And the thing that strikes me now about the chorus that seems so obvious now, but I'm a hell of a lot older than when this first came out, is thinking about the story that the yellow brick road comes from. Kansas FARM girl traveling the road with these strange and damaged people she meets along the way. She just wants to go home to the farm again, and leave the magical but sometimes scary land of Oz behind forever, but to do that she has to find the END of the yellow brick road at the Emerald City, and then her journey doesn't end there either. Her future is BEYOND the yellow brick road, and as the other man said, "life is what happens while you're making other plans".

From Songfacts: Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics to this and most of Elton's other songs. He often seems to write about Elton, but this one appears to be about himself. The lyrics are about giving up a life of opulence for one of simplicity in a rural setting. Elton has enjoyed a very extravagant lifestyle, while Taupin prefers to keep it low key. Speaking about the song, Taupin said: "It's funny, but there are songs that I recall writing as if it was yesterday. And then there are those I have absolutely no recollection of, whatsoever. In fact, I'd have to say that for the most part, if someone was to say that the entire Yellow Brick Road album was actually written by someone else, I might be inclined to believe them. I remember being there, just not physically creating. There was a period when I was going through that whole 'got to get back to my roots' thing, which spawned a lot of like-minded songs in the early days, this being one of them. I don't believe I was ever turning my back on success or saying I didn't want it. I just don't believe I was ever that naïve. I think I was just hoping that maybe there was a happy medium way to exist successfully in a more tranquil setting. My only naiveté, I guess, was believing I could do it so early on. I had to travel a long road and visit the school of hard knocks before I could come even close to achieving that goal. So, thank God I can say quite categorically that I am home."
From what I understand this song is about brothers one was enlisted to go to war on foreign land and the other was left behind and how he misses his brother

So I heard this song completely different than you. I've always envisioned him singing about an unsophisticated country boy who's gone to the city, hooked up with someone, and become a "kept man." After a time of being treated as a boy toy, he becomes disillusioned and decides to return back home to his simple life. I may be completely off base, but that's how it's always come off to me.

The main theme of the song is in the part of the verse “you can’t plant me in your penthouse. I’m going back to my plough.” He isn’t going to let anyone tell him how to live and won’t allow fame and fortune to define who he is. His future lies beyond the yellow brick road. Back to his roots. He may have drifted away from them after getting a taste of the high life but he knows he needs to go back in order to feel fulfilled and happy again. "I bet they'll shoot down the plane" means - the media execs will do anything to try and prevent you from getting out so they can keep riding the gravy train.
