One of the creature comforts I find beneficial to grinding on a head is to use a workbench about a foot higher than your average table - 45" or so works for me. . Less stooping means less tension on back and neck. As you get older, this really does make for a better day.

Please man do yourself the gigantic favor & get a Cnc machine! I watched my boss struggle for years, because he was machining all day, while porting & valve jobbing for at least 6 more hours after dinner! We could barely keep up with our customers, especially if something failed, than I needed to be there 100 hours a week just to try to catch back up! It got bad, where he couldn’t take anymore customers, even though our shit on the circle tracks were normally 1 2 & 3 every weekend! Sometimes if a customer blew his shit up, due to overrunning his lightweight parts! It was really our fault, because we couldn’t fit him in! Customers were picking up there rebuilt/repaired engines, Friday morning just after I broke it in & made a couple quick tuning hits on the dyno! To rush either back to there shop if local, or straight to the track to meet the rest of there guys already there with the race equipment & car w no engine! This was back when only the very few hidollar teams had a backup engine! We actually had two, which were almost never in shop, due to we hadn’t finished there new engine yet, so luckily we had a few backups to save our asses! Well this he worked himself sick, customers would go to our competitors because they had the new machinery, were they could set it & walk away, to multitask! Even though he didn’t make the power we did & was higher cost! By like 5 grand per! Well of course he gets ahold of one of our engines, because of our backlog, & found all our little tricks! Which accounted to the 15hp we had over others! Short rods, thin rings, camshafts that had more than the 550 lift rule, advertised, but in the engine, they they had exactly 550 lift, instead of 535 installed! Well once he bought some new stuff, Cnc machine for heads, epoc for valve jobs, instead of grinding! New hone! We eventually caught back up, actually quickly! Raised our prices to pay for those machines, only had to work 10 hours a day instead of 20! But than we had to completely redo our setup & R&D all over again, because others had caught up! It’s not easy to find say another 10 on a 355 2 bbl engine! Although everything being exactly the same & correct, got us close! We also had winning 4bbl 358s & outlaw stuff! Never mind the drag stuff! Love your videos! Do it while demand is high! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I did a D-port to the 1406 on a set of 461 cast iron heads. Seemed to work good. That was a few years ago but I do remember it was a bit close on gasket sealing. Not a problem though. Thanks for all the videos Eric.

Eric, I'm curious to know if flow testing using a blow-through bench rather than a suck through bench would have different results based on where the high and low pressures are created as in a boosted intake (blower/turbo). Have you ever performed or worked with a blow-through flow bench? I'm currently building my first roots-type positive displacement sbc and was curious what the differences in porting do for forced induction vs. engine demand induction.

How do you maintain consistent port grinding to each cylinder? Do you use your calipers, measure a few spots in the depths of the ports and try to match those dimensions in the next ports? Trial and error?

Excellent information, this is a fairly simple modification that pertains to my eagle 5.7 D-port heads and their lack of exhaust flow. If I can go from 180 cfm @ .500-.600" lift to 200ish+ it'll be worth the time. Thanks!

Have you had any issues using a 90% throat on the exhaust? I do a lot of turbo builds so I’ve been staying conservative using 87% exhaust throat to help against the seat falling out due to the high heat. JD
@WeingartnerRacing

Nope and i have gone to 93%. The seats are oversized from the factory. To date none have fallen out.

Do you try to port a set of intake/exhaust ports to match a certain flow ratio (Like 75%)? Or, do you just go for the maximum flow possible in each port? I've seen porters do it both ways and claim good results. It would seem that custom cams would be needed if the port ratios got too crazy.
@WeingartnerRacing
2 жыл бұрын
No I don’t believe in the ratio bs because you could just make the intake port flow worse and your ratio would go up.

Love your videos, you explain well. Am curious about throat diameters. Too big is bad, but what if an intake runner is on the large side for the size of the engine, (or rather, application)? In that case (except for full tilt race) is there any benefit to keeping the throats a little smaller, like 85-87% to enhance velocity or is the 89-90% optimal on any application? And for the exhaust? Thanks!
@WeingartnerRacing

If you make the throat to small it just makes more of a restriction.

Some really good stuff here. I do have a question; since the exhaust is supersonic and the flow bench is subsonic how does the transition pan out as far as how each flow differently reacts or is it merely a comparison your looking for? In other words, supersonic flow behaves differently than sub and then you have the super heated element of the test, how do you calculate that going from subsonic flow to supersonic? What truly happens at mach speeds which occur locally and are pulsed? Flow reacts differently sub versus sonic especially in a venturi. Thanks Eric, keep up the great vids.
@WeingartnerRacing

You are correct. The flowbench is almost worthless for designing an exhaust port because of much bigger differences in pressure. It does give you some info though. The sound it makes is the best info for me.

Well presented, Eric...good info....I've been re-working cylinder heads, stock and aftermarket since the late 80's when I bought my Superflow 600. I am building a 426 Gen 3 hemi with the big port Eagle heads. They are NOT like the usual older heads, as they rely a LOT on port shape as opposed to random straight grinding. It was a massive learning curve for me; I got some serious #'s with them, but...what experience have you got re-working these?

Would you prefer to start with any particular type of head? I know a more expensive head is probably better to start with , but any brand mortals can purchase that you like? I'm particular to the AFR stuff for a Ford but would purchase another brand at the same price point if it gave me a better starting point. Once again amazing content and information. Keep up the great work.
