I had that same bike many years ago. LOVED that bike. The way I learned to start the big 500's was to turn on the gas and turn on the choke then lay the bike on the ground until I saw a puddle of gas on the ground then pick it up and kick once and done. Trick worked just as well on my KX500. Cannot remember the year of the KX500 but it was the last year before inverted forks. Was my favorite dirt bike I ever owned.

Don't see people's logic in laying the bike over, all you're doing is emptying the float bowl which gets refilled the instant you pick it back up maybe if it's old fuel in there I can understand that but leaving it filled in the first place for any length of time is a bad idea 🙈

I bought once of these (same year) back in the early 90s because I always wanted one. I'm not a big guy like you and I can tell you it was a nightmare to start and it a good way to injure yourself. The power was ridiculous -- not enjoyable on trails. My off road experience was numerous 125cc MX bikes (my first a '75 CR125 new). This 500 is best suited for open high speed riding and sand dunes. I only rode it a couple times and then sold it. I feared it more than the '75 Kaw H2 I had in college in the mid-80s -- that's saying something.

Layed there a good 25mins dying before my buddies came looking for me. I was 1 min into the trail from driveway. Generator was going for electricity so they couldn't hear me scream. I love how the expansion chamber is shaped to fit perfectly in with the side plastics. Or maybe it’s the other way around idk. This bike is an absolute missile though. Not for the faint of heart.

Riding a tuned Kawsaki 500 tripple back in the 70s a mate said come have a go on the CR. The thing put me in a tree on grass and yes never use 1st. I ride GSXR 1000 K5, Cagiva Raptor 1000, Zero SRF, and still on 500 Kwak tripples, Id still say CR500 the most evil fastest bike Ive ever ridden. Monster machine.
