Fun fact about Birdy: She may have been a partial inspiration for Samus Aran as Satoru Okada, Hiromi Kiyotake and Yoshioka Sakamoto have gone on record as being influenced by the original 1985 manga when conceptualizing the first Metroid game. I appreciate how you pointed out Birdy and Tsutomu's character dynamics, but I think it's more nuanced than the “smart one” and the “strong one”. Birdy is a clever and capable officer, but she's also hot-headed and impulsive, and she needs Tsutomu to serve as the voice of reason and help her navigate an unfamiliar human culture. It’s a classic 80s buddy cop story, and you really see the two learn to trust and rely on each other through the series. I also think the writers were wise to make them platonic friends rather than love interests. It’s more meaningful this way. In case you couldn’t tell, I’m a big fan of the OVA, and I’m editing my own 3000-word review of it that I hope to find the time to record soon.

Birdy is real kino. Favourite line is “a surface active agent!”. The newer TV series is pretty good too, especially since the side characters get fleshed out pretty well. The first season is better, though the second season has a kino OP. Only gripe is they killed off Tatum’s character, he’s too good a VA to get ignored like this. Then I read the manga. It’s ok, you’ve still got the same good character dynamic, but it just goes on and on without the plot progressing. Like 100 chapters in and they still haven’t gotten much closer to Christella Revi. Also Guyver exists, cover that.

Referring to Joshua Seth as "that guy from Digimon"... ouch. XD I mean, love me some Digimon, but his takes on Dio (Last Exile) and Hige (Wolf's Rain) are solid. Anyway, loving these OVA compilation videos!

Dream hunter Rem: This show has a plot but has like every anime genre and trope all in it somehow as well its really crazy in tone. The First Episode is sometimes is in Two parts because it is two storys together but ones after it are stand alone single storys Malice@Doll: Fully CG animation that has a PS1 Cutscene vibe to it about Female Robots in a space ship its very odd. Fight! Izer one; Space Elves,Mecha and Love craft stuff is three episodes long, has sequels but they leave out the horror stuff in those.

Recommendations - Shamanic Princess - a great artstyle and animation, story is good as well, but it's lightning fast and uses "show, don't tell" to such extreme, that you have to figure out absolutely everything about the world. Nekojiru-sou - cruel cat children go to underworld. Trippy. Dai Mahou Touge - an absurdist comedy about a magical princess who suplexes her foes (and breaks their joints). Patlabor - mecha police. Not great, but I love it. Trava - Redline prequel on crack. Detroit Metal City - a sweet and shy boy somehow plays in a death metal band and tries to balance his two personas.

Great series don't stop!👍 For future recommendations I'd throw out "Cipher" (1989) which is one of the best examples of the essence of the 1980's condensed into cinema. As well as being an interesting look how Japanese folks envisioned 1980's America. I can also recommend "They Were 11" (1986) which has a very interesting 70's sci-fi esthetic, and a fun "who-done-it" style plot.

I hope Discotek Media can rescue the licences of Alien 9, Silent Möbius, Moldiver, Birdy the Mighty (booth the 1996 OVAs and the 2008 Decode series), Ninja Gaiden, Plastic Little, Dangaioh, Great Dangaioh, etc. and give them Full HD remaster to release them on Blu Ray in the (near) future before they potentially become lost to the annals of time. They're really working overtime. The imminent shutdown of Tokyo Laboratory Ltd. also comes to mind. That company still has roughly 10000+ reels and master tapes stored in their vaults. If the original owners of those IPs, reels and master tapes don’t reclaim them soon, these reels and master tapes will be irretrievably destroyed.

That was a walk down memory lane. A few I can dredge from memory - Judge (Yami no Shihosha Judge) is a middling attempt at supernatural horror in which an everyday salaryman moonlights as the Judge of the Dead dealing out justice to evildoers. Most notably, accompanied by his parrot. Doomed Megalopolis - this one was actually pretty good, involving an evil wizard and a decade spanning plot to destroy Tokyo, quite notable because said evil wizard looked a bit like M.Bison. Otaku no Video - one of Gainax's early OVA's, part slice of life comedy, part calling out the fanbase, part autobiography and part love letter to 80s anime. Outlanders - mid 80s schlock that took a fairly decent space opera Manga and proceeded to ruin it by shovelling in everything that was hot in mid eighties OVA - ultraviolence, sex, Urusei Yatsura rip offs. The end result is either terrible or one of the greatest works of unintentional comedy genius ever animated.
