Geoffrey Palmer had joked that despite all the other work he's done in film and television, including 9 series of 'As Time Goes By' with Judy Dench, the only thing people wanted to hear from him was, 'I'm a doctor and I want my sausages'.

The monty python team stayed in a hotel down south somewhere in the early 70s. The idea for Fawlty Towers came from that hotel stay and the god awful manager/owner and his wife. Within a couple of years Cleese and Booth were pitching the idea to tv companies. The first series aired in 1975 to mixed reviews but gained a following as it was aired again and again. It took another four years for the second series to be commisioned. Cleese and Booth were divorced between production of the first and second series but they revived their writing partnership for series two. Happy almost xmas!

The strike references are because this was 'The Winter of Discontent' when many were suffering under a cost of living crisis - sound familiar - and were demanding huge pay rises and going on strike when they were turned down. A 'scab' is someone who breaks a strike and continues to work weakening the strike action. The last two episodes were actually affected by strikes at the BBC itself. The next episode wasn't shown a week after this one as scheduled as it had to be delayed because of strike action and the last one couldn't be completed so there was a delay in broadcasting it at all. Episode 5/6 was shown on 28/03/79 but the final one wasn't aired until 25/10/79 !

The two seasons of Fawlty Towers aired in 1975 and 1979. John Cleese and Connie Booth were married from 1968-78, so they were divorced by the time these episodes aired, and probably by the time filming took place. There was a similar situation in the show Sherlock. Martin Freeman, who played Dr. Watson was married to Amanda Abington, the actress who played the woman that Watson married in the show, but the two actors divorced before the final season of Sherlock aired.

I think the previous episode or the one before had a lot of different characters, thus they take up air-time if you give them all screen-time, so that means characters like Manuel and Polly would have less screen-time if any at all. Like those movies with lots of superheroes, everyone has to have some face-time, thus you have less time to develop a few characters.

They are still cordial when their paths cross but never worked together again professionally.
