I met Wade at a previous job. Wade was born in South Africa and moved to Taiwan when he was 3 years old. Even though some of his classmates pointed out that he looked different, Wade enjoyed his time in Taiwanese elementary school. He feels that once people knew his dad was Taiwanese, they were able to accept him more easily. When he was 12, he moved back to South Africa, where he realized that school was actually really tough in Taiwan. Wade moved to the US for college in a very small white town in Ohio. After graduating, Wade decided to come back to Taiwan to settle down here. Wade's diverse background has given him an interesting perspective on race. In the US, he found discrimination varied state to state, while in South Africa it depended on age. However in Taiwan, he finds that most people still see foreigners as outsiders in order to protect their own culture.
