Extremely high based dry thunderstorms as a result of an upper trough pushing into a plume of extremely hot air, complete with steep mid level lapse rates, from the continent. This was the hottest day ever recorded in the UK, and the first time in recorded history that 40 degrees Celsius was reached here. The thunderstorms brought much milder (although still hot) air, but produced very little rainfall for the parched vegetation, less than 2mm - and likely started some fires too with the lightning strikes.
Closest strike is a -88kA monster just over a mile away.
As the storm leaves, anvil crawlers can be seen over a field.
