You made a good point. You can let the flare sit in the wood and leave it to do other work.

sounds like a great set up, a bow drill is always a last resort but since it is a last resort it is worth knowing how to do in the off chance that you may be in a situation that that is your only option.

...and if you want to keep it smaller than Gav's fire, or have limited wood you can put wet stuff next to the fire and it will start to dry out. Then you add it bit by bit.

You should be able to cut the flare and keep the unused portion, right?

Unfortunately the energy spent with a bow drill could be far more dangerous in a survival scenario. In my pack I have several lighters, both butane and zippo, along with matches, charcloth, petroleum jelly cotton balls, and firesteel. Not to mention an isobutane stove and heet plus an alcohol stove. Even with all of that, I will be ordering flares soon due to this video. Ease in starting a fire is essential, it's also critical should you have to boil water. A bow drill is too risky.

I had to start large logs on fire that were just cut down so still very wet. Just leaned a road flare against the bottom one and the fire was going strong by the time it went out. No need to move it around and try to start several areas. And I mean large 1.5 foot diameter logs just split in half, which are truly not easy to start on fire normally.

From what I've heard, marine signals and aerial flares don't burn as long because they are designed to be launched out of a flare pistol or shotgun and don't stay airborne more than a few seconds. They can be used to start fires, as has been demonstrated in several KZitem videos, but it is much harder to do than with a standard police or road safety signal flare. Good ones burn 8-12 minutes, and really good ones burn 20 minutes or longer but are more expensive and take more space in your pack. Also the flare will burn faster if you keep it in the fire, because the fuel in the tube heats up faster.

Good point on the fire piston, seems it would take up space on the tang if it were place in a partially skeletonized handle. And as for the box drill, its true that there are many custom and production knives available with that feature,I thought it might be interesting to see how gavkoo would incorporate those things if he ever tried. Have you ever come across any knives with ferro rods that screw into the handle?

Note to self: when in need of an immediate signal fire, stick road flare into pile of wet wood. Now, what to do if out in the middle of a big lake after you've fallen through the ice and there isn't any wood of any kind???
