16Mb (2MB) was a LOT of RAM for the time! It feels like they didn't really take advantage of it too well as I think it would have helped for the character animation in action & fighting games, but they sadly didn't really use it for that. How awesome would a Street Fighter 2 port have been that uses the Arcade card?? Could have had the best home port for the time!
@sloppynyuszi
Жыл бұрын
Not really. RAM is just one factor. And looking how non RAM helped fighting street looked like, the developers probably did as much as they could with it, especially the SNK ports. I don’t see how street fighter would have looked much better with CD. It’s already very good and comparable to SNES as is. The RAM didn’t add much parallax it seems. You would have had better sound and some nicer cinematics and that arcade intro. Honestly, the 20mb Hue card did 95% of what a CD version would have done. And having a PC Engine GT in 1995, this was the only way to play street Fighter in my room as my parents wouldn’t buy me a TV😂
@skins4thewin
Жыл бұрын
@sloppynyuszi Could have had more animation though. It's what they used the extra RAM for in many Saturn fighting game ports, w the RAM expansion carts. Just saying that they could have used it for more important things than audio and such. Am sure you're right about the SNK ports, those probably did use the RAM for fighter animations like most games should, but most of the games that used the extra RAM expansion cards didn't do that.
@bigolebadassbob
Жыл бұрын
@@skins4thewin In addition to the intro cutscene and more animation frames, they could've also had larger character sprites and full screen backgrounds for Street Fighter games had they been released for the Arcade Card. I'm glad Fatal Fury Special took full advantage of the add-on!

If there were a SF2 port for the Arcade Card, I'd rather have Super SF2 and/or Super Turbo instead of a Champion Edition re-do. One original game I like is the shmup Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire. The pre-renders (3D CG and a little scaling) in this one are nice with smooth animation, and you can see the AC being put to work. Shame that NEC didn't allow arcade ports or sequels to franchises like GFDS , Gate of Thunder, etc. on PC-FX.
@skins4thewin
2 ай бұрын
@JudgmentStorm Agreed! The PC Engine really took advantage of that extra RAM that the CD drive added! You could really see the potential of the system being used with those CD games compared to the Hu-Card titles. It just goes to show how RAM starved most older systems were. Adding extra RAM to them could have really allowed them to push them to their full potential. I REALLY wish we had seen RAM expansions for more systems, such as the SNES or Genesis! Imagine what the Genesis could do with an extra 4MB of RAM! The Genesis CPU was pretty beefy as it was, bet we could have seen some truly amazing titles! If I'm not mistaken, didn't the Sega CD have additional RAM? I can't remember for sure.

That Gulliver Boy RPG was ported to the Saturn without any major change, except the battles feature borders around the screen due to the obvious differneces in resolution, similar to the Mega Man X3 port to the same console, but the Mega Man features those borders only at the sides. It should, by default, include higher quality FMV scenes, but it looks like they just ported the very downsampled PC-Engine files over. It feels like one of those Sega Ages Mega Drive games without any change. It at least, have the oblivious benefit of faster loadings, but that's a given. Maybe higher quality audio, though only with a real hardware comparison would prove this to be true.

I've been a fan of this channel since year one, but I gotta say I'm getting a little bit tired of the episodes where you just dismiss and mock a bunch of games that you either can't understand or just don't like the genre (like mahjong). I would like to see you play more games that you actually enjoy rather than forcing yourself to play "every game that uses the CD-I digital video cartridge" (for example). People are generally nice to creators in youtube comments I find, so there might be others thinking the same thing who are just too nice to say it. (I feel like I can't be the only one thinking this!) There were a few games in this episode that I actually quite like which I feel you wrote off a little quickly (probably because you had 34 other games you needed to cover). And also, mahjong can be a fun game if you learn it. (Though, I will admit we probably don't need so many of them, and they probably don't all need to feature nudity... and they were always a bit of a cash grab for Japanese game publishers.) Anyway, thanks for the funny ending skit and I look forward to your next video.

I never expected a full episode of Console Kombat at the end of a Game Sack video. That was fun to see. And it's cool how far Console Wars has come having been watching it since the early days. This was a fun video. I agree that Mad Stalker is a bit clumsy, and it didn't make the best first impression on me, but there was just something about it that grabbed me after seeing it in your X68000 video. After playing it a few times, I ended up really loving it. The music is a big part of that, but it plays pretty well, though I'm really into beat-em-up games and mechs which helps. I agree it probably could have been done on the Super CD with some loading as the arcade card seems to just let them load the entire game aside from the CD audio in one shot. And that does work out since the Genesis version is 16 megabits so it would fit into the arcade RAM with a bit of room to spare. I also agree that some line-scrolling parallax would have been possible if they planned the game around the system, but it's largely a port of the FM Towns version which also had the one background. Still, I don't mind the flat backgrounds in those. As for responsiveness, I thought it was pretty close to the Genesis version, and the PCE version doesn't have the slowdown in that one. I wish the screen didn't flash on the PCE version though, as that does get annoying to me. Interestingly, that is carried over from the X68000 version while the FM Towns doesn't have that. I did play the X68000 version and that felt the least responsive, but I always figured that was an emulator issue.

I had a chance to get a lot of this stuff back when turbo zone direct was still in business. But I had no idea this stuff would end up collectable. So I only bought games I would play. There aren't any US arcade card games that I know of. I tried and failed to learn to read Japanese. So I didn't buy many imports. Just stuff I knew you didn't need to read a lot of text to play. Sadly I don't have any of my turbo duo stuff anymore. After watching this I'm glad I didn't buy any of the arcade card games. At the time I thought you required the arcade card to play them. That thing was expensive. I can't remember how much tzd sold them for. But I remember it was more than the import games which could cost as much as 79.99$. but most were 59.99$. I do remember the arcade card was over 100$. Finding out now that you don't even need it to play them is kind of funny. I knew the other cards were basically a ram boost too, but with the OS for the CD drive. I had guessed the arcade card was the same, but I thought it had something else that made it required to play the games, kind of like all the other system add ons a lot of companies made back then had. I would have been mad back then if I paid probably close to 160$ for the arcade card and found out I didn't need it. I was already mad about two other converter things I bought and didn't have any japanese chip games for.

Must have been a big disappointment for consumers in Japan who invested early just to get a smattering of games that actually made good use of the extra capability. With only a couple of exceptions Castlevania Rondo of Blood greatly exceeds these games in the visual and audio categories, and that required no arcade card. Kind of a parallel with the 32x, though even the 32x had a higher ratio of games that were above and beyond what the step down hardware could accomplish.

Very interesting. The PCE was full of little accoutrements and extras it looks like, and sometimes it could really improve things with these cards. Better than the silly Wii control options that would come up decades later haha. I wonder if Sega took a page from this for the Saturn RAM carts. As for Mahjong... I'm not sure if it's a running joke or not, and of course you are free to like what you like, but it can be an interesting, strategical game if you get into it, in my opinion.

There are so many games on the PCE-CD that could really use a Translation. Almost as much as the Sega Saturn. If not more across CD, Super CD & Arcade card functionality. Its really sad how many interesting looking games never had a chance here. Also 24:32🎶🤘

Unless I missed something, this would make PC-Engine CD the first console with upgradable ram. (Not counting FDS or the many FC/NES games with onboard ram).
