FERNGULLY: THE LAST RAINFOREST (1992) is an environmentally focused animated film from an independent studio. It’s also a perfect example of the weird children’s media that sprang forth in the 90s. FernGully is both terrifying and unexpectedly horny. Particularly Tim Curry’s villain, Hexxus. Which is typical of a Tim Curry villain. But not a children’s movie.
This movie also starred the voice talents of Robin Williams, in the role Disney tried to get him to quit.
FernGully is definitely a nostalgia classic. Please don’t remake it.

(They have a bat named Barnabas Collins and I love him. Some people I know are like, “I donate money to all these many and varied wonderful human causes.” And I’m like, “I give money to bats.”)
Also, you can vaguely hear the cars outside in some parts of the video. Which is WEIRD, because I don’t think that’s ever been audible before AND I film in my attic. So I must have accidentally changed some kind of input setting. I did buy a new mic - I’m not using it in this video though - so we’ll see how it goes when I get that set up.
P.S. Did you happen to notice that in the “still good friends” newspaper clip, Wayne Young is like, “Katzenburg totally called me to tell me he absolutely loved FernGully!” And of course I have no proof of this, but knowing what we know now about Disney’s attempts to interfere with the production, I like to think Young was 100% lying just to irritate Katzenberg.
Upcoming Videos:
-A slightly different style video that’s part video essay, part opinion, part movie analysis related to a classic fantasy children’s franchise that keeps getting rebooted and then dying. (Not Percy Jackson.) It’s filmed, but it’s a bit disjointed with some “hot takes” so I’m not completely sold on posting it. I’ll see how I feel after editing, lol.
Self-Indulgent Rambling:
I’d like to get back to doing more frequent videos, but it’s just not possible at the moment. I currently have no set schedule - I don’t think I can even promise one per month, though that’s my goal for myself. I’ll pretty much just be working on videos whenever I can. No plans to stop entirely though! I have a long list of videos that I want to make, mostly just so they exist in the world.
I do have some scripts for things that aren’t necessarily film/TV/books - like weird advertising. And those are often shorter videos with less editing, but they’re such random topics. Sometimes I wonder if I should pick a lane - like nostalgic media - and stick with it. But I like variety too much.
