Endometriosis is a medical condition that affects the tissue lining the uterus (the endometrium). In endometriosis, this tissue grows outside of the uterus, typically on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or other organs in the pelvic area. In rare cases, endometrial tissue may also grow outside of the pelvic region.
The symptoms of endometriosis can vary widely, but they often include:
Painful periods (dysmenorrhea)
Pain during intercourse
Chronic pelvic pain
Painful bowel movements or urination
Infertility
The exact cause of endometriosis is not fully understood, but several theories have been proposed. One theory suggests that menstrual blood containing endometrial cells flows back through the fallopian tubes and into the pelvis, where the cells implant and grow. Another theory proposes that cells in the abdominal cavity can turn into endometrial cells and grow.
Endometriosis is typically diagnosed through laparoscopic surgery, which allows a doctor to visualize and biopsy the affected tissue. Treatment options for endometriosis can include medication to manage symptoms, surgery to remove the endometrial tissue, and in some cases, hormone therapy or assisted reproductive technologies to improve fertility.
