Bit of a strange era; seeing players like Francis, Woodcock, Hateley, Anderson so prominent in the early qualifiers, but then dropped out of favour before or during the World Cup in Mexico, replaced by the likes of Beardsley, Lineker, Waddle etc. I have faint memories of Mexico '86, but seeing the set up of the team before this in the mid 1980s was very interesting. Barnes, Lineker, Hoddle, Waddle, Robson - all genuine world class talents. The defence wasn't bad either - Shilton, Stevens, Butcher, Wright, Samson. Add clever players like Beardsley, Hodge and Steven and you had the makings of a golden generation as good as any other. Problem in Mexico was that Barnes was on the bench too long, baffling. They played some good football in these qualifiers, Bryan Robson at his peak. Loved him in an England shirt and I'm a Liverpool fan. Wilkins shouldn't have started in Mexico, did us a favour getting sent off as it freed the team up.

In the 90s for example, when a highly technical side played one touch possession football compared to the long ball percentage stuff that was the norm - it was a novelty and a sight to behold.
