Cities are being invaded by new electric forms of transportation. In this video, I break down the most popular options to determine which is best for you. Thanks to Riptide for their support in this episode also, learn more about them here teslanomics.co...
Electric Scooters and Electric Skateboards are invading cities across the United States and the world. I happen to ride an Electric Skateboard about 1mi to my office from where I park, goofy helmet and all.
The question I kept wondering is, which of these is cheaper, and is there a clear winner?
Unfortunately, as always, it depends...
If you're comfortable on a skateboard (as is any kid that grew up in the late 80's should be) then it turns out the Electric Skateboards are a much more convenient and economical choice. They do come with a higher up-front cost, however.
If you're uncomfortable on a skateboard or just need to get a few blocks across town occasionally, the scooters are a better choice.
The challenge with the scooters I found is that you often need to stop at lights and obey traffic laws which most people don't want to do. This can lead to expensive tickets as well as a higher cost per mile because you pay by the minute, not by distance.

// Electric Skateboard History (wikipedia)
The design of a modern electric skateboard has improved significantly since the technology first hit the market.[12] Batteries, however, seem to still be a limiting factor to a majority of modern electric skateboard designs. Since range and speed are determined by the size, power, and number of battery cells, many electric skateboard manufacturers use longboard decks so that they can fit more batteries into their electric skateboards. Originally, electric skateboards were made larger to be able to fit the batteries and hardware inside. Today many electric skateboards are being made with sizes similar to Penny skateboards, although this does limit the number of battery cells that can be used.
The first electric skateboards were originally designed to ride on the same surfaces as bikes and cars. While many people used them primarily for transportation, others used them for cruising and sporting. Newer models and designs have been made to cater towards the "adrenaline junkie", with off-road style models. The off-road style boards have larger tires in comparison to smaller skateboard wheels; are able to traverse grass, gravel, dirt, and hard sand with ease; and are often seen at low tide on the beach.
A majority of electric skateboards are operated with a hand-held remote control with a throttle. The throttle moves the rider forward. Most electric skateboards have braking and reverse functionality, so pulling back on the throttle will initiate the brakes and eventually propel the user backward.
// History of Bird Scooters (wikipedia)
Bird was founded in 2017 by Travis VanderZanden, formerly an executive at Lyft and at Uber. It had its Series A round of funding in February 2018, raising $15 million led by Craft Ventures; this was followed by a Series B round in March for $100 million, led by Index Ventures and Valor Equity Partners, and a venture round in May for $150 million from Sequoia Capital, valuing the company at over $1 billion, the first scooter share company to hit that mark.[1][3]
// History of Riptide Electric Skateboards (rideriptide.com)
Riptide Electric was started in San Diego by Eric Birkemeier and a group of boardsport-loving friends. Between surf sessions and trips to the mountains, together they grew a passion for electric skateboards but recognized a hole in the market: every board with enough power to put a smile on their faces was way longer than the penny boards and short boards they favored. Leveraging their knowledge of the industry through Eric's experience running Shredlights (headlights and tail lights for skateboards), they began designing and engineering a project that became the Riptide R1.
