I've always seen nightwork as a black metal take on the sound of opeth and katatonia at the sound, a truly progressive and melodic take on 90s black metal

I think those bands are very closely linked as a matter of fact, you might even add Edge of Sanity or Opthalamia into the mix. Dan Swano produced most of their records if I recall. I still own all of their albums and they are all perfection.

I was obsessed with this band's final two records either towards the end of high school or for the few years after graduating... I revisited recently 10+ years later and it still holds up. I've mostly given up on BM with a few exceptions like GBK, DsO, WITTR, and some other stuff that maybe is more accurately black n roll at times (Shining and Young & In the Way). Most melodic shit + most symphonic shit falls into the cheesy category at this point and it's not able to click with me. Black metal is always capable of being great, but so many of the artists have done a shit job at differentiating from generic trem picked "riffs" with lousy wimpy drumming.
@NeroAngelo616

Nothing quite like revisiting an album after 10 years that you liked but wasn't hyper about (Filosofem in my case) inadvertantly hear shades of what that album inspired during the years in between (WITTR, sunn o))), Electric Wizard, Darkspace, Lurker Of Chalice, Teitanblood etc) only to retry it and have it completely split open your head let alone like it more. I've had a mini revelation with NIghtwork after finding out it's Katatonia connection but above was on a decade long scale of finally clicking to pretty much be the most important album.

Listened to Nightwork and Death's Design a few times, but honestly never got into Diabolical Masquerade as much as other acts. This has been a reason to retry them and there are so many similarities in voice to that of Sigh. I never knew the Katatonia connection but it makes full sense whereas the Emperor one doesn't I dunno besides symphonic/ synth. In fact. There's definitely a gothic black element to this that if you haven't heard Moonspells first two albums what are you doing? As for experimentation across other genres within the second decade of the 90's for black metal you can pretty much thank Filosofem for that, it's the foundation.

Wyatt, I was not impressed with Diabolical Masquerade. I listened to this whole video and I was expecting something even better than Griseus. But this is not experimental or boundary pushing in the slightest. It sounds like a much happier version of Dimmu Borgir or Emperor. The "symphonic" elements sound like the MIDI music that they used to play in the 1990s Mr. Olympia contests. I'm surprised you would describe any of these riffs as "sinister", they sound bright and optimistic in a way almost like a black metal equivalent of Lykathea Aflame, but not nearly as good. I wouldn't say it's bad or unlistenable, but very basic, predictable, melodic, accessible, and uninteresting. Listened to Nightwork and I'd give it a 5.5/10. After this I really just wanted to listen to both Aquilus albums.
@lesterama6110
2 жыл бұрын
You are correct with the early 2000's being weird for black metal. For one side, you have Dimmu Borgir going with a bigger production; then you have bands obssesed with industrial elements like Dodheimsgard, Mayhem on Delcaration of War, ...And Oceans and Red Harvest; and lastly you have those progressive bands like Diabolical Masquerade, Arcturus, Borknagar and Emperor when they released Prometheus. I still view that era with a lot of nostalgia
