This famous image is something I haven't seen until recently, when I had to start googling "equity" to make sure my teaching was focused on it. I had to recently demonstrate to the NZ teacher's council that my teaching met their standards, one of which was about equity.
Upon reflection of my own teaching practices and thinking through how this visual metaphor would actually work in the classroom, I began to realize it's a pretty useless metaphor. Any way I tried to think about it, I just couldn't figure out how I would follow this definition of equity and still be an ethical, fair and effective teacher.
But there's every possibility I am missing the point, so feel free to enlighten me in the comments. Or let me know if you also find that this is just another one of those well-intentioned ideas thought up in the ivory towers of academia that has little practical use for teachers in the trenches.
