Esther Perel (Antwerp, 1958) is an internationally renowned psychotherapist and writer. In her work, Perel explores the tension between love and lust and, with a confrontational but empathetic gaze, she looks at the apparently contradictory human need for security and freedom. Her books got to the New York Times bestseller list and her podcast Where Should We Begin? is listened to by millions of people worldwide.
Perel grows up in Antwerp as the daughter of Polish Holocaust survivors. She then studies literature, psychology and linguistics in Jerusalem and at Lesley College in Boston, where she meets her husband Jack Saul. Together they have two sons.
She specializes in system therapy with the world-renowned therapist Salvador Minuchin and has been working in New York for thirty-four years, where she has her own practice for family and relationship therapy.
Esther Perel is renowned in America after writing an article about sexuality in the aftermath of the Lewinsky affair. This leads to the publication of her first book Mating in Captivity (2006). The book becomes a global phenomenon and is published in twenty-six languages. Perel examines in this book the effect of romantic ideals on our relationships and the difficult relationship between our longing for domesticity on one hand and our desire for adventure on the other.
On the theme of her first book she will hold her first TED talk in 2013: The Secret to Desire in a Long Term Relationship. In 2015 she takes her second TED talk, about infidelity: Rethinking Infidelity ... a talk for anyone who has ever loved. Together these TED readings have now been viewed more than 20 million times.
Her book The State of Affairs: Rethinking Infidelity (2017) immediately hits the top of the American bestseller lists. In this book, Perel tries to answer the question of why we are cheating and what cheating can teach us about modern relationships. She argues for a more human story about infidelity: "Love is messy; unfaithful still more messy. But it is also a look like no other in the depths of the human heart. "
Since 2017 she has made the podcast Where Should We Begin ?, in which you as a listener can listen to the most intimate couples therapy sessions of couples. For her podcast, Perel did an online call: couples could join her in therapy, provided that everything was allowed to be recorded. She received thousands of reactions and chose the best stories. Her podcast attracts millions of listeners worldwide.
Currently she is working on the third season of the podcast, where she will not only do sessions with romantic partners, but will also explore other forms of relationships, such as friendships and family relations.
