I think the darker parts are where the copper has oxidated. The nickel plating typically won’t adhere as well (or as much) to the oxidated areas as these areas are slightly less conductive. Very cool to see how you did this, It’s awesome that you dove into this project. I’m an Engineer (Electrical) and a Vintage Star Wars and TF collector and would’ve never thought to try to do this. Great Job and Thanks for showing us. I’m with you, I like the kind of weathered and oil stained look- especially on the smoke stacks. Very Kind Regards, Pat

Shame you did not go on to chrome plate- the nickel is not going to match the chrome appearance wise- nickel is a straw tinted silver colour, the chrome is much brighter, so if chrome plated, it would look much brighter. The lumpiness was down to the buffing wheel being too slow, on full bench mounted buffing machine, that would buff to a flat mirror in a few minutes, it kind of "smooshes" all the copper (which is a soft plaible plate) into a uniform flatness, which you would then nickel and chrome plate. The dark bits were down to the fact that I would say you brush at about 1/3 the speed that you need to (the instructions say 3 swipes per second minimum) but as you say, it is all a learning process!! Plus the dark bits on the n ickel make it look like oil stained steel on those chimney stacks!

Great work! I know that it time consuming, but you will get faster and your results will only get better. Recommendation: you should try your hand at a C3PO or a Death Star Droid. Maybe a side by side of a worn vintage example that you try to fix and one of those modern pieces that are molded out of that awful looking gray or golden-ish plastic that you improve.

It's nice to know this is possible as I've tried using chrome paint which certainly isn't chrome when it dries lol...... but looked at the prices of these kits and I don't think I could afford it..... but who knows for the future now I know this is possible for my custom transformers I make..... great video

Thanks Dave. I had toyed (no pun intended!) with this for a while, but was put off by the multiple layers required to get it done and how it would affect the details on the piece being plated. I've found the chrome pens are too susceptible to touch. Unfortunately, there's no way to lacquer it. I think the best solution would be the chemical chrome spray, as it goes on much more evenly and would enable you to do Prime's upper legs, as you could just mask off the surround bits. It's a bit pricey, but then the kit for plating is, too.

I know I’m 4 years late to this party but 1) thank you for this. I had no idea they came out with conductive paint to electroplate plastic. This should be amazing on some of my custom action figures. And 2) have you since this video Learned about using a soldering iron to remove the rivets on the wheel rims and any other toys that have rivets holding in the parts??

Don't give up on the mirror coat dream, it seems to be a problem with the paints instead of the plating that's making the detail a little less nice. Try some thinner coats next time.

GALAXIE 67 Electroplating is not the same as what Hasbro uses. They use Vacuum Metalization which only uses a single coat of aluminum particles which allows for greater detail.

Hmm… Honestly, I think you would have had better results using a Molotow pen and cracking it open, pour the paint into an airbrush gun and air brushed that on the parts.

I swear by those Molotow pens these days, I know the issue about fading thru touch but I'm sure a clear lacquer would shield that, love your vids tho TP

Ah that's not good news, I haven't tried it myself but figured it could work, maybe there's an application method that avoids that, a go between layer of something that keeps the solvent from the paint, interesting topic tho, I'm sure plenty of us want to know a good way around it, thanks for the response

As long as the chrome remains soft, nothing put on top of it will firm it up. It's like painting on top of clay. It will always be clay. Just trying to save from disappointing results.

@LMUstacker

the pen looks better, the plating is more long lasting, hard to decide. How strong is the color left by the pen? is it like the old uniposca, coming off with a nail, or it's more like the indelible black marker? Does it look really bad after you touch the pen's paint, does it become just like plain grey?
@toypolloi

+Marcello Catalano The pen does turn to just grey if you touch it too much. It's just for display only.

I tried it once on the backpack part of a Powermaster for Transformers. It worked fine and became nice and shiny when I used the spray, however if I used a brush to apply the paint of the spray on another figure it became dull, so I think the secret is to spray it.
