Estimates of animal density are useful for species conservation and management, as well as for assessing animal health and epidemiology. But for nocturnal and cryptic animals such as armadillos, density is difficult to assess, particularly in dense forests. Roxane focused on their burrows, and proposes an estimate of the density of Dasypus in French Guiana, using burrow census and camera trapping.
A note from Dr. Roxane Schaub:
"Although I'm a medical doctor, I've always been interested in animal biology. With a speciality in public health and epidemiology, I naturally turned to the One Health theme for my PhD. While working on leprosy in French Guiana, I discovered the fascinating world of armadillos and this encouraged me to go further than just studying human-armadillo interaction in the context of this potentially zoonotic disease."
