If you have seen my previous video detailing an autumn bike ride exploring the the Rock Island Trail in Lee's Summit, MO, in that I talk in depth about some of the history of the Rock Island Railroad Corridor in western Missouri- that same history applies here in the location shots in this video, too.
In the other Pleasant Hill video I posted just prior to this one, I do an architecture and history walking tour of the historical town of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, where I also I recently discovered I have ancestral history in this area dating to the mid-to-late 1800s.
In this video here, we walk and bike portions of the Rock Island Trail Spur outside of Pleasant Hill in Cass County off of Big Creek. This is the area where my ancestors had once established their settlement before 1861 when the start of the Civil War occurred, followed by the area's very dire "Order No. 11."
J. Harry was my great grandfather, born in 1886 in Independence, MO to Andrew and Caroline who had settled in Pleasant Hill in mid-1860s-70s after the war. J. Harry grew up with many sisters and brothers of which he was the youngest. J. Harry went to school with his friend Harry S Truman in Independence in the 1890s.
In this video, I read 18 year old J. Harry's written first-hand account of his August 1904 train trip journal which details his travel experiences with his siblings and cousins. It was passed down in my family over the years and has never been shared until now. He writes about traveling from Independence, MO to Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky, glimpsing the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair from the train along the way.
J. Harry later went on to marry my great grandmother Alma three years later in 1907 in Kansas City, MO. He passed in the 1960s.
Most footage here was shot Oct 22, 2020 having returned to the area for a bike ride on Oct 31, 2020 in footage towards the end.
