Interesting report on the Festool Sawstop. I'm an American remodeling carpenter and bought the Sawstop job site saw when my son started working with me four or five years ago. It's a very well made tool and has similar blade height and angle adjustments. I've had two unintentional tripping events, one with wet lumber and one when the saw fence extension was left out and touched the running blade. The safety feature worked . Hopefully never on a finger, but the peace of mind is worth the cost and bother. The jobsite saw cost about $1500. US. I hate to imagine what the Festool will be. They do make wonderful tools though and I've never regretted a purchase! Sawstop also has excellent customer service! For some reason last year the saw would not stay running. The tech rep walked me through a repair. It still wouldn't work. I took the saw to an authorized repair shop and they struggled with it as well. In the end they sent me two new switches and cartridges free of charge. I was without the saw for two weeks and realized how nice it is having to use my old unit in the interim. Best regards on your new purchase, It's a beauty !

Nearly finished the building work, just a kitchen larder unit to finish and then onto the koi pond, as the weather improves (hopefully) Will be making a video about a full sheet crosscut jig, I have been using with my rail saw which has been very helpful with the larger pieces needed for cupboards. Only comment on the saw is when making small adjustments on the fence, I have got into the habbit of giving the far end of the fence a wee shoogle to make sure it settles in the right place when locked down, as I have found it can suffer from sticktion. Other than that still all good and I do have some ideas regarding saw sled but unfinished in my mind so unstarted with my hands. All the best AM.

Thank you for your encouragement, Julian. I'm a bit taller than average and as a consequence am stooped over on anything at 90cm, which I presume is optimal for folks of average height. I made all my countertops 940mm in my surgery and used 970mm for my big workbench, shortly to be retired for a new one. I do, most genuinely, think these little variations make a big difference to comfort when standing for long periods and would encourage folks to experiment themselves, if making their own cabinets and carts My saw is noticeably more comfortable for me to use, on the new cart.

How are you finding the rip fence? I've only just gotten mine, but the fence feels quite stiff. I'm finding some adjustment, it's a bit free-er now, but it still get stuck in the lightly groved table with the glued on bit of laminate that's at the base of the fence. Also find it sticking when transitioning between the extension table and the table saw base. Nowhere near as refined as I'd normally expect from Festool.
@AMBuilds

Hello Jason. Thank you for your question. The main thing I have found is watching that the far end of the fence moves to be square when making small adjustments at the near end. Mine is quite free on it's movement both within the primary table and the extra piece. I did play around with the extensions piece to get it nicely aligned and because it rests on my cart, it has stayed in place.

Sawstops are not available in Europe. Of you want the Sawstop functionality you have to buy this Festool (or a huge panel saw with similar technology). But yes, on a base permanently in a shop a cabinet saw probably makes a bit more sense. You lose a little bit of storage, but heavy saws just run so smoothly.
@AMBuilds

Johannes has beaten me to it OC and is correct. I did look at importing a Saw Stop from Australia whilst awaiting the extended delay for the Festool but the administrative hurdles were not inconsiderable. I'm still unsure as to why Festool didn't include a mitre slot in their saw apart from their desire to be different. I like "different" as a philosophy but only when different means better or at least equivalent. Different is undoubtedly less in this case and although I do have some ideas for jigs, the time pressure of completing other tasks is stopping me finding the time to play with my ideas. Although I have no frame of reference, apart from occasional use of a basic contractor's saw, the Festool does feel very smooth in use.

Hello Nicolas. Thank you for your kind comment. As far as noise is concerned, it is difficult for me to be precise. It is a little less less noisy than my Bosch 12" sliding mitre saw but noisier than say a Domino machine. I usually wear foam ear plugs when using any of my machines and slip on full ear defenders if I'm doing routering. Does that help?

What I also meant to ask, how is the dust collection? It has two intakes going into one hose. What do you think of it?
@AMBuilds
3 жыл бұрын
Hello Hans. I have been happy with the dust extraction but my answer must be tempered by the fact this is my first table saw. I do from time to time measure particulates with a little laser monitor and find it barely changes if I am making full cuts on boards. If I am fine tuning and shaving edges down then I find a modest increase in small particulates and I then turn on my air filter (another video on the channel) I don't worry about a little bit of big sawdust particles accumulating on the table.

Thanks for this honest review. I have been in the states for 20+ years where I had a 3HP PCS . I have now moved back to the UK and looking into getting this saw, but going from a 250KG PCS to the 65KG I am concerned at how 'wobbly' this saw is. did you experience much wobble? many thanks Michael
@AMBuilds
2 жыл бұрын
Hello Michael. This is my first table saw on account of the Saw Stop feature and so have no real frame of reference. For what I was doing I found the supplied legs not particularly useful as positioning of the saw was like a wheelbarrow rather than a full trolley and there was some wobble and flex in the legs. For a peripatetic craftsman, perfect but not for me. With the heavy cart I made, it's very solid with a couple of castors locked. I only have 5x3.5m for my workshop and so need my saw and bench to be moveable to best suit the job in hand and so for me a permanent cabinet saw would not be the solution.

One more question for you...does your blade hold exact 90* to the table after tilting to 45* then returning it? I have the folding cart for my JSS Pro and whenever I take it out of storage on the cart, I have to reset the 90* to table adjustment. I know you never have to tilt your saw on its side, however I'm wondering if just tilting the blade will make the TKS 80 blade go out of adjustment?
@AMBuilds

Hello Derek. I've had no issue with returning to 90 degrees but if I've been doing those cuts for a while sometimes I have to carefully suck out sawdust from nooks and crannies to be able to achieve the indicated and real 45 degree cut. I have both 90 and 45 mini "squares" and it does seem to be pretty good from my hobbyist eye.

@@AMBuilds Yea I just watched it. This is such a shame that the tks 80 doesn't have T tracks.. I still think an in-depth review of the squareness and accuracy of the table would be a nice video on its own (reasoning: I don't even want to think about building a crosscut sled if I don't know the table is worth it). Some very important questions anyone willing to purchase this saw would like to have answers to: 0) How flat is the table overall? And how flat are the other attached components to the table? 1) Is the blade square to the table and to the insert? Is it adjustable? 2) Is the fence square to the table? is it adjustable? 3) If you setup an angle on the table, is it accurate? Can you fine tune it? 4) If you setup an angle on the miter gauge (did you purchase it?), is it accurate? This whole chapter is completely missing from the youtube woodosphere.

@@Maxime-ho9iv I'm just a hobby woodworker, Maxime and this is my first table saw, on account of the Saw Stop feature and so I have no experience or basis of comparison. @@AMBuilds No need for comparison with other saw tables. We are talking about what any saw table should be, i.e. square and flat. It’s absolute, not relative. It’s either square/flat or it’s not. It needs to be delivered as such, or be able to be adjusted as such, precisely. If your saw table is not square (blade relative to the table, fence relative to table, etc.) every single thing you do will be off. Thanks for the very thorough review of the saw. I'm also quite keen on my ten fingers, so the tks 80 seems like the most logic choice for a table saw. I'm only a bit afraid of the coarse adjustment of the blade height. It seems easy to raise and lower the blade in a single turn. I am a table saw novice and the fence works well for me. As you tighten the knob, it finds a spot perpendicular to the front rail and the fence clamp locks it in place. If I am making small fence adjustments, I do give the far end a slight wiggle before locking the fence, to make sure that stiction doesn't stop the far end making a similar small movement. I do sometimes struggle keeping the work against the fence with long workpieces although the use of featherboards has helped and I am considering the Jessem Sotck Guides or alternative. I am sorry not to have more expertise to comment more authoritatively.

Also had the cms ge unit with Ts55r installed under it same rubbish fences so it also went. My main attraction to this tks version is the sawstop but I am put off by the fence which look exactly the same as the cs and cmsge versions . I have recently bought a dewalt flex volt as a temporary measure the fence on the dewalt is so much better and much easier to use. Thank you for your encouragement. I am not sure, is my answer. I presume the outfeed table has the v groove all around ( I haven't opened mine as I doubt I will use it - open to offers!) and like the side table is supported with one of the sticks. I think you might be able to join two tables together but I reckon you would need something better than the stick for stability, although a pair of modest folding trestles would be easy to make and much safer than the sticks. One of the reasons I made my saw cart was to bring the height of the saw to just above my new bench ( in construction) to use that as the outfeed. It is 2.4m long so will handle up to pretty well anything although I can open my garage/workshop at both ends so can pass any length of timber.

Hello Bob. A difficult question for me to answer as this is my first table saw. I cut eight sets of drawer components on it yesterday in 12mm ply and when marking up the pile of pieces for Dominoing this morning, the consistency of the parts was very good and in almost all cases completely smooth to the touch and a maximum variability of I reckon 0.2mm. The blade cuts cleanly, is parallel to the long fence and there is plenty power, three things I have not seen when watching others using cheap contractors' saws. I'm not au fait with your alternative selection but for me, having the Saw Stop safety device comes before anything else.

Thank you MH. The splinter guard, I believe is no 186 in the parts list and part number 10272140. It was only £1.13 plus VAT in 2020. With the throat plate: Is it sitting up at the back - i.e furthest from the switch? That happened to me until I realised that you need to slide the back into place before dropping the front down and clicking it into place. If you review the video at 6.10 you will see the action I use. Trying simply to place it in place means the little mushrooms on the table do not end up in the slots in the throat plate. Is this the issue you have? Please let me know if I have helped you and if not please help me by giving some more details as to the issue you are having and I'll do my best to help you.

@@AMBuilds Thanks for the reply. Their is no splinter guard hole anymore the incert is now solid, you seem to remove the insert different to mine, it has an arrow and you pull it towards you. The problem i have with saw is that the table is not actually flat and it has a dip in the middle and i wondered if you had checked this? I have been in touch with Festool and it looks like it will be returned. 😩 Thanks Mark

@@MH-qx2mj Certainly not something I noticed when setting up my extension table and shop cart. I'm sorry not to have been helpful.

@@MH-qx2mj Did this ever get resolved for you? Our TKS 80 is also not flat. We sent it in for service, but Festool claim it is within their designed spec. The motor is clearly too heavy for the table.

Very nice video. I have also bought the saw. What I am missing is a sled. Do you have plans to build one? It would be great to see.

Thank you. Yes I do, although I am building a rather complex bench at present. After that I hope will be time for the sleds.

I do have a question on operation. How efficient is the dust collection. Table saws generate a great deal of sawdust. cheers!

Hi, Really enjoyed your excellent presentation. I am thinking of investing in this saw. I create serving boards and keepsake boxes. Would you recommend. I have Bosch gts10 xc but it’s fences are not precise So I made a crosscut sled.

I have the SawStop Jobsite Pro, but have been looking at the TKS 80. Is your saw table dead flat? Does it dip near the throat plate and if so, by how much? Thank you for a comprehensive review of your saw and cart. All good information.

We have a TKS 80 and it's not dead flat sadly. We sent it for service, but they claim it is within their designed spec. It's a bit annoying to say the least.

The fence on this saw is just junk. It’s the same as the old cms and precisio why such a good company as festool can’t design a decent fence is beyond me. Something along the line of the dewalt rack and pinion would be a start. The table extensions are a pia to take off and remove. I notice the mafell table saws also have poor fence designs. I can’t understand how such expensive table saws have junk fences.

Thank you Jrichardson6. I've no frame of reference to compare and comment on fences but I do take the side table off occasionally, on my cart and find that fairly easy to remove and drop back into place. It is a saw designed for the peripatetic worker and I've morphed it into a pseudo cabinet saw and it mostly works for me, now I've got used to it's peculiarities and most importantly still have all my digits!

I like your self made cart very inventive. Have you tried the extension wings for the kapex… what a pfaff putting those on and off lol surely festool could design a quick latch on affair instead of expecting the likes of us to fiddle around underneath the table trying to get a metal tab to engage with a metal surface that is ambiguous in its execution 😹

Festool had literally 250 years of tablesaw history to draw from and THAT is what they came up with?

You can spend £4,000 on a table saw but not a few hundred on decent microphone?

I think your critique and solutions ought to be of utmost interest to Festool et als.
I'm a professional cabinetmaker, and I will tell you there is no excuse for the blade guard lifting off center on 45 degree rips, just as there no excuse for the Festool Kapex mitre saw not able to cut oversized crown mould on the flat at 33 & 31 degree mitre and compound angles, For $1500.00. Festool products are absurdly priced and not worth the money
