You don't need to work with the public to understand Fawlty's attitude. Even in normal everyday interaction with members of the public, having to deal with dog walkers on footpaths who behave like a gas i.e. they consume any space they are in, or have to have a conversation in the middle of a path junction optimally blocking all routes; the smartphone dumb user who can't use a phone and walk through a doorway at the same time; the five abreast on the pavement brigade who walk at a quarter of the average walking pace; local roadworks that obstruct major arterial routes and take a minimum of a month to finish, and almost every time you have to negotiate them there appears to be no-one working no matter what time of day; and the drivers who fall asleep at red lights and take several seconds to wake up and move off on a sub 10-second green phase is sufficient to chip chip chip away at one's patience.

The best thing about Fawlty towers ( and other old shows ) is no matter how bad the lead man/ woman is we still like them and are on their side. Today the characters of lead men/women are not so likeable. That's not to say they aren't great actors, they are, but....they lack a certain warmth and empathy - maybe like a lot of people in the public eye these days.
