As a Hoosier, have always known his works. My favorite is remembering my dad reciting When the Frost is on the Punkin (yes, that's how he spelled it). Great tribute to him, thank you!

As a kid, Riley Days in Greenfield was one of the main things I always looked forward to. James Whitcomb Riley was a huge icon to all of Central Indiana. Between Riley Days, Riley Hospital and Riley Park; there is so much that revolves around him and his works have always been told to children growing ip. Love seeing your stuff, and I love seeing icon from my home being recognized. Great Job Chris.

As a Hoosier all my life, I knew about Mr. Riley and studied some of his poems in school. I did not know anything about his difficulties and learned a lot from your biographical information. Also, Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis was named for him and is one of the best in the country. Thanks for your work!

Love his poetry. My mom always recited When the Frost is On the Pumpkin. My husband can still recite Little Orphan Annie he learned in school 70 yes ago. We try to go to his grave on October every year. Someone leaves cigar and whiskey and school kids draw pictures and leave on his grave along with pennies.

On a personal note, one of my mother's fond childhood memories, was laying down with her grandmother for afternoon naps while reading "Little Orphan Annie" comics. She told me she detested naps. But reading the comics with her Gran made it bearable. This was during the 1930's

While I know of his work, I am more familiar with the hospital that was dedicated to him. Growing up I went to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. Riley Hospital saved my life when my twin brother and I were born. Due to the love and support, I and my family received from Riley is why I now work at a children's hospital. I get the opportunity every day to give back a little of what I once received, and I wouldn't change it for anything.

As a lifelong Hoosier and living most of my life in Indianapolis, I was raised on his works. My daddy loved reading. When he passed, my husband's aunt, from New Jersey, sent me a beautiful card with Riley's poem "Away" on the inside. She wrote that she had never heard of him, but she found a poem by him and she said she hoped I liked it. I cherish it. Daddy passed in 2003. I still have that card, and the note, in my cedar chest.

I grew up in the same County, 10 miles from Greenfield, IN. As a child, I memorized L'il Orphant Annie. I'm 60yrs old and can still recite it. Greenfield has a "Riley Days Festival" every October. Also, Riley's boyhood home was/is open for tours on Main Street in Greenfield. I remember especially, a display of the "pants and roundabouts" from the poem. (A garment with buttons all up and down the front and sides.)

Growing up (and still today) he was always one of my very favorites, and growing up in Indianapolis myself that just made it all the more special. Of course we studied his works quite a bit growing up and the first book of poetry I ever bought was The Complete Poetical Works of Riley and then when they built a new children's hospital in the city they named it in his honor.

His name sound familiar . Once you said poetry. I collect poetry also I write poem have submitted some. Once you said that about poe..it clicked. I heard that story. In high school. Longfellow more famous poets If I found a book I would buy it. I must get my library together and document my books. I used to collect books with well known poets, male and female. Poems don't have to rhyme. A lot come from true life experiences. Thank you for showing this.i do remember he had a rough life. This make me want to arrange my library. I have a lot of books. I'd love to have one room with a wall with shelves for my books. You just inspired me. I.love reading. It's a good way to relax and unwind. With audible books more are listening, rather than reading. I.like both. Over the years book have shrunk. Hardback and paperback. I mostly have to go on line search for books now.i had contacted Doubleday Book company. They have yet to respond. But they have been around a long time. Maybe they have changed names. Most my membership number. I have found it I could order books they trusted you. Last time I ordered off line was 2013. Good video. 👍💯💜. Take care. Love, respect and positivity always Poetry lovers should know his. Name as well as poetry collectors. Good find. Neita james.👋🙂.

Aside from IMS, this is my favorite spot in all of Indianapolis. His home is equally amazing. I know I have mentioned this. When my youngest was 3, we visited Crown Hill for a class project for my oldest. Normally there are several coins on his grave. I was trying to get a picture of his grave, when I heard several people giggling. I put down my camera and noticed my 3 year old picking up the coins and putting them in his pocket. I told my son to put the coins back. He promptly said "Why, Mama? He's not gonna need 'em".

It's strange that you mentioned Edgar Allan Poe, the day Riley was born October 7 1849, is the very day that Poe died, Poe likewise lost his mother, and had a very contentious relationship with his adoptive father. Riley, like Poe suffered from alcoholism and financial woes throughout his life. If I believed in reincarnation, I'd say that there's a connection here.🤔
