@@rebeccasam3434 I have SFA on GBC and it's simple. They did away with the big sprites and used smaller 8x16 pixel ones, this means both characters could be hardware sprites, GB SF2 used hardware sprites for player 1 and software sprites on the CPU using background tiles for player 2. With the CPU unburdened from having to redraw about a third of the screen every frame, it can draw more frames and give a smoother experience using similar hardware. It's not as good as people say it is, BTW, but considering it's on GBC they did really well making it run like it did.

@@fattomandeibu thanks for the explanation! That’s really interesting. I guess that explains both how the characters are so big on the original gameboy game (throw all your sprites into creating a single character), and why it’s so choppy. It’s kind of impressive, but I think it was the wrong direction to go. That is such an interesting solution, even if it doesn’t seem to totally work! So the game boy color supports 8 x 16 pixels sprites? My understanding is NES only supports 8 x 8? Wasn’t until the TurboGrafx/Genesis/super Nintendo that you started getting more sprite sizes? I didn’t notice that while to me the games didn’t look all that much better, the NEOGEO pocket color fighting games FELT right to play There’s so much about so many systems I wish I understood better, I love games, I love tech, so the intersection is super fun to me
@fattomandeibu
Жыл бұрын
@@rebeccasam3434 I can't remember how big GB sprites are, but I believe it is pretty much the same spec as NES on sprite size and number. It wasn't really that rare to use software sprites, as a lot of computer systems used for gaming systems(computers like the ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST and IBM PC) wouldn't have hardware sprites at all and every game would have to use something similar. Keep in mind with the Neo Geo Pocket is that it is from 10 years after the Game Boy. It can handle bigger sprites and a higher number of them without breaking much of a sweat.
@rebeccasam3434

@@fattomandeibu I guess I do know even on the nes that they’d use backgrounds as moving characters basically…Megaman 1 did that even. Snes games used backgrounds so they could have giant characters that scaled. In both cases it would often be against a black background, which looked fine! But it wouldn’t have occurred to me about street fighter two on the game boy! I recently found out that punch out does some interesting stuff with that. I’m trying to remember for sure… I think little Mac and Mario are actually background tiles, and the only sprites are the big bosses, like they’re using all of the sprites to compose them. Unless I have that screwed up… And it’s really interesting like movement that little Mac does is actually scrolling, some of it, ditto for Mario, so not all of it is the CPU having to do new tiles, some of it it’s just a GPU scrolling! I don’t know, it’s just really interesting stuff But I had thought that the NES was only 8 x 8 sprites and you didn’t get anything larger until the TurboGrafx 16, genesis, and super Nintendo, but I could totally be wrong about that… Unless that is a new capability of the game boy color, since it is a lot more capable in different ways! I wish there was a resource that would list all of this and exactly have a hardware worked, like I found different sites but it’s often incomplete or doesn’t list stuff for every system .

Thunder Blade: Does this game have a good port? Ninja Gaiden: a 16bit era game that has scrolling rutines worse than a zx spectrum game. The NewZealand Story: It's missing 4½ levels.. how can you be short 4½ levels in a 20 level game?!?!?!?!?!? The attacks that you didn't know how to pull for that version, as well as the Amiga one, probably because the game used a system for attacks similar to what was usual in games before Street Fighter, as in the "keep the button pushed, then move the controller to one of the 8 directions, then release button" that you would find in games such as Yie Ar Kung Fu, Panza Kick Boxing or Budokan. I told St1ka this the other day, but I find it incredible that that Sanritsu Denki, who were responsible for both NES and SMS ports of Alien Syndrome did a much better job with the NES version than for the console produced by the company that made the original! (Were SEGA too busy to handle the port themselves?) It's even funnier when you consider all the other NES SEGA games, Fantasy Zone i & II, After Burner II, Space Harrier, and Altered Beast were not as good as on SMS. As for Street Fighter II'', (yes, the ' is part of the title in this version, and it's pronounced "Dash" for some reason), is at least _technically_ impressive due to how Tec Toy were able to have two relatively large sprites on screen without flicker. In fact, Capcom were actually impressed by their efforts and was how they got the license! Simply put, player 2 is not a sprite, but actually being rendered directly on the background layer. That's probably why the backgrounds are so bland looking, because the trick wouldn't have worked otherwise. It also explains why it plays so choppy, because everything must be constrained to 8x8 pixel tiles. (If I'm not mistaken, the SMS and GG ports of Mortal Kombat did this too!)
@Prizrak-hv6qk

Great video as always, Joe! But Tec Toy didn't have low standards! It was maybe overly ambitious, had little money and not enough knowhow to do this port (and certainly duke nukem 3d). It also had no support at all from Sega, which treated it like any other 3rd party, even though Tec Toy sold millions of Mega Drive and Master System consoles. Tec Toy translated a few games for both the Mega Drive and Master System, like Phantasy Star (which, by the way, with its 3d labyrinths inspired the tecnology its programmers used to recreate Duke Nukem 3d on the Mega Drive), Phantasy Star II and III, Shining in the Darkness and Riven on the Saturn. Also remarkable was the way it adapted and translated Wonder Boy II and III for the Master System and Monster World on the Mega drive to the brazilian audience. It brought games only released in Europe and Japan, like Battletoads on the Master System, International Superstar Soccer Deluxe and Yuyu Hakusho on the Mega Drive.

If ever there was an example of lofty goals being brought down to earth by reality, I think it's those two ports; though the Spectrum version looks almost decent in stills. The PC version does indeed have digital sound, so I suspect you have a config issue. A lot of the sound does seem to be missing, and it's fairly low quality, but moves and (some) impacts are there. The Roland option is also for MT32/CM32, not General Midi, and it does sound a lot better when playing with the correct mapping. Still a terrible port, though, and worthy of its spot on this list.

I can't understand all the hate for the Amiga port of Street Fighter II. Back then, I had it and had so much fun with it. Did beat it a couple of times but mostly played in 2-player mode with friends. Yes, it could have been better, but remember that unlike all other ports (PC aside), the Amiga was a home computer and had to load all assets into its limited amount of memory. Publishers insisted for too long on the standard A500 512k/512k configuration, sadly. I think it's a curse these days that we have access to all the other versions of whatever game so we can compare and choose the best. But this means we depreciate ports that were perfectly fine back then. I would also not call MERCS on the Master System a "piss poor" port. It's very limited hardware, so that is just unfair.

I did think mercs on master system graphically at least looks fine. The genesis version looks really close IMO, and I didn’t realize the upgrades. To me that would Make it better than the arcade. I do think the genesis was a sensible design for 1988, take high end common arcade components from the late 80s/early 90s and strip them down a bit to get it cheaper, and the end result does well enough on ports so long as they don’t use super scaler type hardware (though even there there’s some impressive stuff in later games)

Super Street Fighter 2 for the PC MSDOS, the game with DeeJay and the rest, was ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT. The best version of the game hands down. BUT! It would run meh in terms of speed if you had a 486DX33, which was what I had. A friend of mine had a DX66 and oh my god, that was smooth, fast, amazing gaming. That game should not require such a system back then to run properly, though. And this game had 6 button control. Or well, 6 key control. Everyone would play it with the keyboard because literally there were no proper 6 button controllers for PC, which was still stuck in the 15-pin analog joystick era.

Was it missing all the parallax scrolling like the 3DO port? Also, I don't see how it was a good port if you couldn't play with the decent controller. The whole fun factor of that game is tied to proper controls.

Arguably, the home computer ports do not even deserve the name 'Street Fighter II, only 'Street Fighter II-themed Fighting Game Product', or something. Regarding the circumstances they were developed (U.S. Gold scores the license, then outsources it to the lowest bidder, provides them a PCB if they're lucky, and expects 4-5 different versions for very differing architectures in 6 months), I guess they could be worse still? In the Amiga's case, it's obvious they didn't even have access to sprite sheets and had to puzzle animations together with whatever sprites they could salvage from whatever source.

Alien Syndrome was one of the sega master system(along with Golvelius) games that i played when i had the system. I remember renting Rambo(eh) and Alf(yikes) from the video store on the night that George Bush announced Operation Desert Shield.

I saw Alf on his shelf, and kind of want to know what the HELL it was lol I wonder what stuff would look like if Nintendo hadn’t been doing monopoly stuff to keep games off master system. One of the few games I’ve seen on both (that are the same have) is Star Wars, which looks way better on master system (how many colors can it use in sprites?). Looks easier/better too, though no read the nes version couldn’t have done the same.

@@rebeccasam3434 It's some kind of fumbling adventure where Alf needs to return home to Melmac, but to do so he must trudge through horrible bad stuff. Then there's the book, which resets your progress if you use it.

I dont agree on Thunder Spirits being a poor port, IT was the best the SNES could do on that game by itself without a helper chip.
@MaxwelThuThu
Жыл бұрын
No shoot'em up on SNES used helper chips (one single parodius game used for audio streaming) and they performed much better than this. Actually, most of them doesn't even use the faster ROM chip. Even if Thunder Spirits is a SlowROM game (it is), this does not excuse its performance. Space Megaforce is also SlowROM and doesn't have slowdown at all. Then you have Thunder Spirits slowing down because of your own projectiles.

Ninja Gaiden NES, Contra NES, Bionic Commando NES, Turtles in Time SNES, Tekken Tag Tournament home consoles, and Soul Calibur Dreamcast are the most famous examples of this. Master System version of Ninja Gaiden also deserves credit. Other examples I can think of for now include; Rayman 2: The Great Escape Dreamcast; Actually the version that was always originally intended. Compared to the N64 and PC versions, this has got to be the most refined version of the game. Soul Calibur 2 home consoles: Polished up graphics compared to arcade and exclusive characters. Virtua Racing Switch: An actual rebuild that unlike arcade runs at 60fps (though objects you can collide into are rendered at 30fps). Later on the game was patched to give you the ability to make the in-game colors more arcade accurate. Daytona USA HD (Xbox 360/PS3): Graphically an improvement over the original arcade version and controls are a very accurate translation. Double Dragon GBA: Graphical improvements and suffers from less lag than arcade. Gradius 3 SNES: This one is debatable, but I personally see this as being better than arcade (which contrary to popular belief also has lag). The SNES version like the arcade version is tough, but is forgiving enough to be the more enjoyable experience at home. There's the unofficial Root origin/Origin patch that fixes the problem of lag and unlike the vanilla SA-1 patch doesn't make the bosses feel unusually aggressive. R-Type Deluxe Atari ST and Amstrad CPC 2012: Not compared to arcade, but they're better than their original counterparts on such systems. R-Type Dimensions EX: Runs very well and can switch between original graphics and new graphics real time. Mario Bros GBA: Alright, so this is more of a remake. Still, easily the best way to play Mario Bros hands down. Super Mario Bros Special 35th Anniversary: Unofficial version of Special running on the same engine as Super Mario Bros. Puts to shame the older versions. Prince of Persia SNES: Blew past the older versions with ease. Metal Slug X: Basically Metal Slug 2 on Metal Slug 3's engine and a few other touch-ups. YS Book 1 & 2 Turbografix 16: Include the first two games together and this version is terrific in its own right. Valis (Sega Genesis): More of a remake, but easily the best way to play the original Valis. Unlike the older versions, this one is actually decent. Race Drivin' Saturn: Easily runs faster than arcade version. Not an amazing game these days, but this is the best version to go with. Samurai Shodown V Special: What the original version should've been like. Doom Resurrection 32X: Easily a large improvement compared to the first official 32X version. Music is even almost as good as the SNES soundtrack rendition. Marble Madness FM Towns: Very accurate translation of gameplay and soundtrack is even better. Sonic 1 and 2 Whitehead: More so remakes, but they are easily superior compared to their original Genesis counterparts; especially with the Sonic 2 special stages looking less messy. As for unofficial versions; there's now Sonic 1 Forever: Expansion Pack and Sonic 2 Absolute: The Community Cut. Sonic 3 Complete and Sonic 3 AIR: Sonic 3 Complete has not only the individual versions of Sonic 3 and Sonic &Knuckles, but also Sonic3&Knuckles. As for Sonic AIR, it has more consistent 60fps performance and contains smaller gameplay touch-ups. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD; Higher resolution textures and the Wii version of the game is included as mirror mode. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: More consistent 1080ps 60fps performance and battle mode is closer to the past games. Also has more tracks than Mario Kart 8 thanks to DLC still being provided currently. Resident Evil 4 Wii and Ultimate HD version: Both versions have additional content. Wii version has actually well implemented controls and Ultimate HD on PC gives you access to mouse and keyboard. Resident Evil: Deadly Silence and True Director's Cut: Deadly Silence is the most polished gameplay wise (not including HD remake and its remaster) and even has a new mode than adds new puzzles and knife fights with zombies. As for the unofficial True Director's Cut; it restores content from previous builds of Resident Evil. Resident Evil REmake HD: A remaster of the remake that gives you the option of modern controls and is even more visually impressive. After Burner 2 Saturn: Include additional options not in arcade and gameplay is even a more accurate translation of gameplay than 32X port. As for an honorable mention that isn't necessarily better than arcade but stands strong on its own is Virtua Racing Deluxe 32X. Compared to Genesis port (which is a competent effort); this is visually notably better and has new content that is welcomed.

"US Gold did not have the talent to handle these ports" You've just summed up every US Gold arcade conversion ever there Joe. US Gold were notorious for their piss poor ports. For further reference, see the 8 and 16 bit home computer ports of Outrun. The Amiga and ST game are laughably bad and the ZX Spectrum version runs at about 5fps.
