Don’t Look Up is a 2021 American satirical science fiction film. The cast includes five Oscar winners (Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep, and Mark Rylance) and two Oscar nominees (Timothée Chalamet and Jonah Hill). Don't Look Up premiered on Netflix on 24 December 2021 and became the network’s third most watched films ever.
However, despite its popularity and star-stuffed cast, the film received mixed reviews from film critics and climate journalists.
It’s no secret that a “planet killer” comet about to hit Earth in Don’t Look Up is an allegory for the climate crisis. Director Adam McKay was inspired to write his script after he first read the report by the Intergovernmental Planet on Climate Change (IPCC). The starring of Leonardo DiCaprio is also not accidental, since he famously spent years fighting against the climate change.
But just how good of a metaphor is this film? Some creators point out that while both the comet and the climate change have potential to destroy our planet, the former is a natural event which is outside our control, while the former is quite literally the result of human activity. Moreover, climate crisis is not just one thing threatening humanity: together with the CO2 emissions, there is also soil and water pollution, loss of biodiversity, climate refugees, hunger, weather instability and natural catastrophes. And climate science is not piriveged knowledge acccessible to those who can do maths - apart from the scientists, there are journalists, activists, non-profit workers and grassroots movements trying to protect the planet.
What the film is accurate in portraying is extreme politisation of opinions on the issue, as well as blatant desire to undermine science and discredit those who try to speak out about the issue - for example, Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) is an alias for Greta Thunberg, who, after her passionate speech at the UN, was famously called “ridiculous” and having “anger management issues”.
In addition, climate conspiracy, similar to the film's "Don't Look Up" conspiracy, was a way for the fossil fuel companies like Shell to finance the anti-climate change movements.
I also enjoyed that Don’t Look Up is very precise in terms of portraying the science and calculations behind space observation and the crew had an astronomer advise them on the details. This is just accurate film-making.
In the end, does this film preach to the woke and enrages the climate deniers? In a way, I think so. Should you watch it? If you like satire and want to get an existential crisis in the end of the film, you should.
