Really hard to hop on a 100 or 200 or 300 after flying on the 400. It will always be the Q400 and it will be flying in Canada and elsewhere for many years to come. To me it is real flying and the PW 150's have soooo much power. Cannot wait to see how the De Havilland Calgary plant modernizes them with new engine tech. One more bathroom is a must too. At Washington State University, these are something of an icon, being the only airliners serving the community for the past few decades. Alaska even had a Cougars livery, which was always a treat to see. The E175s that have come to replace the Q400s are certainly nicer and preferred by the people here, but they just don’t have the charm. There’s nothing quite like a window seat where you can see both the landing gear and the turboprops at the same time.

I had the privilege of flying on AS's Q400 3 times. They were my first (and so far only) turboprop aircraft I have been on. I flew them exclusively between RDD and SEA. In fact, the flights to RDD were my first introduction to Alaska and how I fell in love with the airline. I flew on the Huskies special livery and also on two others. It was such a treat to see the landing gear come up and down during takeoff and landing. I will miss them, but first class on the E175 is a worthy trade-off

Living in Toronto I always loved the fact that they were made in TO. Honestly I’ve flown millions of miles and the roughest turbulence I ever went through was on a Dash-8 from Toronto to Moncton and I never felt unsafe as this plane was built like a tank. Sad to see them leave the fleet.

At 25,000 feet any turbulence has always been light to moderate and only for maybe 20 minutes. It always felt like a jet experience except there is vibration closer to the massive props. I like e175's with the aisle that curves when entering tiny biz class. But e175 will never have that feel of a converted search and rescue plane that is the Q has when approaching the 4,000 foot runway at Billy Bishop airport. Best plane Canada ever built until the a220. But Q is way more fun to fly on.

Sad to hear they’ve left the fleet. Only ever flew one round trip on one and it was back in 2021. That engine sound is so distinct and I loved they pffftbbbb sound when they’d shut down or use reverse thrust. It was also neat to see the landing gear deploy and retract. Bummed I missed an opportunity to take the last flight on one since I’m currently in Spokane. There college livery series was awesome and have seen several of them over the past 4 years, hoping they’ll paint some E175’s to match. I also loved how efficiently they boarded them at SeaTac with the gate claim bags on a cart right outside the door and the bags all going to baggage claim at our regional destination airport. I worked on these aircraft in the pdx hangar the last 4 years. They where definitely a lot more work to maintain than the jets but it made up for it in just how mechanically interesting it was. Porter just received their first E-175, I suspect they might go the same route as Alaska Air in the coming years and retire their Q400s. I do heavy maintenance on Dash 8s and getting parts in a timely manner has been such a hassle, causing major production delays, I suspect it's turning a lot of airlines off of the aircraft and pushing them to explore other options such as the E-175. Either way I'm sad to see Alaska Air's fleet go as it was a pleasure to work on their aircraft.

If a regional airline has the opportunity to replace Beech 1900d's with these Q400's it is a must to do so. Out here here in Far East Canada I flew on recently converted Austrian Airlines Q's. 20 year's old, no window shade but clean as a whistle. The Austrian Q's had way better leather seats than Porter's new overly slimline pull-on fabric experiment. But it is not about the seats it is about the rumble of one engine while taxiing and then the spool up of two PW 150's. Amazing climb performance.

years ago (2004ish), I was gliding with the Air Cadets at CYSN. The factory demonstrator Q400 came in. CYSN doesn't get many planes that size so all of us were quite excited. Lunch time I ran into the flight crew at the Wendy's up the road. I got to chatting with them and had a billion questions about their plane. They were great guys that patiently spent their lunch answering some random, over caffeinated, kid's questions. When I asked about takeoff/climb performance the Captain got this devilish grin and said "You won't believe it unless you see it. We'll do a short field takeoff for you when we leave, we're really light too so it'll be really short." Sure enough, after lunch, they fired up that Q400, backtracked on runway 24 (5000' long) and poured the coals to it. They were airborne well before taxiway Bravo. I'm just guessing here, they probably used less than 2000' of runway and they looked to be about 2000' or more up by the time they passed the Skyway. He was right. I would not have believed that performance if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. If either of those guys reads this, thanks for a heck of a show!

How can Alaska Airlines say they're replacing them with their Embraers? The Embraers are not similar aircraft at all. Sure it's a regional plane technically, but turboprops are much more economical on shorter routes. There's benefits of the Q400 Alaska is missing out on by retiring them. Especially in these times of increasing fuel prices. These Q400's are less than 10 years old, makes little sense to retire them when they're some of Alaska's most important aircraft.

Sad to see Dash-8 go. But with uncertainty about its future and lack of production, I can underestand airlines planning to retire them. But on a bright note, with MHI opening a new maintanance centre in USA, American Airlines has agreed to re-introduce the CRJ-200. So perhaps if De Haviland Canada builds up confidence in future of Dash-8 it can turn around its terminal decline. But it doesn't even have a assembly hall to consider restarting production. And with FlyBee gone, and Porter not likely to survive with its transformation into a direct competitor to AC, losing the advantage of operating out of YTZ, I suspect those will go to. Hopefully they will bring back the original Toronto Island terminal once Porter goes bust instead of leaving what will become a white elephant in place. The original terminal was moved to 43.627960625375444, -79.39182764193716 on the Hanlan,s side of the airport. But is in a sad shape.
