It's not crazy. EW systems have far longer detection range than the actual radar. Unfortunately, EW systems have trivial or non-existent modelling in DCS.. Very few carry even carry jammers. And even fewer still carry a true EW system. Most systems called "EW" are stupid jammers.

@ Longshot. That was intense. Thanks. Ace Combat 4,5,&6 pilot lol Tips: break that f-22. You don't feel Gs so throw it around. Hammerhead stall style. Feel free to tap WW1 biplane to WW 2 P-51 to A-10 tactics for low speed combat. My favorite: 0-g stall. Remember, HARD brake into the turn, full throttle coming out. You need to use the brake more. My slowest speed in Raptor is 167mph... against three F-15s and a...Mig of some sort. Love that Vector Jet. That's a Nasty opponent...all the SUs are. I liked the look of the SU-30mkII, kinda like a U-2 warrior version.

Dunno. GS loves his standart Merge/dogfight setups. They are cool in their own way and good skillset training, not gonna argue that. But LS seems to like thinking out of the box and his scenarios are kind of what if scenarios. Also a bit less scripted in the setup. Hm. Prolly sumns it up. GS is textbook, LS is out of the box. Both good in their own right. Btw I notice GS lacks something, LS doesn`t: LS is extremly quick to use guns instead of missiles if the opportunity arises.

Longshot, as for your theory for stealth and dogfights, I sort of can agree, I feel like for now, stealth aircraft will rely on L band radar and RWR to find each other then the stealthier aircraft will win, the Felon in this mod clearly is too stealthy, it’s nowhere near this good in real life and the raptor should win almost every time in BVR, but for two equally stealthy jets you really do have to push to the merge, so in theory 6th gen aircraft will have to have an entirely new alternative to radar it’s crazy how advanced technology is getting
@martinpalmer6203

The Raptor has no means to detect the Su-57 BVR, the Russians knew that when they designed the Su-57..that is sort of the point of the aircraft, to be undetectable BVR and superior WVR. They have very likely achieved that goal. RCS analysis suggests the Su57 is stealthier than the F35 from a frontal aspect and a bit less than the F22, but enough that it wont be detected before its in Visual range.
@theamericancommie727

@@martinpalmer6203 yeah the fact that the su-57 inlets are exposed and the radar literally picks up the turbines says otherwise. Your theory about BVR fights becoming obsolete is actually pretty interesting. I could theoretically see us entering a phase in the near future when stealth technology is so good that opposing jets are practically invisible to one another's radar systems. Perhaps we will see a renaissance of the golden era of visual range dogfighting except this time the jets are basically thrust vectored UFOs with super advanced missile systems and gun platforms.

I had the same thought. The advantage of stealth in an air-to-air role is the ability fire on an enemy who can't fire back. If both sides are stealthy, than detecting the other will be delayed until close range. While we don't know the exact capabilities of modern radars and at what ranges they can engage stealth aircraft, it's probably a fair be to say that dogfighting will be a key component of 5th gen vs 5th gen fights and possibly into the 6th gen.

Your thinking is correct. Also keep in mind amount of jamming expected during such engagements, so it will be extremely hard to identify other plane at long range. And you also have to keep in mind how area can be controlled by long range SAM systems with multiband radars which can detect even "stealth" planes and fire at them to suppress them.
@kalle5548
2 жыл бұрын
As far as I’ve understood SAMs can detect but not fire at stealth jets because whilst their search radar can find the aircraft, the targeting radar can’t, so no lock to use for guidance, maybe you can fire into the general area and the pilot will treat that as a lock?
@Warriorcat49
2 жыл бұрын
@@kalle5548 Most SAMs can't be fired without a track, and many self-destruct when the targeting radar loses track. You can't generally steer them manually in a general direction like a wire/optically-guided missile or something. And yeah, some search radars (I think L-band?) can see stealth fighters (this doesn't work against stealth bombers like B-2, ironically, because they are larger) at extended ranges compared to radars which use higher frequencies, but their resolution is way too low to provide any kind of track. You basically just have the information that there is something out there.
@xmeda
2 жыл бұрын
@@Warriorcat49 Exactly, you can use various detection methods, include passive arrays (that can detect many stealth object with good succes rate, but not pin-point them usually) and just fire barrage of missiles into area where you expect enemy plane(s) to be. If large AA missiles explode, it creates fairly large cloud of debris and shrapnel that can easily damage jets thanks to their own speed. If you fly around 800-1200km/h and you hit any small piece of debree, your plane will be severely damaged or even destroyed. And large SAM systems are perfectly capable of this. The most dangerous thing is, that you as pilot might not even notice the incoming missile if it is not trying to do active radar homing... you just see something coming very fast and then boom.. no warning. But yes, it requires some operator skills and some luck :)

R1: Second turn kill....nice. Perhaps the next development in detection hardware will be acoustic monitors on terrain features.

I served in the navy for about a decade until 2019, from what I can tell we're moving in the direction of unmanned vehicles, ships and jets. Moving and operating at speeds humans are just not capable of. That's the future of combat for highly developed combatants.

I find it odd that there was enough of a possibility of him getting a lock on you from the front with his heat-seekers despite the fact that the Raptor has almost nothing in the way of thermal signature to lock on TO from the front (its nozzles/exhaust is specifically designed to mask thermal signature from anywhere but the rear), yet you struggled to get any kind of lock on him even from behind, even though his exhaust/nozzles are not stealthy AT ALL. Also odd that you couldn't detect him first, given that the Su-57 sacrifices some stealth for maneuverability and weapons payload.

DCS 5th Gen is good for entertainment, but not realistic at all. The true capabilities of these planes are state secrets, and the mods that they are using are just good guesses.

Alot of thing people dont realize or know this about SU-57s is that, they actually cant fly stable without thrust vectoring. This due to there small stabilizers, to fit a certain stealth aspect they were trying to acheive. But this has more disadvantages than it does advantages from what ive heard. Something about the way it interacts with the flybywire system is weird and the pilot actually has to somewhat manually control it. The raptor on the other hand can fly true, it doesnt need vectoring to fly stable, vectoring is just an added bonus, and its normal sized stabilizers add to manueverability.. So you turn thrust vectoring off on both planes, the raptor flys fine, while the su-57 im not sure would even still be able to stay in the sky. We also came to the conclusion with our own testing of 3d vectroring that yaw vectoring isnt as important as pitch, and a 3d nozzle is much harder to hide IR and conceal than a 2d one, look at the raptors 2d nozzle for instance.

@@w_elder2199 About wich? the 3d vectoring not being important? we came to that conclusion the f-18 harv, x-31, f-16 MATV were all testbed thrust vectoring aircraft, we were messing with that before anyone else, look up notes on it and youll see the conclusions they came to. The SU-57 not being able to fly stable without vectoring i actually recently read in an article that goes over alot of things about the jet written by a former airforce guy, id have to look in my history for the link but im sure you could find it if i stumbled across it.

I agree 100% with your assessment with your introductory rant. With stealth improving to the point to where bvr will be useless, I believe that we will come full circle to the days of WWII dogfights, where almost all the fighting will be done within visual range, because that's the only tactic that will be effective anymore. Will these future generation warplanes still have BVR tech? Absolutely, for 5th and 4th generation aircraft will still be in the skies for quite a while yet. But yeah, you are not the only one that thinks this.
