I met Johanne through Eryk. Johanne came to Taiwan 25 years ago after her mom showed her an ad in the local paper saying that a kindergarten in Kaohsiung needed an English teacher. Not long after she got here the 921 Earthquake struck, and she went to a town near the epicenter to sub for teachers that left the country. She quickly fell in love with Taiwan and got 6 people to move here, including her ex boyfriend and her brother. After teaching for several years, she got the chance to work for the Kaohsiung City Government improving the area's bilingual friendliness for the 2009 World Games. During that time she met her husband and had a daughter. They decided to stay in Taiwan and sent their kid to local public schools. In elementary school, her daughter excelled in Chinese, but in middle school, her teacher kept tell her that foreign kids couldn't learn Chinese. Unfortunately, this led her daughter to drop out of high school here and move to Canada. Now Johanne is getting her PhD in Human Resources and Organizational Behavior with a focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. She thinks that Taiwan is welcoming to tourists, but has a long way to go in the workplace and school. Therefore, Johanne hopes to use her research to improve the reception of foreigners in Taiwan and help the country achieve its 2030 bilingual initiative
