So a little education about epilepsy. There are three stages to a seizure (beginning or prodromal, middle or ictal, and the end or postictal). We can usually tell when Robert is prodromal because he gets hyper, has a high pulse rate and is often confused.
His ictal stage usually involves his head turning to the right and then back and forth, he tugs at his clothing or his fingers and has what I call “seizure mouth” (his lips purse together).
This video shows Robert in his postictal phase. He has just had two seizures back to back. He often has a maniacal laugh in this phase and will have some confusion. He’s not confused about where he is though - Robert is very literal so telling me he’s in his chair is definitely answering my question (although he usually says “at the house”).
Robert’s type of seizures are called focal impaired (previously known as complex partial). His eyes stay open but he is unaware of his surroundings. He doesn’t have convulsions but he sometimes does move around a lot so we move things out of his reach.
That’s just a little about Robert’s seizures - there are many different types of seizures. In fact, Robert’s seizures have changed through the years but we can talk about that in another video.
That’s the lesson about seizures today! Thanks for coming to my TedTalk. 🙃
