I bought my feather second hand, but as new, for little over 100 euro. Glad I did, I used your tip about angle and minimum pressure together with a Kai blade. Resulted in a very smooth shave, bbs and zero irritation. Superb razor, thanks!

I'm brand spanking new to shaving with a DE Razor......I just tried my first shave with the Feather Stainless Steel Razor......I can't believe that it took me so long to try this kind of shaving!!! Contrary to what you say in your video I had no trouble whatsoever shaving with this razor; as a matter of fact, the experience was very enjoyable, no nics, cuts or even razor burn. The entire experience, from the feel of the blade to the sound it made was really neat. Thanks for your videos!

Outstanding review! Great explanation of how and why that particular razor works the way it does! One thing that you have done that I have not seen anyone else do, but, is extremely important is actually showing how the blade is seated within the head; which will show how much play the blade will have within the head! That was GREATLY appreciated!

Thomas, Great review, as always. I like the level of detail you go into. Before you even said the razor is not for a beginner, I concluded the same from your comments. Having started with a DE and wet-shaving only in early December, I am already researching a second razor. The Feather was one of one candidates, but no one else has done such an objective and detailed review. I will skip this masterpiece for now. Thank you! TK

perfectly done review. thank you for sharing. I'm thinking about getting one myself. I figure, I will be shaving for the rest of my life twice a week, it would be a good treat for myself to use a high quality product to make each shave more enjoyable. I made the switch over a month ago to safety razor and I will never go back to disposables. Along with a quality shave soap, shaving is now something I look forward to.

Hi Thomas - I've been meaning to let you know that the universe is in harmony once again, as I've been getting a near-perfect shave in one pass for the last few weeks. I really appreciate your thoughtful reviews, solid advice and cheerful demeanor as well. As usual, a small change made a very large difference. As soon as I turned the baseplate so that the sides face towards the handle... yes, I had it backwards. I'd like to suggest that rather than laughing (stop it), that you schedule this configuration for a review, because if you think about it, there is no way to get a milder shave without removing the blade or shaving with a balloon. No other razor deserves to have the title of safety razor more than this instrument. A few benefits: Reversible razor! Improved value - two razors for the price of one puts "high cost" in true perspective Impossible to cut yourself! (it would take some ingenuity) All new shaving technique! DSAT Safe Mode: After WTG, XTG and ATG, just add DSAT (don't stop at three passes)! I guarantee that with practice, if using this elegantly simple technique, even someone new to DE shaving will be able to achieve an even and intense razor burn. Research has hardly begun, but I think it's safe to say that the Feather could easily become not only the swiss watch of razors, but also the swiss army knife. Sincerely, (:p) Robert

Hey Thomas, I am new to DE razor shaving. After watching your video I purchased a Merkur set. I have a few questions. 1.) I can't seem to figure out how much shaving soap to put on my badger brush to get the type of lather that you seem to get. 2.) I get a much closer shave if I go across the grain, but I'm not sure if the shave is any closer then a cartridge?? I love DE shaving because it is therapeutic and cost effective, but are the blades in fact sharper than a cartridge? Thanks Menash

I want that brush!..what is that , brother? Yeah I don't know if that razor is for me. I'm still getting the hang of even an easy razor like my Merkur 34c HD ! Sometimes I get an nice close shave without any nicks or irritation and other times I am spotty and red until I get some Anthony Logistics astringent products going and a couple of hours for that to do it's thing. I need to get used to how my beard maps out...it's a puzzle. It's mostly one direction but still , I find I go over hard spots like my neck and chin too many times without realizing how much I am scraping away at my skin. Nice razor though man. Once I get used to the whole wet shaving deal, I might think about this for my collection.

Thanks for such an clearly articulated review of the Feather. I also appreciate the tip not to press hard, as that's exactly what I did on my third shave with this incredibly well engineered luxury beast. I just didn't want to repeat my previous two failures by resorting to a fourth pass with the reliable Jagger DE89LBL. Fortunately no real issues with razor burn - I think my pre-shave oil for both pre and post-shave helps in that regard. I'll avoid pressing hard, and trust that I'll get the hang of it eventually. I think you said that the best angle for you is closer to 45 degrees - I'll watch again to gauge that better. You were exactly on target about the shortcomings of this absolutely splendid razor. Yeah, it's really frustrating, but I don't mind so much when I'm being driven in a rolls royce. It's such a lovely shave that I could drive around for hours, although 15 or 20 passes might be a bit excessive for one day. :p Thanks again for the great review, Thomas!

LoL yeah that might be a bit too much. But then again, if you can comfortably do that many passes and enjoy the shave during and afterwards, dont hold back of you want to do it. Keep praticing, it IS a difficult razor, but it can give you absolutely great shaves! Thanks for the nice comments.
@robertmilton4914

Thanks for your response, Thomas, and hi again from the bay area (northern california)! I am sure that I did that many small passes today, adding the Jagger after the third pass for 3 more lathered passes followed by careful touchup, then followed by a lot of frustrated scraping that only succeeded in burning my chin. Up to this point, a 4th pass with the Jagger has been very successful in finishing the shave.. You're right that some would find this a challenging razor - if I knew of a better razor I'd consider returning this one. In any case, today's battle went to the Feather, and I survived to fight again. If you have any suggestions that might add additional curvature to the learning, let me know - with my thanks. You'll probably want to know how I prepped today - apologies for the length, but these steps might reveal an obvious error on my part.: 1, hot shower first 2. - just out of the shower, 5 drops of shave secret shave oil rubbed in palms, and from there, rubbed well into my face and neck 3. I usually lather with an escali badger brush in a tin of wsp unscented soap -it hasn't produced impressive lather, but it's more than enough. if I'm in a little bit of a hurry, as I was today, I'll skip the shave soap and use an Aveeno gel that creates a foamier lather. That could be the problem. 4. oops, forget 4 5. forget 5 too 6. - 3 passes with a fresh feather blade from the yellow pack, rinsing the razor often with hot water: WTG, XTG and ATG 7. to find the angle, I've been holding the razor perpendicular to the skin with the logo (which mars the beauty of the instrument) touching straight on and the razor perpendicular. Then I roll the handle forward just a little to find the spot where I think the blade is cutting - from the sound and feel. I microadjust the razor as it moves across the contours of my neck and face. I've tried various angles, of course, and get an even but not smooth shave. I don't think of myself as having a particularly coarse beard. -8. I try to use light, short, and somewhat rapid strokes, for the most part, similar to your technique, until I got really frustrated and started scraping away like a deaf and angry violinist. I adjust angles very slightly as it moves over different contours. And I try to let the razor do the work, and keep my hand and arm fluid and relaxed, 9. On the first day, after cutting 0% of my beard, I looked more closely at the blade gap and the blade itself, realizing that any firm tightening of the handle actually flattens the blade enough so it won't touch skin. So I tighten, then loosen the handle just enough to keep the head from spinning (it does come a little loose every so often which hasn't been a problem) 10. If I answer No to "close shave?", then I have been able to answer Yes by either pressing too hard or resorting to the Jagger for a fourth pass and a little touch up. I'm not sure why even that backup approach failed to remove much of the remaining stubble.. Again, thanks! No need to rush to respond - I'll need to give my chin a little rest. ;-) Thanks again - I really was impressed with your review and obvious enjoyment of the details. It's easy to see how wet shaving could become an obsession. Best regards, Robert +Thomas from Denmark

+Robert Milton Congratulations on the longest post ever on KZitem! 😉 Sounds good all in all. There will be a learning curve, keep going at it. Short, rapid strokes, but not too rapid or uncontrolled. You don't mention streching the skin. This can make a very big difference in the shave. Get an alumblok and smear in on your fingertips for better grip. Then strech you skin both by turning your head and streching with the fingers from the free hand. Could make a difference for you.

+Thomas from Denmark lol. Mark Twain: "I didn't have time to write a short letter, so I wrote a long one instead". Even I knew it was too long and made a quick pass to cut and compress my wordy and circuitous comment (see? I added unnecessary adjectives). Those are good tips, Thomas. Thank you! I'll order some alum, and focus on stretching the skin, which I went after it this morning with better results, but still too much stubble on cheeks and chin, after 3 passes.It occurred to me that could be having problems due to, or getting close to ingrown hair. Especially on my checks and chin, I'm seeing hair that doesn't stick out straight, cut lays on, or is a little curved back towards the skin. I hope I'm wrong because the best cure for that is letting your beard grow out.

It's my favorite razor and I use almost for every shave. I do not use it for headshaves, I must admit that I have gone back to the gilette for headshaves. It's much forgiving and more gentle to my scalp. On the other hand the gillette is very bad on my face, it results in razorburn and many little spots. So all in all you must find a solution that fits you. That's what works for you.
