Just rewatched the film to see what I thought about the theory that Freddy was intended to be an innocent victim of an angry mob. The dude made a knife glove, he for sure wasn't innocent. Rather, he wasn't written to be a secretly innocent character. Rather, my theory is that Freddy Kreuger was never a real person and the story about a real life Freddy Kreuger was a fake backstory as part of the nightmare. At the end of the film Nancy seems to save herself by telling herself that Freddy was never real and it was all a nightmare. She seemingly wakes up and all her friends and family are still alive, but then Freddy gets the mom and possesses the car with Nancy and her friends inside. Nancy was in a nightmare the whole time. There was never a real Freddy, he was always part of Nancy's imagination. Her teacher even reveals this plot point when she's talking about how some things you see aren't real and there's a deep corruption in the heart of mankind.

Interesting theory, but a bit of a stretch. The parents can feel guilty for killing Freddy regardless of his guilt or innocence because their actions as a bloodthirsty mob showed a darkness within themselves they were not aware of, that they never thought they would do in their idyllic little town. Like soldiers who kill the enemy, it’s a form of PTSD that they have to reconcile somehow, and most do so in a negative way, be it alcohol, drugs, or illicit relationships among other things. Nancy’s mom was most surely the leader of the mob, and considering her husband was a police officer, he most likely kept it out of notice for the police. The logic of Freddy being all “I was innocent of killing all those kids, and to prove it I’m going to kill kids” makes less sense than the remake’s initial reason that he was killing kids as revenge for telling lies about him, which is incredibly dark and kinda sucks that the film didn’t have the guts to stick with that. Interesting about the little girls and good eye on the jump ropes in the sequel. However, Freddy uses Tina’s image throughout the first film to draw out and creep out Nancy, so that seems to support the notion that the little girls are his victims that he uses to keep him in the minds of his target.

My theory: Nancy’s mother was also being stalked by Freddy. We establish later in the movie that Nancy’s mother keeps Freddy Krueger his gloves after she exposes the truth about him, but we also discovered at Nancy’s mother is an alcoholic. Alcohol affects our sleep in such a way that dreams are cut off. There are several stages of sleep that we go through during the night, and the one where we dream is called REM ( Rapid Eye Movement) Sleep. Nancy’s Mother’s alcoholism may in fact be her defense to keep Freddy from killing her, which makes the moment when she slaps Nancy for attacking her alcoholism more intense. The only way Freddy could kill her was if she stopped drinking, which she announces at the ending, to which Freddy pulls her into the door killing her. You may say that she died before when Freddy pulls her into her bed and she disappears, but this is because Nancy had pulled Freddy out of the dream world where he could finally get revenge on the mother who killed him and buried his weapon of choice. What do you think?

‘FREDDYS REVENGE’ is an underrated flick. It actually is a decent sequel and is the last serious Freddy. The second one always made a lot of sense and it was always clear that Freddy was innocent. It was always a powerful message of how lynch mob mentality isn’t always a good thing. When people have an idea in the head of someone - even when it goes against facts it leads to true horror. Craven was a clever writer and more than a typical exploitation filmmaker - where he got his first opportunity. This is a great video - highlighting how the second film actually is not a cash grab and adds to the backstory left behind in the first film.

I have one answer within the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. The very first episode of Freddy's Nightmares. He was not coming back for retribution. This is also present in the Marvel comics. He actually found the killing of innocent people sexually arousing. He may have gotten in touch with demons during life, but we will never know. What happened was, when he was acquitted, he got pissed. And it was all because the policeman who arrested him did not read him his rights. He even threatened the cop with stalking and, possibly, killing his daughters. The cop then lit Freddy up, to which Freddy responds "I'm free! I'll be back!" He then goes on to terrorize Springwood, starting his killings as a dream demon with the cop who killed him. So, if we look past the films, which did use some footage from the television series, it's not revenge. It's purely enjoyment on his end. Plus, the coach was after his host. Of course he would protect the one who is to facilitate his return.
@nspcrazy1122

I feel like Freddy is definitely evil, but also logical to a degree. I think his inability to handle negative stimuli causes him to lash out & overreact to problems. How did he handle his foster father abusing him? He murderred him. Perhaps Freddy grew attracted to the neighborhood kids (I think I recall him being into boys as well.) because he wanted to recapture his adolescent innocence that his foster father stole from him. Ofcourse, the kids were understandably perturbed by his evil demeanor & rejected his advances. Freddy, unable to process this, 'attack', forced himself on them (or maybe just molested them, depending on how evil you think he is). When they threatened to tell on him, he felt he had no choice but to kill them. It's possible that the first kill is an accident & once he lost that part of his humanity, he no longer had any objections to killing them to protect himself. When Loretta found out about this, him killing her is probably not out of self-protection, as she had no intention of turning him in. By this point, he likely became a sadist, as getting revenge on his enemies became the only thing to bring him joy. He also might not have believed her, since he was never given any reason to trust anyone. Obviously, the disappearring kids & the knowledge that they often hung around Freddy led to the suspicion of him killing them. He didn't see himself as guilty & tried to plead for his life. When they killed him anyway, needlessly brutal at that, he was infuriated when he regained consciousness. He vowed the ultimate revenge: the psychological torture & murder of their children. From this point on, when he molests his victims, lt is not out of a need to recapture his innocence. It is solely out of revenge, hatred & spite. Perhaps he enjoys lt somewhat, but lf molest was still his goal, then he would do so much more often. The more he is, 'wronged', the worse he treats his victims. That's why the kills start off so tame. By the time he died, he lost any semblance of his humanity & became a monster.
@DesMuttYS

So, we can't use the second movie on to prove that Freddy Krueger is a child killer, because Wes Craven wasn't fully and directly involved in them (with the exception of New Nightmare which has no real connection to the others on this subject matter), even though he did help write the story for three, BUT the theorist can use the second movie to support their theory about Freddy being innocent, even though Craven had no involvement, and how it went was what got him to come back and at least have some influence in the third one? That means that you are plainly and bluntly doing the very thing you said not to in order to support the conclusion. Additionally, if you are going to use only one sequel to support or detract from a theory, it should be the third since -- again -- Craven had involvement with that. It very much skews the thinking to it.

I thought they were going to take this angle in the remake. When the parents were chasing him down he screamed "I didn't do anything!" with such conviction that I was sure they were going to have him be innocent. It's a great idea. It would be a critique of how our society is so damn quick to judge and how we feel like an eye for an eye will end crime forever. Freddy is a child murderer, but lets be honest, how many cheer for him the entire time? Just me? Okay. Honestly though I found Freddy more enjoyable as a character than any of the other characters, I attribute that to Mr. Englund and his amazing portrayal of the character.

Why are we having this debate? He’s stayed on multiple times that he killed the children. Freddy vs Jason opening scene. Different writers from the 1st NOES but same person. Freddy’s dead explains that the dream demons offered him immortality because he was such a twisted being. Also he’s genes. Son on a 100 maniacs 😕

OR.... what if the girls we see are/were originally intended to be Freddy's little girls?? I think that would be an interesting point to have in a 3rd origins story for a new Freddy background and franchise movies.... a good father, gets his soul corrupted by revenge against the one(s) who either raped and or murdered his children?? If anyone here works for the company that owns the NIGHTMARE licence rights, get on this now.

With respect to the originals. The remake set a better tone of tension and told a more interesting story. It was the character of freddy being too iconic that made it hard to watch. In addition the remake is the only film that even considers he may be innocent and the parents got it wrong.

@@johntoye6602 that's not true. The original is vague as to whether he's innocent or not, it even leans towards the fact that he is which is why Nancy's mom has so much guilt about it and becomes an alcoholic

Honestly, I’m more willing to believe that Krueger hated the coach enough to kill him, rather than believe that Krueger just wanted vengeance as an innocent man. Krueger didn’t seem to be a pedophile (after all, why have special hellish torture for someone just like him), he seemed more like someone who was just good at killing. Killing kids just seemed like a better way to make those who killed him suffer, rather than just let them suffer fast by killing them straight, something that was a thing even when Krueger was alive. The coach was a whole different breed of sicko, one that Krueger knew like the back of his gloved hand, so when the opportunity to kill the coach arose, Krueger gave him special torture cause he truly hated the coach. Krueger wanted vengeance against his bullies (however it is still horrific and terrible, don’t get me wrong), while the coach was just sick. I feel that’s a bit more realistic than Krueger just avenging spirits of young girls, or just being innocent and killing in death. I think his homocidal tendencies just carried into the afterlife, as well as his motives. Vengeance against his bullies, and rage.

Have you thought the Coach was the one doing the crimes Freddy died for since he was supposed to be a Child Molester and the Coach was profiled as a Child Molester.
@Studio215official

I always thought this theory was possible but from this video it clarifies my theory that the real child killer was coach snyder and the parents killed the wrong person. Not to mention the thepry of the girls in white makes more sense that he would be avenging them seeing as how they nevwr wre represented as "covered in blood" or mutilated. They always appear clean and innocent children who are working with freddy.

If Freddy was innocent, what if Coach Snyder was the real killer. This would explain Snyder's sadistic death. Think about he's attracted to underage kids & is kinky. He easily fits the profile of the killer. Think about it would it be easier for a respected teacher or a creepy janitor to lure victims. Think about it Freddy is the perfect stereotype of the creepy adult that kids are scared of. I'm referring to Freddy before he died, who we see in flashbacks during several movies. Wes Craven himself said the inspiration for Freddy was creepy man that scared him as a child. Think about it if what sane child wouldn't run away screaming if Freddy tries to lure them.

The biggest clue in Freddy's defense is that since his death, he's never molested anyone like that. He terrorizes and slays, but never gets really pervy. Yeah, a couple times he did some creepy stuff, but that was to scare the victim, not to gratify himself. Freddy is essentially a spirit of vengeance. You could argue, because he is granted life, of a sorts, after death, on Earth, that he is here because God saw to it that he return. God allows him his revenge, which is why he can never be fully stopped until his vengeance is complete.

what if Freddy died for the coach from no.2's crimes? we know the coach was a child molester, has a link to freddy somehow, but we didnt see him at the murder. what if freddy was simply a better fit for what people thought a child molester looked like and the real one was a whitebread, decent looking, active and respected member of society who killed those 4 girls in white? i imagine being lynched for the assumption you are a killer would make any deal a demon offered you look a lot better. i can imagine a really compelling story around what was once an innocent man bound to a contract they did not understand and forced to become that which they were accused of.

Side note: the remake was originally supposed to float the argument that Freddy was innocent. This is based on the Daycare molestation scares of the 80's and 90's where parents across the country spread a panic that kids were being abused at daycare and it turned out that child therapists and parents were coaching children into false testimony. All of the evidence in the early screening I watched backed this, then the third act climax reveals a box filled with evidence that none of the other kids were molested but the main character was including photos and such. My response was: "Seriously, movie, pick a side" so they removed the mystery from the final film and had Freddy just straight be a pedo like in the original. The Green Mile is basically Freddy Krueger except Freddy Kreuger is Jesus, so I always found it funny that they couldn't play with the formula to have a vengeful innocent victim turn into a monster a la Candyman.

Never got why in the remake they took out the serial killing aspect in his backstory and just made a straight up child molester as he wouldn’t be a killer until after his death. Which I thought was fucking stupid. It’s like come on he was The Springwood Slasher who went after these kids, he wasn’t their lovable creepy gardener, he was just an evil sick bastard on the loose in Springwood. Sure the child molester thing is not the most enjoyable part of the character definitely not a favorite not saying murder is anymore better than rape but damn they could of just made him both blatantly then in the remake. Plus it defines who Freddy Krueger truly is which is a sadistic evil serial killer. The original movie he wasn’t a child molester which was changed by Wes Craven to a child killer though they’re still hints of him being one in the original and the whole series.

A deleted scene reveals that Freddy had killed one of Nancy's siblings. While you can still argue as to whether or not Fred Kruger was the killer, Nancy's mom believed he was and the loss of a child to a child molesting murderer is more than enough to send a mother into alcoholism and that's on too of the fact that she murdered a dude herself.

I didn't like the remake for a lot of reasons, first no Robert Englund, second they used a lot of CGI in the movie, and what irked me most was that they used established actors, while the original had a young Johnny Depp (in his first movie ever) and other unknown actors, the remake had Kellan Lutz and Rooney Mara (two big actors) The only thing it had going for it was Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy.

Was Freddy a Pedophile/murderer? YES Was He guilty of killing the children that he arrested for ? Maybe not. Could be still be guilty of crimes he wasn't accused of? YES. Could he be innocent of the specific murders he was charged with? Yes. This is what Wes Craven has said about Freddy. He was found Innocent of specific murders of children. He was guilty of child molestation/murder of other children never discovered/found however. Freddy wanted Revenge because he knew things others where guilty of that others killed him for...

This is an interesting theory, well-argued. I just have one problem: If Freddy was innocent, why is he presented consistently (from the very first film) as so demented and sadistic? He seems to enjoy killing his victims, toying with them as he does it and laughing all the way. Contrast it with a fairly straightforward revenge-beyond-the-grave film--"Candyman." There's clearly a difference.
