The genius of *Fawlty Towers* was, aside from the brilliant acting/staging/physical comedy, the density of jokes... each 30-some minute show was so stuffed with humor episodes like 'the germans' didn't see the arrival of the titular characters until the end !!!! It'd be interesting to see how this show stacks up...

No making fun of Germans... no making fun of Spanish... no making fun of the elderly... no making fun of the wife! ...no fun period. Here's hoping he says to hell with it and gives us something that stays true to it's origins...!

A large part of the enduring appeal of Fawlty Towers was that they knew when to stop, after 12 consistently good episodes. Watching a new series will feel a bit like watching a favourite veteran band that used to be really good once, but insist on touring with hardly any original members and a vocalist whose voice has long gone.

@@ralfp8844 I don't know. I saw Cleese's comedy show in Seattle a year ago, and it was moderately funny, but no more than that. Don't get me wrong--I still love Cleese, and he's surprisingly sharp and engaging for his age. But he just isn't the force he once was. Few people in their 80's are.
@ralfp8844

@@Unknown-jt1jo Hmm, sadly that could be true. It's a common phenomenon for geniusses, that they peak early and then have a hard time in holding their own pace. But there are cases where experience and the right circumstances do the best job. In germany we had Loriot, who was a pefectionist too. He even got better in some terms whilst growing older, having congenial partners. I have some confidence. The fact, that he has a new coauthor, his daughter, and he says it's similar to the old days in the 70th, is a good sign. Also that the world itself is even crazier now, or at least we see it now, gives more content. Let's see, at least we are not too disapointed, if it doesn't work.

Fawlty Towers satirized the pompous, the arrogant, the intolerant, the bigoted, the racist, the pretentious, the frauds, and more. It didn't make fun of the Germans or the Spanish or the elderly, etc. If you think that it did, you miss the point of the show entirely.

You people realise this is a stage play right? That''s a whole different experience to watching something on TV. It's not competing with or replacing the original series in any way. It's just for people who like going to the theatre, it's of no concern to people who don't. Putting different actors in the roles just shows how brilliant the scripts are.

It would be a casting error, i guess. I love Jim Carrey, but he is best as a good guy, being a fool or an asshole or both on the outside only. Basil is an asshole inside, pretending to be a honorable guy. Nice to people, when he thinks it is needed and a pest if he thinks he is entitled to be. At least i took it so, maybe i'm wrong.

@@ralfp8844 I disagree Jim Carey would be perfect to play Basil Fawlty. Because, he’s so funny, just like John Cleese. They’re both actors that know how to play a role perfectly & add something more extraordinary to the character. In other words, they bring the character to life & give the audience a magnificent performance. Both are extremely talented. To be a actor is to be convincing within a role. And Jim,John Johnny Depp are truly sensational at doing that. I respect your opinion & deeply appreciate your comment, thank you. Wishing you a blessed day.

@@angelabrown7966 Hmmm... Carreys potential really shouldn't be underestimated. Especially because he developed an awesome deepness in the last years. Bit sad really. In the 1960s before Python, you would see Cleese playing a severe middle-aged British type on TV an in at least one feature film. Terrible acting and not at all funny. By the late 1980s he was in movies like 'A Fish Called Wanda' where he plays a rather stiff, repressed lawyer type. Again not funny. It was the maturing Palin who was the star of that film, not Cleese. The new FT will be a flop because the dumbed-down audience of 2023 won't understand or be interested in comedy that is about dysfunctional people. Cleese needs the money. Should have done that third series he was offered in 1979.
