I absolutely love her. Don't put no headstone on my grave. Aretha Franklin, gave Ester her reward, many people are unaware of this. Fantascia, is the closest to imitation that I've heard. She had a very unique voice..

Wow , I heard her story on Bill Gardner 's radio show "Rhapsody In Black " KPCC 88.3 FM. I'm glad you had pictures of "Handsome" Mel Walker. I 've wondered what he looked like. Some sources said he disappered and died of an drug addiction. It's a shame Litte Esther became a drug addict , and heavy drinker. I guess a lot of the musicians traveled a lot during that period of segregation. African Americans entertainers were not welcomed at a lot of hotels. They had to sleep in their cars or find a room on the " colored" part of town. The heroin and booze probably helped them to forget about being tired and hungry. They didn't make that much money, but were able to perform at odd hours. Sometimes after the shows ended , they engaged in jam sessions , and smoked marijuana to dull the pain.

It should be noted that Esther Phillips (aka Little Esther) is the youngest artist to have a Number 1 hit on Billboard's R&B Singles Chart! I think Stevie Wonder (aka Little Stevie Wonder) is still the youngest on Billboard's R&B Chart!

synonym did alot of good for addicts.the start of many great drug rehab programs.but then the government got involved and screwed up most of the self help programs run by ex addicts.so the problem is bigger now than ever.the problem will never go away.so sad.we are the feelgood country of the world.

Nice episode, but there's one thing that you forgot to mentioned, while this song "Release Me" became a #1 R&B hit, it would later became a classic for Engelbert Humperdinck which was 5 years later and it reached #4 on the Billboard charts in 1967, and #1 in the UK. If you have not heard Engelbert's version of this classic song, here it is. kzitem.info/news/bejne/yHhj2a6Xpn-jaag

Hey Musicradio 77. Thanks for nice comments. I didn't mention Englebert Humperdick's version of 'Release Me' because of the longevity of the video, so I had to edited it out, unfortunately. I know his version very well. I heard it many time on WABC during the time of its release in 1967. Thank you!
