There originally was a different sequel planned. It was published as SPLINTER OF THE MIND'S EYE....the first novel in the expanded lore that was cannon until Disney

i thought he had "splinter of the mind's eye" written without Han in case harrison ford said no to a sequel and he 'decannoned' it when he agreed to empire. i might be wrong

it's been interesting to see the way in which parents talk to kids evolve over the decades. when i was young, parents talked to their kids like babies. these days, my friends with kids talk to them with a full vocabulary, a sense of humor and sarcasm, etc. i also work in a children's hospital and it's the same thing. nurses joke around and give young patients a hard time.

The scenes where everyone Luke trusted in life lied to him about his father are pretty good. When Vader reveals himself you do go back and say WTF. It's too bad the third movie was just a money grab.

Hi again, lovely video. I'm going to respectfully differ about Empire being better than what is now called "A New Hope," simply on the basis of originality. The first film invented and introduced so many new concepts and the rules that govern them: lightsabers, the Force, Jedi knights, hyperspace, and dogfights in space. The second film capitalized upon all these new ideas and further developed them, but by then all of us, including Mr. Lucas, had some understanding of the world he'd created. By no means am I saying Empire isn't a fine film, arguably as good as the first. And oh how I wish the stories had continued to mature with its audience!

i hear ya. 'a new hope' was groundbreaking and if it wasn't amazing we never would have had a franchise that lasted all these years. it did everything right and built an incredible universe. I just think it's amazing they built on what they had created rather than just trying to 'recapture the magic' like most movie makers would have done.

In the end, debating New Hope/Empire, Godfather/II, Alien/Aliens isn't productive. It is miraculous and praiseworthy when a sequel manages to do well, and even elevate its precursor. The third film always disappoints, though.

What you're doing with your Science Fantasy novel - using the Star Wars/Game of Thrones in Space approach but doing a *_completely_* original story with a unique premise that has specific themes in mind - is what Zach Snyder *should* have done with _Rebel Moon!_ Fortunately we have things like _the Sun Eater_ and _Dune_ but your upcoming novel series sounds really cool as well!

thank you! I compare it to star wars and GOT but it is its own thing and i'm really excited to share it with the world. and of course I love Dune, so the influence is going to be obvious

you mentioned sequels "doing it again"... well as a kid i was enthralled by Ghostbusters 2 (saw it in the theatre) and pretty much liked it a lot until i listened to the Red Letter Media commentary on it. they essentially pointed out how the movie more or less follows the exact beats as the first. RLM sure can find a way to make people dislike things they used to like!

a lot of stuff we loved as a kid doesn't hold up to scrutiny. and sometimes that's ok. some things could entertain 12 year-old us but aren't meant to be analyzed for years. star wars and LOTR have tons of stuff to think about many years later

The Black Hole is NOT a rip-off of Star Wars. It was in planning before anything of Star Wars was every put to paper. It owes more to 2001: A Space Odyssey but as the 70s progressed it was Star wars that made it clear that sci-fi was cool again.

I dont even think Empire is nessecarily better. I know its not worse... But I honestly cant say its better. The original Star Wars is, by far, the most underrated of the OT. It _is_ simpler and not as dark which I think is a big reason for this but that doesnt make it a worse movie. The original movie is an almost perfectly balanced introduction to a series like Star Wars. Sure, George didnt know that when he made it bur it doesnt really matter. And without it, Empire wouldnt even ve as good as it is. The quality of empire, at least partly, hinges on the quality of Star Wars. Im saying all this as a person who has Return of the Jedi as his favorite SW movie, the one that I personally believe is the worst (or, more correctly, least awesome) in the series. I know it is, i just _like it_ better. So, this is not some biased excuse making for "my favorite movie". I really cant put Empire over Star Wars. I also cant put Star Wars over Empire. Its like trying to pick between Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. They literally made eachother. One would not have been half as great without the other and vice versa. Theyre two sides of one

"better" was subjective on my part. both are great. the real achievement is following up a perfect movie without simply trying to 'do it again.' I love that they broke away from the formula with Empire and added layers and layers of psychology. There was a quote from Siskel and Ebert that I couldn't find for this video but i remember from years ago where they talk about how important the second film in a series is. If it works you have a series, if it doesn't you have one good movie and a disapointment.
