I'd like to see the south shore to to downtown south bend. Make airport a stop, or how about combine the amtrak station since the NYC tracks are right next to it

make it a highspeed railway. make chicago build a trainline to connect the outer stations so you don't need to go into downtown to go to a different part of the city through rail

Buddy they don't have the money for high speed rail. Besides the South Shore isn't meant to be a high speed railway, its a regional line focused on commuter and local traffic.

I think the South Shore Line is ment to be just like SEPTA REGIONAL RAIL in PHILADELPHIA and it's suburbs. The SEPTA trains built by GE closely resemble the South Shore Line single level cars.

The South Shore Line originally ran to downtown South Bend. Why was it moved out? Now they want to move it back?

The way I heard it. When the south shore ran into south bend it was all street running. The city of south bend, didn’t really like this. Especially back in the 1970s when cars were a priority. So the city banded street running in the city. They want to keep the separation of road and rail traffic. So that’s why they wanna build a new downtown termjnal

The South Shore left downtown in 1970. Before my time in the area but path the trains followed was street running with the final station being identical to the one recently torn down in Michigan City (however the facade from South Bend was not saved for a future restoration). Moving to the airport followed freight tracks that were originally street running before being moved to the side of each road long before passenger use. Without that 1992 move to the airport I doubt the South Shore would still travel east of Michigan City. If the station is relocated to the west side of the airport I don't see it ever reaching downtown again. Most of the properties have been purchased to allow that connection to be made. While "downtown to downtown" is appealing the line needs to serve commuters who arrive by car. The stations need to be places where people can easily get to. The airport (with a new station) seems to be the best option.

It street ran in downtown, and after an incident in which a car lost its breaks headed into the downtown the city prohibited it from street running. So they cut it back to where the Amtrak is today. Then they moved it to the airport, which seemed better than that, but was never planned as a long-term solution.

@@justalurker66can’t you build a parking structure by a downtown station 😂. There’s large surface lots right near where the station would be. Not sure your worry about park-and-ride

So will the tracks be longer and where will they end

Too many stops in between South Bend to Chicago. Just do 1 stop per major town. It takes a lot of time to stop and to start.

Maybe for some but a ton of people in those smaller communities are still dependent on the train. Maybe once the double tracking is complete you can start seeing some express trains skipping some of the smaller cities but having every train skip so many stations is a death sentence to the line.

The French Z20500 EMU cAr design could be provided by Alstom in a 1.5 KV DC version only. They'd be the largest interurban cars ever !

@@nielspemberton59 ummm, no those are for fast stopping and for frequency that the SSL doesn't have. The Stadler FLIRT, Alstom Coradia Stream and Siemens Desiro can all be delivered in 1,5Kv DC as we have them here in the Netherlands. They have an top speed of 160 km/h (100mph), 200 km/h (125mph) and 160 km/h (100mph) respectively.

Still an unrealistic dream. Since covid… businesses and people don’t need to be in the same physical location to ‘do business’. Point 2 is St. Joseph County ‘lives’ in the Eastern Time Zone. Your ‘ideal’ job in Chicago will rob you of something you can never get back… your time! Which time zone will you ‘live in’ as you shuttle back and forth to Chicago? Add to that your travel time to and from wherever the mystical new South Bend station ends up being built at. Point 3… too many silly studies ($$$) have already been done with no forward movement and more importantly NO MONEY available from the state or federal governments to propel anything. Point 4… city and county officials talk, talk, talk. Their primary motivation is to get re-elected. Period. The current station was to be temporary when it came in to being 3 DECADES AGO! In St. Joseph County & South Bend the meaning of the word TEMPORARY is 30 years. Point 5… the train has left the station. Out of time. While the double track project is roughly 8 months from completion and the west Indiana corridor extension is under construction… nothing is happening east of Michigan City. And nothing will. A downtown station (the only REAL, long term solution) is already prohibitively expensive. Tomorrow, next week, next month, a year from now, 5 years… it will be unreachable.
