Learn how to build a home flight simulator www.rogerdodger...
In this short flight, I’ll take off from an orbital space station and land on a planet’s surface. The software is Elite Dangerous Horizons. I’m in the Amun system at Moresby Dock and we will be flying to Judson Relay on the surface of the nearby planet.
This is not specifically a tutorial on playing Elite Dangerous, there are already a lot of videos about that. Here I’m actually just testing the lighting and sound to determine the best way to make videos like this.

You see, when you use three displays like I have here, it’s difficult to take good video. If I use a lamp to brighten up the room, I have to be really careful about where I locate the camera so I don’t see a reflection in one of the displays.
Here I’m exiting the space station and once I get far enough away, I’ll engage the Frame Shift Drive and we’ll get to our destination in no time. You can see Judson Relay highlighted on the planet there.
The popularity of Elite Dangerous is just incredible to me, Star Citizen is very popular too. Unbelievable. You see, back in 2012 I tried to enter the space flight simulator market when I created a Keyboard Modification project for a similar game.
That product failed badly, there was not enough interest and I only made two sales. Only two. All the time and resources I put into that project were wasted, but that’s the risk you take with a new product.
So I walked away from space flight simulators and I have not looked at them since.
My spaceship is decelerating here, by the way. It’s technical. It’s a rocket science thing.
Now remember, back to my story, I produced that Keyboard Mod video for a different game and that was a long time ago in 2012. Many things have changed since then.
Since that time, Elite Dangerous was funded by a successful crowd-funding campaign, and a similar game, Star Citizen, they broke records with their crowd-funding successes. So now, space flight simulators are huge. Very popular.
So check it out. Now I’m flying a spaceship. It’s kinda nice to zip around the galaxy in hyperspace.
The displays I’m using are three 32” HDTVs. I’m running them from a three year old graphics card: an Nvidia GeForce GTX 650.
I’m using a Saitek X-52 Pro for the joystick and throttle. They are attached to the standard DIY Floor Unit that we’ve used for years.
I’m using rudder pedals, because of course I am.
I built a keyboard modification because I can’t remember the button assignments for some functions.
The control tower, or whoever, assigned us a specific landing pad. That’s it right there. And now I’ll use some maneuvering thrusters to land the spaceship.
And I welcome you to Judson Relay. Enjoy your stay.
