This video is about Evoluent's VerticalMouse D, with product number VMDLW, that stands for Large (size) and Wireless (interface).

A couple of months ago, I noticed discomfort in my right wrist and thumb. I usually know where my injuries come from and not being able to figure out what caused my pain could only mean one thing: 25-30 years of using a mouse finally had taken a toll on my arm.
I started searching the internet for information on the benefits of vertical mice and decided to try one. My impression is that, although vertical mice have been around for about 20 years, people haven’t really discovered them yet and the available information online is scarce, which is why I decided to do this video.
Through my employer (a Swedish municipality) I ordered an Evoluent VerticalMouse D. This particular mouse comes in two varieties; wired and wireless (not Bluetooth though). There are three sizes (small, normal and large) and obviously different versions for left- and right-handed.
The pain in my wrist disappeared after about a week of using it. A month later I decided that it was so good that I had to have one at home as well, so I bought two more, which I paid myself this time, one for me and one as a gift to my brother.
It's not a cheap mouse. I paid about 1400 SEK for each one (almost 140 EURO), but a few days later I found them at an online store for 999 SEK a piece (Christmas sale). I obviously got very frustrated, but these things happen, what can you do?
Weirdly enough, Evoluent seems to exist with two names on the internet. Apart from the link above, you might find it here too: www.bakkerelkh...
The product number is different and I think that the photos look a bit different as well. I haven't been able to figure out what's going on. If you have, feel free to comment.
So, to make this clear, this video is NOT sponsored! All three mice have been bought by either my employer or myself.
And now to the verdict:
Ergonomically, the mouse makes a ton of difference, and you will notice it right away. Now I wish I also had a vertical keyboard.
The quality seems to be very high. It responds very well; the buttons are where they should be and the groove makes it easy to find exactly where you should click for optimal result.
Placing your entire hand on the mouse, means that the total weight is increased, which in turn increases the friction. If you are using a textile mouse pad, as I was, you will soon realize that you need something with less friction. I am now using a plastic surface and the movement is much smoother.
30 years of using a regular mouse create some serious muscle memory. Re-training your fine motor skills is going to take time. Don’t expect to be as fast or as precise as you are with your regular mouse, one week after you’ve switched to the vertical one. Most likely not even after one month. It’s frustrating but give it time, it will pay off.
Evoluent needs to change the material of the mouse asap. It gives you the impression that your hand is sweaty all the time, even though it’s not. But unless your skin is very dry, too dry perhaps, it feels slightly uncomfortable. You get used to it after a while, but it’s a very unnecessary “bug” of such a fine (and expensive) product. They should have tested this before they mass-produced it. This is probably the only negative comment I have about this product.
If you have questions, feel free to ask.
