Great video. Got a lot of laughs out of me. The general absence of half the population from playable roles is strange. I didn't realize how bad it was until I got "Defender's Quest". The only character you can play is a female character. I sat there perplexed looking for the gender slider. And then it hit me. This is what Women have been dealing with across almost all games for thirty years. Holy balls, man, holy balls. It was a bit of a wake up call. [PS. I get the irony of ending this with Holy Balls. I also think the nature of not even considering women as leads in entertainment is rooted deeply in (both intentional and accidental) misogyny. Entertainment is incredibly powerful on culture and society, acting like changing it for the better is pointless is an act of remarkable ignorance. Both historical and sociopolitical.]

A lot of people in these comments seem to be confusing playing as a 'character' in a single-player game with being able to choose between multiple 'characters'. Many single player games are as much or more about the character as about anything else; you can't customize characters such as Mario, Samus, Bayonetta, Kratos, and even Assassin's Creed Unity's Arno specifically because their games tell the stories of pre-defined characters. In some cases, such as Mass Effect, there is a large amount of character customization because the character him/herself is a largely blank slate to begin with. In a multiplayer experience with multiple characters to choose from there is no excuse not to have gender and racial diversity present unless the game takes place in a very specific setting which accounts for such a lack. Multiplayer in games tends to already largely contradict the plot or just toss it right out the window (Halo's co-op campaign and its standard multiplayer each respectively do these things), so any claims of 'it was to keep the story intact' are outright silly. On the flip side of things, your character when playing with others serves as a representation of yourself to both others and to you; female gamers make up a significant portion of the gaming community and it likely isn't exactly thrilling to them to have all sorts of forms of customization for their male-only representations of themselves (I certainly tend to play as male characters in games which offer a gender choice). Lastly, for those who say that 'it's not a big deal', I ask you to take a look at the storm of raw hatred and whining which springs up whenever an mmorpg springs up announcing 'gender-locked classes' (even when said 'classes' are specific, pre-defined characters appearing in cutscenes and the like); it's not exactly pretty and more than a few of these posts come from males wanting to play a female-only class. Look at things like this and then say whether or not you think it matters that a famous developer somehow can't fit a playable female character into the gameplay-driven multiplayer of their multi-million dollar AAA franchise entry.
@Seeric_io
9 жыл бұрын
initialdavid This is true for the self-perspective aspect of multiplayer as every player in the game is meant to see themselves as Arno (who is a pre-defined character) being helped by other assassins. That being said, character customization still matters as players appear as 'an assassin who is not Arno' to everyone else. The screenshots suggest some level of facial customization in the final game as not every 'helper assassin' looks the same (facial hair, different noses, mouths, etc), though it could also be that the faces are just a handful of random presets since Ubisoft seems to only ever talk about gear customization from what I can find (which just further brings up the question of why all those random presets are male in that case). In Ubisoft's case in particular this is especially odd as their logic behind the issue was not that 'everyone is Arno and Arno is male' and instead was 'females would double resources for animation, voice acting, and clothing'. It's true that such things would have cost more money and time (though the line about doubled animations seems odd and the majority of the voice acting presumably takes place in cutscenes where the character sees themselves as Arno anyway so unless they have several hundred different canned versions of 'Hello' and 'Follow me' it would certainly not double voice acting), but these aspects are unlikely to have been even close to the most time and money-consuming ones and the amount of backlash they're getting for it at this point already shows the decision to have been a mistake.

The problem with the AC thing is more about the excuse than anything else. I didn't see any actual character customization going on so they could of gone with "there isn't any character customization" that would of probably worked. Also, if there is actually character customization, they could say "huh, hadn't thought of that, I'll have to ask the team about that one", and simply by adding the feature in, they could of garnered tons of internet cred. Cred not only gained from considering a large portion of gamers, but also for actually listening to their fans. Publicity may be a good thing, but positive publicity is best.

Isles of Scion The complaint was not about the single player (which of course has always featured a particular character with a fixed name/personality/gender) but about the multiplayer (which in previous games has included diverse characters but in this game features four almost identical palette swaps of the main character, which is kind of ridiculous.)

Benjamin Scherer That is precisely the question that people were asking. This video is about a fictional game in which you can customize your character, not about AC, which is a different scenario. But the AC thing that prompted this video WAS about why the _multiplayer_ did not give you the option to play as a woman (when previous AC games had let you do so). And that's when the lame excuses started appearing.

The only reason most video game protagonists are white men is because of laziness and left over prejudices

It has to do with the general culture of insecurity among gamers, mostly. See, the thing is, people still remember vividly how Jack Thompson tried to forcibly censor games because he believed the content within them would lead to real-life violence. In the same vein, feminists are criticizing games because it contributes to a culture of sexism. Because of the Jack Thompson debacle, many are still quick to assume that saying the medium needs to change means that everything they love about the medium will be taken away. They're afraid that the games that they have grown so attached to will be snatched from their hands because people are taking feminist criticisms seriously rather than universally denouncing them like they did Jack Thompson and his ilk. And honestly, I can kind of see why they'd think that. I freaking LOVED Tomb Raider pre-reboot even though the main character was designed entirely for sex appeal, which seems fairly sexist when you really think about it. People believe that, if feminists who criticize games have their way, then all of the games they enjoy so deeply will disappear. No more Dead or Alive. No more Bayonetta. No more Cortana, Princess Peach, Alyx Vance, or anyone else who's characterization or design gets criticized by feminists. Basically, people fear that the end result will be a world where developers simply aren't ALLOWED to make the games that they want to make, and the games that gamers enjoy, because feminists will have the final say in a game's creative direction. This is, of course, complete bullshit. As long as there's a market for it, developers will always be able to make what they want. But gamers have had a history of being ostracized and ridiculed by mainstream culture, and people have time and again tried to forcibly censor games. We're defensive because that's how we've been conditioned to see things.

Zennistrad1 5 years late to it, but this is the best “understands both sides” take I’ve seen on the issue EVER. Though in the case of this video, I think the idea of not having gender options on a customizable character is totally absurd at this point! But in the case of single protagonists, it’s a murkier situation, especially because an annoying number of female protagonists have been written as “female first, protagonist second” meaning their gender gets more focus than their character development, which is huge missed potential especially when there are plenty examples of beloved female protagonists in the past like Samus Aran and Sarah Connor, to name examples from both movie and game. So when it comes to writers mucking that stuff up, it’s harder to be enthusiastic about deliberate decisions to make a protagonist female, since it comes with the worry that they’ll write the character as a statement and not an actual character. But with customizable characters, I can’t imagine they’d ever be mono-gender anymore. At least I hope not!

The issue is that in the multiplayer you are always the main character (on your console). So if you're playing with three other friends, they're each using Arno on their respective device and you'll appear as generic assassins (in this case male, I guess just to simplify). If it was a game where you were designing an avatar or had actual choice over how your character was going to look then I would be behind this 100%, but it seems weird to want to shape the gender of an avatar that you'll never see or use to interact with the game world.

When was the last time an RPG with selectable character did not have the option to be a female? Even back as far as 1994 with The Elder Scrolls: Arena you could pick female. There are very few games nowadays that offer class/race customization, but not sex selection. In fact, games that don't allow you play as a female character don't allow you to customize much more than a costume. That's because you're playing a story, as a set character. You are not playing yourself in these games, you are playing that character and their story. If that character is male, then you're playing as a male. Likewise, if that character is female, you're not going to be playing as a male. Yeah, I understand that there aren't as nearly as many games with female protagonists as there are males, but that's most likely because there aren't as many female game developers/buyers as there are males. It's just a product of the way things currently are.
