg is behind all this by taking Miquella and blame Radahn. Overall, she is faulty and nevrt was an excuse for her to bloom.

I think the wording of Blue Dancer Charm is intentionally ambiguous. People assume that he fought the God of Rot and sealed it, but what if it refers to sealing (temporary as we see now) the God of Rot that is not inside Malenia by teaching her the art to control it?

In many cultures, dying by your own hand before your enemy can take you is an ultimate "f--ck you." Which could be one reason she stabbed herself. And as many pointed out, Radahn was trying to give Malenia a chance to give up. They probably respected one another as warriors at least, even if they didn't wholly see each other as siblings. And I think Radahn loved his father Radagon so much, he wasn't about to kill Radagon's red-haired daughter. I think she did it on purpose and she knew exactly what would happen. I see it as a momentary loss of sight on her own part. And the guilt tore her soul into the daughters of rot. Just as anyone who does anything outside their normal character will feel their soul torn. When she's talking to you, she's saying some cryptic lines about how her flesh becomes gold, indicating her continual dependency on unalloyed gold, but how it has become ultimately futile. The last act that Malenia does in the current game, is saving you from the frenzied flame. If you help Millicent, Millicent will give you the golden needle and if you give that to Malenia... at least what's left of her after you battle... she will give you Miquilla's needle in return.

The whole "strength good, dex bad" crowd have been too dominant in the fandom and they will shit on anyone not buff enough. People call Radagon a femboy just because he's thinner than Godfrey. The dude is jacked beyond belief and he's been shattered. If he was played by a real life actor you'd need a HUGE guy to be Radagon. Nuking an entire country/city of mostly innocent people and proud warrior, her Half brother, and her own troops, and condemning them to suffer the worst disease in the world, against her brother-savior Miquella's will, out of spite at worse, out of pride at best And completely willingly... She was on a mission, I give you that, but it wasn't just a tragedy. If someone knew what the rot could do, it was her. The battle of Aeonia was a calculated massacre, a genocide,out of desperation and or pride. She wasn't sure Miquella was there, she just went in there for blood, excusing herself behind Miquella's safety. You can empathize with her situation in life, but that was just pointless slaughter No negotiation, no questions, search and destroy. So obsessed with her mission, she subconsciously became the rot she hated, a scourge of sickness and decay in the world

My theory: unless dlc reveals a location where the god of Rot was sealed away, i place all my bets on Sage Gowry being the blind swordsman. He "sealed away" the god in himself. Which might have seemed like a good idea at the time. Perhaps the only way. But it corrupted the swordsman over time. Now, the image of the man on that talisman is not getting enough attention. He's wielding an Estoc. And he also has a prosthetic arm. I think the god of rot is raising new generations of Rot Bloom events. Gowry isnt even there. His physical form is somewhere else. He's seemingly blind and his arms dont work. And who trained milicent and her sisters to fight like that, with flowing weapons. All weapons that fight rot. He trained 4 dangerous killers. Gowry is being underestimated.

@@arthurdossantos6826 yes yes these combined are helpful! Blue dancer charm: "...[a fairy] in legend bestowed a flowing sword upon a blind swordsman. Blade in hand, the swordsman sealed away an ancient god - a god that was Rot itself." Lake of Rot map: "It is said, that the divine essence of an outer god is sealed away in this land." It's all "legend", and "it is said", and way in the past "ancient" likely when farum azula was only starting to rise. Important for interpretation, the first flavor-text explains that the god is the rot; there is no singular personification. Important in the second flavor-text, "...divine essence of an outer god is sealed away..." Not the outer god itself. Important to note, we find that the confessors certainly did manage to contain the essence of rot given that crepus black-key crossbow shoots black-key bolts which injects scarlet rot into the target. A confessor is also found with the scorpion dagger on him. So the ambiguity of this god being actually sealed away how we imagine it, is highly suspect. When you kill gowry, usually, he is possessing a pest, not even there. And even if you kill him proper, he simply explains he cannot die... He isn't normalllllll pretty sure he's hosting the rot god and ever pushing his daughters forward to cover the world in rot. Thank you for engaging lol 👍🔥

Radahn was giving her that work and she had to use her trap card. From all that I know they was having a honorable duel but because she couldn't beat him conventionally she pulled that move and won that way . She tucked her pride in knowing how she won wasnt how she wanted to win but radahn would have best her And her pride Milicent herself was taken out of her when the needle got away from her thru the fight . So milcent the pride of malenia needed to give her her pride and dignity back that she tucked to beat radahn . That shows you low-key how powerful radahn was . To be fair to malenia she is powerful as well since she's fighting with an incurable disease. So it's almost as fair as can be . Great characters.

Very well put together, but I disagree with quite a lot in this video. Firstly I'm still not convinced that the aeonia bloom was her first bloom, in fact her bloom during the boss fight very much seems like the third bloom, which would make the aeonia bloom second. Nevertheless, Milicent outright states that malenia abandoned her pride to meet radahn's measure which makes it certain that she didn't accidentally or unknowingly bloom, and she also had to physically remove the needle, so it couldn't be her inner power surfacing to protect hersel. Maybe she didn't know the full extent of it, but she certainly knew that it would be powerful enough to incapacitate a being as immensely powerful as radahn, which means it would also certainly spew indiscriminate doom to everyone in the area. Secondly, I don't think this has anything to do with undefeated pride or the pride of being miquela's blade either, it was merely a question of victory. Radahn and miquela were the only demigods with both the power and ambition to claim the elden ring for themselves, eliminating radahn was a matter of survival for miquela, malenia had no choice but to win, and she did eliminate radahn in a way. Her abandonment of her pride and the fact that all of it was for naught as miquela was kidnapped my mohg are certainly tragic, but not in a sympathetic way. She was a good and honorable person forced to commit an unspeakable attrocity that went against the wishes of her brother for what she perceived as the greater good. It was both tragic and malicious, made even more tragic by the fact that in the end all of it was useless. No matter how you cut it, she unleashed a genocide upon caelid and allowed the re-emergence of an ancient evil, and that's certainly not sympathetic no matter her reasoning, and she probably knows it. Extra notes: While at large scarlet rot seems to be an ancient legend, marais had plenty of evidence of it. From the antspur rapier itself to the poison sludge all over his castle that seems to be either an ancient version of the rot or a watered down version of it, he had no reason to question its existence. I agree that the aeonian butterflies dont originate from malenias wings, and although I also agree that they spawn from the rot, I don't think they're part of the natural fauna of rot. Along with the aeonian butterflies associated with malenia, there exist the nascent butterflies associated with miquela and the smoldering butterflies that can be associated with another (theorized) child of Marika, Melina. This makes me lean more towards the butterflies being manifestations of the powers, curses and transformations associated with each child of marika and radagon than any kind of naturally occurring lifeforms.

Good thoughts and good read! At the end of the day, there is no denying that Aeonia was a catastrophe for the Lands Between. I've provided my case (although all these wonderful comments make me want to do a follow-up) for why I think Malenia's agency was limited in the matter, which I think ties into the theme of meddling outer gods pretty well. Scarlet Rot is a curse for Malenia, and adds to a pattern of the gods/demigods of this world being at the whims of forces even greater than themselves. And I just want to highlight that because Malenia is talked about with the bloom obviously, but we can't forget the meddling beings who accursed her blood and to what end (which to me is an expansion of their domain in the LB at the very least).
@playmsbk
Жыл бұрын
@@LoreHunter Of course, no matter how salty I am about malenia, I could never call her evil, and her actions are understandable though very flawed. As for the meddling of outer gods, it is the root of most if not all problems presented in-game, but their influence on their vessels' minds seems to be nonexistent. Marika has acted against the greater will in multiple occasions, malenia spent her whole life fighting the rot and i don't see the whole blood lord thing going too well if the formless mother chose to commune with morgott instead of mohg. Imo the rot was just lucky that malenia found herself in such a desperate situation, and is banking on that happening again, in fact it's quite similar to gowry's plans for Milicent. A sidenote. My comments might sound combative and negative, but I wouldn't want this to dissuade you in any way. I love all soulsborne lore creators, but your content in particular stands out for me. Your format is very well put together but still discussion based and more relaxed, which always inspires me to look at the lore myself more critically and engage in discussion. Me disagreeing here isn't a result of you not making good stuff, it's the exact opposite, your stuff is so good it invites me to engage with it myself. Keep doing what you're doing brother.

@@playmsbk No worries, and thanks for the very kind comments. I love having a good lore and story discussion! And I'm always really happy when I get a thoughtful and well-articulated comment. And we totally agree that Malenia found herself in a bad situation and the rot as this corruption was given the opportunity to capitalize, but that it was still Malenia in control. Part of the experiment with this video, un-stated, is that she is clearly marketed and portrayed in a heroic light. Although her actions are reprehensible, I just feel like there is still supposed to be a level of heroism and personal tragedy in her actions. It feels too simple given her history and character up to this point to say that she took the easy road, that she resorted to cheap tactics out of pride. What I was wrestling with, or hoping to explore and convey is that she did not want to give into Scarlet Rot one bit, she abhors it. She gave herself and her pride to the rot, something she fought her entire life against, because she felt her situation was so dire. To me, succumbing to the rot would be the last thing she would ever want to do. IDK if I totally conveyed that, and I'm still gnawing on it, but its so cool regardless lol. I think perhaps character motivations could be clearer in the story, and would certainly make this situation easier to parse, but as it is it is compelling to me. Also, just a small note for clarity. I follow the blooms as Smoughtown presents them in his wonderful video. 1st: Aeonia 2nd: Mid-way into the fight 3rd: End of the fight. So that means she has bloomed 3 times, but she has not emerged from her 3rd bloom as a full goddess.

@@LoreHunter agreed totally, in fact I'd say elden ring goes out of its way to give a heroic side to almost all of its main bosses, unlike previous games. For example mohg is especially heinous, at least for the values we hold in the real world, yet his origins make it hard to not empathize with him at least a little and he seems to actually love and value his subjects, making a home for those who have been broken or outcast by the golden order. Of course he's still a kidnapper ***phile who wants to transform the world into a hellscape, but the heroic side is there to be found if you search. How did I miss that video? It's really hard to argue against smoughtown's timeline, though I don't know if I'm totally ready to accept it. Thanks for referring me.

@@LoreHunter I agree with your takes LH. A lot of people seem to believe Malenia was just a sore loser for using her scarlet aeonia, ignoring all the nuance present. This was no honor battle/duel, it was an all out war with evrything on the line. I've seen people say she should have just retreated but I don't see how that was even an option. People fail to comprehend the nature of her Blooming. It was a major decision for her to remove the needle, she herself despised the rot for it had taken her arms, limbs and eyes. She is portrayed as a heroic character but not one without flaws, her 1 move corrupted caelid but at the same time she was fighting for a good cause. She fought for her brother who housed those who were shunned from the golden order like the misbegotten, albinaurics, etc. These creatures are also seen worshipping the twins statues at the Haligtree. It is important to note that there's no needle in her when we fight her, she's been holding onto her self out of sheer willpower and manages to give the tarnished one of the greatest battles of their lives. She has my respect for the fact that she still manages to fight like a badass despite being consumed by the rot. I just don't like how her character is interpreted as an evil entity by a lot of people and that Radahn was the good guy. For all we know his conquest of the stars made Malenia March to caelid. There's actually a few evidence supporting that. She's no Saint but she's not evil either. Overall I feel she's one of the more fleshed out character in the game and i hope from would expand more on her and miquella if they were to release a dlc focusing on the latter.
