I wish there were more honest reviews like this on youtube. People that actually pay for the equipment they are reviewing. Every time I look at buying a new amp lately, all I see is a sea of positivity. Even in the comments section, or on review sites where literally everything is 4.5/5. Most reviewers don’t want to even lightly skim the negative aspects of equipment, presumably because they are worried about their industry freebies, content and revenue streams drying up

I have to admit that I don’t know much about sound engineering. But I own this amp and I absolutely love it’s sound. And it doesn’t sound like it does on your review! In my my home I get smooth, open and airy tones out of it. It certainly is small but to my ears it punches far above it’s size. I’ve compared it live against its brother the 68 Custom Princeton, and while the Princeton definitely sounds more open, they comparable.

If you like it, you like it - don't let anyone tell you different! Honestly, I thought it sounded pretty good close mic'd, but in the room it really needed a bigger cabinet to do itself justice.

Real review. Well done. How many pricey tube amps have been bought for home use that end up with disappointment because they’re one trick ponies, too loud, require another $300 of pedals etc. ?? Answer: lots.

You lost me when you expected a Vibro Champ Reverb to sound like a Deluxe Reverb. It’s built for purpose… I own and love this amp. I’ve own / owned heaps of vintage Fender amps. If you can’t get the Vibro Champ Reverb to sound good it’s not the amp.

Tubes go 100% bad in this amp. Don't know if it's the factory tubes they put in there are crap, or if it's a design flaws that eats the tubes.. but it's a fact. So if you purchase it be sure to have a set of fresh tubes.. or prepare yourself to send it back for warranty and tube replacement. I'm not bashing, just search a bit on this and you'll see

Thanks for the video. I think this is the same as the BF Princeton, and that is why you feel as many is that it's not loud enough clean with a drummer. But the Princeton is the most legendary recording amp.

This is actually a lot lower powered than a black panel Princeton which is about a 10 watt amp with 2 6v6 power tubes instead of a 4 watt amp with 1 like this one. The older tweed Princetons were single 6v6's with about the same wattage and do sound great!

The use of room, close and both to illustrate the amps true sound is class, sir. Its a great recording amp, a classic, for a reason but its SO misleading when I see advertisements for 1k+ boutique versions that sound *exactly* like every great recording.. when you know full well in the room it sounds like ass.
@adjustablebias

Agreed that compared to a close mic, in the room it is an entirely different sound! And given the price point, I expect that's actually what a lot of people are buying these for, hoping they can get something like one of the larger amps at a lower budget and volume level for home use (rather than recording). It's too bad that's not the case!

Thanks Mike! It's a Sony A7 IV, but I suspect just about any modern mirror less camera would look about the same. A lot of the look is just having a really big light source just off camera, which is relatively cheap with all the inexpensive soft boxes you can get on Amazon these days.

I love your expertise. So I have a question no one has answered: why are Les Pauls noisy? I have owned a number of them and they all have the noise. They are famous for it but no techs explain why and what we can do about it without smothering tone. Help?
@adjustablebias
Жыл бұрын
Noisy like hiss or hum when not playing? With a Les Paul with humbuckers, a Les Paul should actually be pretty quiet as long as you have your hands on the strings to ground it. Certainly a lot quieter than many single coil guitars (strat, tele or P90X equipped Giusy) on a single pickup. If it's not, there might be something wrong with the guitar... Humbuckers will often be higher output due to basically being two single coil pickups sandwiched next to each other, and thus they may make more noise or amplify weird RF interference like from florescent lights or dimmer switches more?

Gonna try mine through a bass amp, 1x15, that has an effects loop to bypass the amp itself and just use the speaker. Also have a deluxe 85 with a 12” that may be cool to try, there was a massive difference between the deluxe reverb speaker and that matchless cab which I think comes down to the deluxe reverb being an open back cab and the matchless closed?
@adjustablebias
Жыл бұрын
Both of those sound reasonable, but don't put the speaker output of your vibrochamp into the effects loop of your bass amp if that's what your suggesting - it'll be outputting way too much power - unplug the speaker from the bass amp and plug it in to your vibrochamp - get an extension speaker cable if you need to. Also, make sure to check the ohm rating of your cabinets - the vibrochamp's output transformer expects to see 3.2 ohms - it can probably handle 8, 4 or 2 without to much trouble, but using the wrong rating for too long could damage it. Re: the sound difference, I suspect that mostly comes down to the matchless being loaded with Celestion greenbacks which have a very different sound to the American style speakers in the deluxe reverb, and maybe even microphone positioning, but would have to swap things out to be sure!
@jamesdoctor8079

If you look in the back, the speaker is plugged in with a 1/4 in jack - unplug that and plug it in to your cab with a normal 1/4 in speaker cable of sufficient length. Just make sure the cab is pretty close to the 3.2 ohm impedance of the stock speaker

It does have some hum, especially when plugged into that Matchless cab, but not much. Relative to other '68 Custom amps it's really not bad. Most 65 reissues are made in the USA to higher standards and usually have no background hum at all, even at decently high volumes. It also has a bit of a sympathetic rattle I hear in the room when playing some notes, which could either be something loose or a microphonic tube, which unfortunately is pretty common these days (something in the tube is rattling and creating a matching sound through the speakers).
