Pop your goggles on your hat. That is the sound of steampunk for sure. Would love to have seen a frequency response graph for that setup it would probably reflect the length and also the turns in the springs and all sorts of vibrational modes of the system.

This setup really merits another more scientific attempt. One day, when I have lots of space to store a big old thing like that, I'll build it and put it through its paces, documenting everything in true mad scientist fashion. The major adjustment would be to create a much more powerful preamp and magnet system. The more l learned about spring reverbs, the more I realized that what I'd actually made was more like a stretched-out plate reverb.

Can you please try it with an electric guitar with single coils?

@@pbartmess Awesome! Try some muted notes so I can hear if it's got the surf drip!

How are you getting the input sound to go through the springs?

I apologize, I wasn't quite clear about that stage. Inside the little "birdhouse" is a diy preamp and connected to that is a transducer. The transducer is basically a miniature version of the magnet that forms the core of an audio speaker. I got mine at Sparkfun. It vibrates that sheet of metal just like a magnet would vibrate the paper cone of a speaker. So when I placed it on the spring, it sent the signal from my synth through to the other end where the little piezo microphone picked it up and sent it through to my mixer and recorder.

They came from my garage door. I have since been able to locate new ones for sale at Ace Hardware.
