Honestly without Matriarch, I think my passion and excitement for perfume would have faded a lot this year... There is just nothing that excites me, I am personally thankful for them just for that.. they've given me something to be excited about again, and keeping the fire burning.. Also actually forgot to mention, I bought LOADS of Incense Cones from them too, they're all amazing, I highly recommend them.. very affordable too. One more thing I purchased from House of Matriarch were the new AromaWands, which are brand new vape pens that smoke pure essential oils, they have real Malaysian Oud, Mysore Sandalwood, Rose Petal.. quite a few to pick from. I bought two of them to gift my mother for Christmas!! She vapes all day. So I know she'll love them. I bought her the Rose and the Lavender to try! It's actually tasting the raw natural perfume in vape form, I am surprised no one else has done it before. Christi seems to do things first before anyone else, I think she's pretty genius.. I don't think anyone really knows about them yet. I'd imagine quite a few people would love to smoke and taste real Oud and Mysore Sandalwood.. Oh and I also bought a 100ml bottle of Kazimi a couple of days ago, because they had a happy hour sale and it was 50% off!! so I got it for a crazy price!! I have no room left on my bookcase though, so I'll have to keep it up on top!! - So there you go, that's everything I laid down $$ for this year! I totally forgot to mention I did buy Mancera Lemon Line this year, but it was a disappointment and I won't buy it again... - The only other thing I was tempted to buy this year was somethings from Atelier Cologne! Maybe next year I'll buy those.. we'll see, I need to test the samples. They tend to burn off super quick..

Oh, Peter, I could just hug the stuffing out of you right now! I wish I could make the last four minutes or so (27:59) of this video required viewing for everyone I love. It sounds as if you and I are on a similar journey right now with respect to fear and regret. I had a bit of a moment almost two years ago when I realized just how much I'd let fear dictate the direction of my life, and how inauthentic and invisible it had left me feeling. I made a decision to reorient my stance toward fear, to retrain my self-preservation instinct to run toward fear rather than away from it. I realized that if the main reason I didn't want to do something was fear, it was a pretty strong indication that I should do that thing. I have to tell you, that one decision--a decision that seemed so small and basic in the moment--has made a bigger difference in my life than anything ever has. It has been everything. It IS everything. Thank you for being your authentic self. I'm sure it's the reason most of us watch your videos. I hope you are able to find a rekindling of your passion in the coming year--even if you have to create the requisite fragrances yourself!

Hey man 👋 I’ve been in this comment box now for at least 10 mins, typing stuff, deleting, typing, deleting, you get the jist 😂. So I’m gunna try and simplify my thoughts on this video and the closing message. This is the best KZitem video I’ve seen in a long while and I spend a good few hours a day on the site. I can’t remember the last time a video stopped me in my tracks and made me question things as much as this. I dunno man, I’m just gunna have to post this cause I’m trying to think of something poetic to say to sum up how I feel and nothing does it justice. In short, love your channel, you was an inspiration for me to delve into creating videos and Fragrance. And thank you so much for your honesty and heartfelt end of year message. Big up Peter. For starters, you look dashingly handsome in a suit Peter. What a great, respectable choice of attire for wrapping up the year. I especially like the hankerchief. :) Much more importantly, I believe you are *not* here on KZitem as just a perfume reviewer, musician, explorer, dog lover, and deep sea diver. You are here to show us an example of someone who has found his passion in life. You've done the inside work, figured out what you would prefer to do with your life, educated yourself on that craft, and you are getting closer every day to making your dream a reality. Even if someone is not a perfume lover or has an untrained nose that cannot distinguish natural from synthetic scents (walking around in Lancome La Vie Est Belle, Dior Hypnotic Poison and M. Micallef Ylang in Gold feeling like they are wearing something special...I'm talking about myself by the way), your process is such a beautiful thing to observe! Watching someone live authentically gives others permission (and perhaps even the inclination) to do the same. Sometimes the life pursuit of one's passion can be fraught with disappointment. Sometimes its easier to see what is missing when you know what you prefer. I think you see what is missing in the industry because you are meant to fill that gap. Therefore, rejoice that this perfect gap exists!!! It's like finding a perfect job opening for your skill sets and talents. Finally, I am a bit of a softie, but I must say I was moved to tears by your final comments Peter. The sincerity within your words was palpable. Perhaps it was just something I needed to hear at this time in my life. Thank you for putting it out there, thank you for being your amazingly authentic self and thank you for such a well edited video - which highlighted what I believe was a pretty good year for a very clear man. Have a wonderful holiday season and may 2018 bring you boundless joy and great adventures!

AWESOME! Your analogy of knowing a magic trick and knowing a fragrance's components was truly fascinating and sad at the same time. I'm sure its the same for Movie Makers knowing all of the movie tricks that it is hard for them to appreciate a movie in the same way us the average viewer. I'm sure whenever you do get your house going it will be magical for at least everyone else. thank you for sharing your thoughts.

As a full-time professional musician (with years of formal training), I hear music as complex layers and as a frag head for over 40 years, I often approach a fragrance from similar aspects to music. I assume that you, Peter, as an accomplished musician, can relate. Thanks for the great reviews. Your honesty and insights are very refreshing. BTW - I have purchased over a 1/2 dozen HoM gems...so far.

Peter, your video took my breath away. I, as I’m sure many people, struggle with that fear and feeling incompetent. Our brain patterns have ruined many a lives. As you speak of Christi being your peer and inspiration, remember you are that to so many out here!! You will certainly achieve your goals, your involvement and the work you engage in.....is testament of that process. But then, nothing you love or have a passion for is “work” is it?? Every artist, and I mean a REAL artist, struggles and learns his craft, whether painting, sculpture, food, and of course perfumery. Some people have that little something that separates them from the crowd, Van Gogh, Brancusi, Turin in perfumery. Genius is work, vision and the belief that what you do is the best work you can do at that moment.. You have that something extra. Stay strong and focused. You have recognized a gap in the industry that Christi has......I’m looking forward to buying your creations in the future. I think I might have given myself a pep talk also........I need to get to my oils myself!! Merry Christmas and have a great New Year!! Duane PS have you ever been able to smell some of the great perfumes from the 1900 to 1930s? My God, what can you achieve if you have the best products in the world. There is no comparison to any commercial product today. I learn a lot from the past, bad and good. Try it sometimes. 😁

I know I've said it a few times before, but I'll say it again that I feel that fragrance and film have a lot in common. When I started studying film, my tastes changed so much, partly because I understood so much better how they are made. I started focusing on very complex, arty and foreign films, the stuff you'd see at film festivals. Blockbusters just all looked the same to me, and it very much felt (and still feels often) that most of what is out there is rubbish. THIS SAID, somewhere down the line, probably when I started studying under a famous film critic (then in her 80s), I started enjoying movies again. Not "films", but movies. Flicks you can watch while stuffing your face with popcorn. I think what happened was I kind of lightened up and maybe started seeing what most people see: the slick cars, the beautiful people, the exotic locations and the HOPE that completely unrealistic story lines inspired. It actually takes a lot of craft to make a big Hollywood picture, and I think I refused to recognize that while I was searching for deeper meanings in stories and images. While I don't think you're being overly picky--you simply have good taste--maybe you've painted yourself into a bit of corner seeking out the best of the best and the most unique of the unique. And while I'd never say you should change anything or do something different, I do want to say, "Hang in there". For me, I know even better now how movies are made, and still believe that most of what's out there is utter crap, but at the same time, it's sometimes great just to enjoy a cheap thrill, or a well-worn classic, and appreciate what it's doing for other people. Sometimes we can find joy in the unremarkable when we adjust our approach. (Or not.) Keep at it! PS - Damn, you look dapper in that three-piece! ;)

Thank you Peter, for making this. I just want to say you are an inspiration to a lot of people too, like me. I was lurking for a while, but it kinda breaks my heart a bit to hear you opening with such a jaded note, so I thought I should say something - you are very talented, but your sincerity and honesty is what attracts people. We don't have a lot of that anymore, so please, keep being you. I always got a chuckle whenever you go all gushing about HoM. Maybe because they are right here in my own backyard, I kinda see HoM with a more local-artisanal view. I absolutely love this corner of the world I call home, and maybe you can hop on over to Seattle next time you visit your friend again up in Vancouver. Just a mere 2.5 hours drive across the border, and I think you will get a lot of ah-hah moments that speak of the spirits and elements that go into the HoM creation. To me, HoM sounds very Pacific Northwest, and it's absolutely beautiful. However, I am older, more set in my Guerlain way, but you did just convinced me to treat myself to HoM Kazimi, so we will see. Anyhow, back to my lurking. Happy Holidays!

I can agree with you completely on the magic going when you begin to understand the technicalities of a given subject. I am a musician and have been since I was 13, I spent many years buried in music theory and composition. I have a good grasp of the theoretical basis for music which has helped me massively in composition, the trade off of course is that when I hear beautiful pieces of music I can't help but take it apart from a technical perspective, it certainly takes something away from the experience.

Peter, you look dashing!! I believe that everyone appreciates your honesty and integrity. The world has turned into something I cannot recognize. Mediocracy and idiocracy are present in major aspects of people's life. It also applies to niche perfumes which I would consider a luxury. The high demand for great fragrances makes some companies compromise on the quality. The best example would be Chanel and their "Les Exclusifs" collection. I have three beloved fragrances from that range - Coromandel, Sycomore and Cuir de Russie (EDT) from the early 2000's which will always remind me of the times when I lived in Europe ( along with the tabbacco scents :D ). The entire range costs more now and it has been reformulated to the EDP version which is a complete joke. However, most of the customers are still paying for them despite the low quality at a premium cost. My reflections of this year are pretty down as well as I look around me and see that the idols, talents and great minds are replaced for shallow people who create an illusion of the perfect - vain world where consumption should be the ultimate goal of masses.

I have been in this KZitem “fragrance community” since ‘09. Seen so many come and go. Bullshit after bullshit in all aspects that come with a love for an art form. The growth in popularity and the inevitable downfall in quality because of it. I sigh in relief that I found your channel about 2yrs(I think) ago now. With so many to choose from after all these years, you are 1 of the 3 I stay loyal and subbed to. Everything in this video is the example as to why I choose to devote some time out of my day to you my friend. Your honor in what you stand for, your past experiences in life that make you who you are, down to such a realistically unimportant thing in life(fragrances) is a breath of fresh air. As a man that has suffered with depression for the better half of my 20’s, to almost calling it quits about 2yrs ago now, I fully understand when you start getting deep. The light at the end of the tunnel is beautiful and when you get there maaaaaaaaan you pinch yourself. I’m glad your in a better place, as to I am. 1 love my brother and always stay you!

First of all thanks for a well put together video and dressing up. To me you always look good even in your dive suit. About your journey this year, I thought it was pretty adventurous and fun even though it is my first year of subscribing you. Your passion, not only for fragrances but for life is quite evident in most of your videos. None of us are perfect. But I think you have what it takes to be a perfumer who is more passionate about the scents than the money. I thought that’s how most perfumers were at least in the niche market. But sadly it seems like sooner or later money takes over. I know for sure Peter that one day when you become a well known perfumer, you will not be one of them. Your sincerity and integrity speaks for itself. I’m subscribed to a bunch of fragrance reviewers but nobody gets this many long comments on their video in less than 24 hours. I’m not the one for long comments either but you somehow force people to be a bit more authentic like yourself. Looking forward to more from you in 2018. Happy Holidays to you and your loved ones. Stay blessed.

Great video!!. For about the last six months I have been gravitating towards more independent perfumers. I now have 5 scents from HOM. I also do enjoy Tauer, and have a few bottles from him. DSH and Vartan perfumes are also nice. I am currently exploring PK Perfumes which I am also enjoying. Keep up the good work, honestly and integrity. Have a great new year!

There are not few nice people in the fragrance industry. Yes, some ones have ridiculous prices but there are really quite a few very talented perfumers and they don't charge high prices. I also appreciate self taught perfumers. They are my favourites. Fort&Manle is stunning. One of my fav discoveries. I totally get why your passion and magic is gone a bit because of getting familiar with ingredients. I am really looking forward to try your fragrances. I have a feeling I will absolutely love them! PS. HOM is magical, was happy to discover it! Unfortunately, can't afford them but Christi is a true talent!!! And sorry Peter, but not all perfumers a greedy but of course you have your own opinion and fragrances are very personal so I totally respect your thoughts! You will create amazing fragrances, Peter, and I wish you a lot of luck with your house! Please hurry up, I am very excited;) And your videos creating fragrances really inspired me creating fragrances. I hate mainstream market. I can't wait to start blending myself and buy wonderful oils. I just need some money, haha... Cheers! Have awesome holidays:)

Hi Peter, I actually started practising perfuming just a couple months back after watching your tutorials; I took the leap the next day with a huge order of natural oils and I have not been so happy with the decision. Don't be too bothered about comments that don't really gel with your own beliefs. I'd like you to know that those reviews really levelled up my awareness on quality and price reasonableness. I can appreciate what you meant about most commercial fragrances being overly prescriptive, duplicated, and having no artistic value. I went out to the malls to sniff out some of the new brands that popped out of nowhere, and I wanna reassure you that it is not entirely wrong to say there are crooks out there trying to prey on consumers' ignorance. Even as a really green hobbyist still learning to identify the natural oils in my collection, I couldn't help wanting to compare the difference between quality naturals vs synthetics. I think it is perfectly normal and professional for perfumers to expect quality in every bottle, so I won't say that's being jaded in any sense. Keep going, and have a good year ahead~ Warmest Regards, Newbie from Singapore

i enjoyed this so much. i’ve gotten so obsessed with experimenting with oils. I’m from washington state in the US and will try to hunt down house of matriarch. i’ve started making some of my own oils with our local vegetation. I believe this summer i will start gathering my peony and irises petals.

Im a relatively new member of your channel Peter, and just came across and finished watching this video. Im also relatively new with this hobby, which I got into just over a year ago. Its because of you that i heard about House of Matriarch, and am awaiting some of their samples in the mail with anticipation. I mainly am writing this to say thank you for being you; you are very genuine and especially that ending to the video shows your big heart by imparting us with your advice. I enjoy your videos, keep doing what you do as long as you still love doing it. And if you do some day start your own house and release fragrances, ill definitely be intrigued and will want to try them. If thats your wish, i hope you fulfill it dude!

I think it's probably normal for our enthusiasm to wain somewhat over the years. If you concider how personal attaching to scent is and also the fact that we will only really love a few scents in our time.....I really enjoy your take on things though and have found your reviews to be very informative. Have a great Christmas Peter....

I totally forgot about that!!!! yes I did! it lasts about an hour on my skin and is gone.. at least when I was in Dubai.. The tie pin isn't necessary no, but it looks nice regardless of it's function :) and I rarely if ever get to wear it...

I agree. No secret that I have been discouraged for some time now with current perfumed offerings, so I go back in time. I did found one I just love last week, Ummagumma EDP by Bruno Fazzolari. I ordered it and one of his sampler packs. It's possible you might like it. Notes : Saffron, carnation, chocolate, tobacco, leather, labdanum, sandalwood, cedar, frankincense, tonka bean, vanilla. It's quite fine. P.S. You do look nice.

I'm getting what you're saying about chance taking "But" being fifty one years old I regret quite a lot of the chances I got and took with probably an equal amount of regret from chances I didn't take. I do feel a logical approach is a smart approach most of the time. Chance can be careless and very unforgiving ruining one's life very early on in years, yes it's a more exciting way to live for a lot of people to say the least though chance and risk are of the same vein, take stupid chances or risks "umm" seeing an opportunity and waying up the... "what's the chances or risks involved then making a smart decision I believe is the right approach to life. Being well balanced and of sound mind with a learning of contentment, forgivingness, appreciation and learning if not already learnt to enjoy one's own company with oneself, being your own best friend and not your own worst enemy and mature into a wiser understanding and less selfish human being. With age we usually learn something though not all learn good. As we grow older we gain more knowledge but many aren't any wiser. Learn from the past, live with the present and plan lightly for a future we have little control of. Chance is like a guess, an educated guess is usually the better, take chances in life but don't be too precarious. Sorry for being so long winded Peter but you must have struck a chord, 'Pun intended' lol. Enjoyed the video!

Happy holidays brother. You're one of the best mainly because you're honest, not easily impressed and not influenced by companies giving you free shit. Especially all those thieving clone houses. Anyways keep doing what you're doing because it provides tremendous value to a lot of people not just in your opinions on fragrances but also your insight on life. Just lose the tie bar when you're wearing a vest. It's redundant, like wearing a belt and braces at the same time. :P

I don't get why so many reviewers are peddling DUA... I mean they're obviously gifted the bottles to review, but it doesn't look great to me personally :/ but each to their own I guess. I agree with your comment about Clive Christian, the scent itself is very nice. The range is now discounted at a boutique in Bicester Village, and it’s the current line which you can pay full price for in stores like Fortnum & Mason. I guess this shows that the price tag is not justified.

Wonderful video ! I agree with you as far as these new releases . I had the opportunity to smell many of the Ex Nihilo , Parfums de Marly , new Bonds , Kilians , & Creeds & nothing moved me . I was in Ulta recently & gave a few sniffs to some designer fragrances & they were even worse. I also took advantage of HoM Happy Hour & bought Kazimi . I've been wanting a full bottle since my 15 ml is almost gone . Got it at a very good time ---the price was great ! I must try the incense cones next time . Happy Holidays to you & yours !

As always, love the honesty Peter. I agree that mainstream designer and niche has been terrible this year to be nice, but I feel like there have been some gems in the indie niche scene. My favourites of 2017 have been Bogue Profumo's MEM, Papillon's Dryad and Bruno Fazzolari's Feu Secret. As for HoM, I'm glad that keeps you going because you make truly great fragrance content, but sorry you seem to cop a lot of flack for it. I haven't connected as much with Christie's work from what I've tried but it's all just personal taste. Papillon for me is a house that keeps my faith alive in niche perfume. I stumbled across this interview the perfumer did a while ago and it made me respect what she does more because she feels quite honest and genuine. I think you'll find it interesting... www.kafkaesqueblog.com/2015/02/04/papillons-liz-moores-part-i-learning-creating-and-the-perfume-process/
