Pleasant Hill is located in Cass County, Missouri. It got its start in the 1830s as settlers made their way westward. By the time just before the Civil War broke out, the town had been rapidly growing and held a sizable population. In 1861, the Civil War and Order Number 11, which established martial law throughout the area, devastated and destroyed the town. Everyone who had been living there lost everything, which is the fate my great great great grandfather (1799-1879) and his family endured here in this exact area at this time.
Pleasant Hill quickly pumped back just after the war, however, as the railroad became established and brought in booming industry, rapidly exploding back to life the local and regional economy. Though the rest of his family had retreated back to Kentucky, my great great grandfather (1839-1904) did not give up on this area. He came back after the war ended to rebuild and establish a productive life in Pleasant Hill with his new family after marrying in 1866, working as an early druggist in the town, and later, an insurance agent up until his death. It is easy to see how his experiences here in this town at that time affected his life, choices for his family, and career! Isn't history fascinating?
Much of the historical information I share in this video is from resources posted by the Pleasant Hill Downtown Association, the City of Pleasant Hill and a Historical Resources Survey from May 2004 by Historic Preservation Services LLC, or other online and/or other additional posted historical markers and plaques.
