It's funny you say that it seems like it would be fun staying at the hotel, because there is a pub near me who a few months ago did a Fawlty Towers themed banquet night, where you went for food and drink and the waiters were acting as the characters from the show providing entertainment at the same time. I didn't go unfortunately as the tickets were way out of my price range, but I might be tempted to fork out for it if they do it again. It also somewhat mirrors the rise of restaurants like Karen's Diner where people pay for bad service.

Bernard Cribbins was really using his strength to struggle against John's and in the commentary John said that that made it funnier. Viewers can usually tell when actors are using only some of their strength. You can also see how on the ball BC's timing is when he takes his finger away from the phone as John slams it down.

Basil strikes again. Sadly, most of the supporting cast and guest actors have now passed on. Time to acknowledge Michael Gwynn (Lord Melbury, who died not long after his appearance), David Kelly (O'Reilly), and in this episode, the versatile Bernard 'Right said Fred' Cribbins (spoon salesman) and the ubiquitous David Cossins (corked wine customer). Of the regular cast, RIP Ballard Berkely (Major), Renee Roberts and Gilly Flower (old ladies), and last but not least, Andrew Sachs (Manuel), whom we lost in 2018.

There have been several adaptations of this series over the years. Produced for the American market, Chateau Snavely (only a pilot was produced). Amanda's (13 episodes produced). Payne (9 episodes produced). And in Germany, Zum letzten Kliff (only a pilot produced). John Cleese gets paid every time one of these adaptations is made.
@AmyLSacks

I tried to watch the *Snavely* pilot on here, but could only make it through about three minutes. A good cast, wasted. Their personalities are completely different than those of the *FT* performers and they weren't allowed to play to their own strengths but instead were crammed into a costume not made for them, basically. :(
@Blue-qr7qe

Some hotels supplement their earnings by keeping a percentage of their rooms occupied full-time, especially in areas where the business is seasonal (ski resorts, seaside hotels, etc.). These occupants are renters, basically, though they may receive benefits such as minimal room service. They're referred to as "residents" (as opposed to "guests"). At FT, the residents are the two elderly ladies and the Major. They serve as recurring minor cast members. PS. I am LOVING this. Loving your reactions. Early on i bought the box-set and watched them repeatedly till i could no longer look at them. Now i'm seeing them freshly with you. They really are fun. Thanks 💙 PPS. 'Like your reindeer sweater.

If I remember correctly, John Cleese loved this episode because of the acting of the two featured hotel guests. I also think the cork getting stuck in the bottle and Cleese trying to remove it wasn't scripted as it did get stuck. One of the things I enjoy is Polly becoming less of an employee and more of an accomplice as she's frequently helping Basil try to steer clear of trouble. I'm thoroughly enjoying re-experiencing this shows through your eyes. Thank you.

Okay DM. As South Park school counselor Mr Mackeymight say. "Pipes are bad m'kay. And pipe smoking is not good m'kay." Sherlock holmes has one. They are everywhere in middle earth. Lots of dead people used them. You can still see them on tv in shows and movies. And as an avid antismoker I can only say... Captain Black Cherry tobacco is the best smelling thing you can set on fire. I say Captain Black but I really can't remember who's product it was. It was many years ago and although I wasn't a smoker I still stocked and sold tobacco. The Cherry had a lovely aroma but I can't say anything about the taste. I'm so glad that you're doing these Fawlty things. Basil can't do anything right and it's amazing to see what he'll screw up next. Enjoy the season and keep up the good work. Luv ya

Mr Bean is definitely a recommend, along with Black Adder, but Are You Being Served might be hit or miss. I like it myself to some extent, but it's... what's the word... more corny. With those stock comedy characters, it sometimes feels like watching a Punch and Judy show set in a department store. It's the sort of thing you want to check out one episode first before committing to the whole thing. Young Ones might be more up Dawn's alley, because it's got Python-level violence and often makes about as much sense.
