SAPPO is contributing to making agriculture more environmentally friendly, sustainable, and future-looking by working alongside farmers who produce pork across southern Africa.
SAPPO farmers James and Karen Jenkinson (Swineline) are switching on the sun by harnessing solar energy to run their farm that produces pork.
“My heart pumps mud,” says James Jenkinson who cannot imagine being anything but a farmer - even when the lights go out. Farmers who produce pork need a constant 24/7 supply of electricity to properly care for their animals to ensure they are well-housed, well-fed and well looked after. That’s when James’ ‘n-boer-maak-‘n-plan strategy kicked into action and he decided to switch on the sun. His solar plant has the potential to generate 280kW of power, while his farm uses around 120kW - the excess of which is banked at Eskom to alleviate pressure on the national energy grid.
Watch our short film about how farmers are tapping into sustainable energy sources to ensure that food gets to your table.
