The opening line on Clementine "They're waking you up to close the bar / The street's wet you can tell by the sound of the cars" always stuck with me. Like, who even thinks of that? It's so simple but vivid and immediately understandable. He had a real talent for putting you in a specific place/mood and he makes it feel effortless, especially on this album.

So much good imagery in his music. I've always liked how the chorus is just Elliott singing what the person is hearing in the bar. It all works together so well

i adore this album. i think it's almost intoxicating how pure and simple everything he writes is, but it's things i know i'd never be able to form on my own despite it being so simple and beautiful. there's an interview where he performs clementine and everybody around him just falls silent because of how beautiful it is. so sad how much drugs can mess with someone mentally and it's painfully clear on this album. he'll always hold such a special place in my heart, glad you gave the album a listen.

YES MORE ELLIOTT, thank you for doing more, you're thoughts on the lyrics are very deep and I like the way you explain things a lot, if you ever want to you should check out some of his live performances, the emotion is crazy, one of my favourites is Elliott playing clementine live on a show called breakfast time. He sounds so smooth and its fun to watch the faces of the people in awe by him lol

Elliott Smith is one of those rare artists whose entire discography feels like must-listen stuff. Each album of his is so great in its own distinctive way. I'd definitely recommend listening to more of Elliotts later work. He diversifies his instrumental palette a lot more and becomes a lot more sonically ambitious, on top of his stellar lyricism and immensely personable vibe. I'd love for you to react to Figure 8 in the future. Definitely a top 3 album of his in my opinion, and on certain days might just be my favourite of his

Fun fact about Christian brothers. The song describes his childhood while living with his stepfather before moving to Portland to live with his dad. His stepfather struggled with drug abuse and was a major alcoholic, causing him to physically abuse Elliott when he was little. The song is about Elliott being afraid that he will turn into his stepfather if he continues with the alcohol and drugs

yay :•] my three most coveted reactions from u would be funeral by arcade fire, this is happening by LCD soundsystem, and just got back from the discomfort we’re doing alright by Brave Little Abacus i think u probably know all about the first two but a description of the third would be: a progressive emo album with amazingly expressive playing and raw vocals; the most influential album to the current state of emo by a country mile.

def go into Elliott's discography either/or and XO are both really good as well I'd definitely recc those after though ofc roman candle, and figure 8 are both amazing as well, i just think either or and XO might be better introductory albums to kinda go off of S/T If you want another type of indie singer song writer album to tear you to pieces emotionally definitely give Hospice by The Antlers a listen. Lyrically, it's a concept album, and both unmetaphorically and metaphorically the concept is just crushing. Plus the music is really good as well.

If I remember correctly Illinois by Sufjan Stevens didn’t really click with you but I would definitely recommend you to listen to Carrie&Lowell by him. I think it’s fair to say that Eliot Smith was a huge inspiration for Sufjan but nevertheless, he always manages to sound super unique and that project really showcases that!

Love that this came up in my feed randomly. Been a big Elliott Smith fan for about 20 years. 2 days ago it was the 20th anniversary of his last concert. You can go down the rabbit hole with him. While some tracks may not be as good as others there is always a craftsmanship behind and wonderful lyrics that he likely spent years writing and rewriting. He was incredibly prolific in his short time on earth. He wrote 6 albums of material in high school which was released among fan groups earlier this year. Who writes that much music in high school. If you ever keep going with him, in addition to his 6 solo albums during his lifetime and one posthumous release, he also did 3 albums with his band Heatmiser. Mic City Sons is quite good. And lastly there are 4 albums worth of completed material which has never had an official release called the Grand Mal Archives if you want to get deep. There are some absolute gems in there. Edit next day: I didn't quite finish this yesterday> I have to say you are really good at the analysis of many of these tracks. I had no idea for years what he meant by the white lady. I had always thought it was some kind of ghost or specter and here you get it the first go. This imagery is reused in the song Kings Crossing from On a Basement on a Hill. If you have never listened to that one I'd love to see you try to break that song down line for line.

How are you so good at analyzing lyrics? That's one of the coolest things about your reactions. You're almost always on point about them even though you never know their context beforehand. Great reaction as always, btw, love Elliott Smith and this album especially (might be my favourite of his but idk, Either/Or is at least really close) And some recommendations for you: LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver; a modern classic and one of the most influential indie '00s albums Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica; I know you weren't super impressed with The Lonesome Crowded West but this one is more gentle, if I can say so, and I'm sure you'll enjoy it more Nirvana - Nevermind; I bet you've heard of this album but not sure if you've actually listened to anything from it besides Smells like Teen Spirit, if not, definitely worth checking out!

I’ve realized that a lot of Elliott’s songs are from an observers perspective, he paints a picture of a setting kinda like how he does in Clementine or rose parade, and then sings about the characters in those settings, it’s literally like their are little worlds and stories and environments in each of his songs

This is a sleeper Elliot Smith album for me, I keep going to others of his and when I come back to this one I remember how good it is. The Biggest Lie is in contention for favorite song of his. After watching the NIN video on my PC and not phone I realized I'd recommended someone you have on your wall, I'll try to avoid that this time. Here's a new batch or albums to skip over: Grizzly Bear - Yellow House, Mr. Bungle - California. If you want to stick with the dark lyrics buried in cheerful guitar and singing try The National Lights - The Dead Will Walk, Dear. If you want to totally change direction and listen to something weird, try a Neil Cicirega album, I'd go with Mouth Silence.

I think Clementine is the person who fell asleep drunk in the bar. That’s why the bar tender is saying sorry for having to kick her out as he turns the open sign to closed. I think the verses are about her and the middle part is about her partner.
