Eye floaters are small specks, spots, or thread-like objects that appear to float in the field of vision. They are typically seen as small dark or transparent shapes that move around as the eye moves and are often most visible against a bright background.
Floaters are actually tiny clumps of gel or cells within the vitreous, the clear, gel-like substance that fills the inside of the eye. As we age, the vitreous becomes more liquid and can sometimes pull away from the retina, causing the clumps to cast shadows on the retina and appear as floaters.
While floaters are usually harmless and don't require treatment, they can sometimes be a sign of a more serious condition, such as a retinal tear or detachment. If you suddenly experience a large number of floaters, flashes of light, or a loss of peripheral vision, it's important to see an eye doctor as soon as possible.
