Little by little I've become more interested in the food I feed to my family. Mostly because of my concern about the politics of GMOs. This is very helpful. Thank you. You're helping a poor old woman make important decisions.

I’m glad to be part of your learning journey as you learn about this. I became a committed organic food consumer years ago as I became aware of the science behind modern agriculture.

*Dont recognize the 'bio-bus' @ 23:40 but the bio fuel for it is grown on some of what they call the 5 year pasture land (4 years cattle/sheep, 1 year corn) round somerset (the county to the south), that's the 'poor' agricultural soil found in that county, corn goes to first group for their bus fleet (the soil is usually from carboniferous hard limestone, Triassic sand/chalk etc. and full of clay).

Interesting. Limestones tend to yield the formation of more alkaline soils which many crops don't prefer without fertilizer or some other sort of chemical soil treatment. Here in Dallas...where I live...it's all cretaceous limestone which gives us alkaline groundwater conditions, but a very thick O-horizon on the soils here support lower-pH preferring plants than would normally not occur here, hence the beautiful prairies in central United States.

Aren't honey bees more susceptible to colony collapse due to them being an introduced species to north america by Europeans? The over 200 native north american species would take over pollination of species of plants as they did before the invasive species was introduced in my opinion the native species of North america are way less susceptible to colony collapse it seems. I mean they took care of it for millions of years before people interfered with nature.

colony collapse is definitely a complicated topic and you're right to point out another facet to the complexity. The varroa mite is blamed. The pesticides are blamed. The loss of habitat in general is blamed. Studies have shown now that higher atmospheric carbon levels are altering the nutritional characteristics of the pollen on which so many pollinators depend - reducing protein and important minerals. The modern containment devices we use for bees may be playing a role by inadequately mimicking their natural niche, failing to provide insulation and air-tightness. Studies have shown that restricting airflow in a hive and allowing carbon dioxide to rise to an elevated level during the winter, increases hardiness and resistance to varroa mite. Accumulation of carbon dioxide is an important part of the reproduction of a new queen bee as well. Modern boxes are often bottomless and made of thin wood with lots of air flow.

Videos 12 and 13 also discuss the issues regarding fertilizers. Monocultures absolutely decimate soil fertility.
