They're real. I like the theory, but all of the cutting back and forth between girls in the cave would make Sarah have to be omnipresent. Mass hysteria? If the group doesn't know Sarah is on the assumed anti psychotics and she keeps insisting she sees things in the dark and the others start panicking due to Sarah's panic and the overall situation... @@Fickji That's an interesting take, and for that particular scene, it works. Definitely something to think about. Even though I don't think the video in this theory quite holds together, just the fact that it is plausible makes me love this movie even more. While I don't think I could ever completely get down with the "Sarah did all of it" theory, I have always felt like the monsters had this metaphysical feel, like they were the manifestations of the unknown secrets between Sarah and Juno. Yeah, honestly, outside of a few cool gore moments, I could have done without the sequel. Nice catch with the Lovecraft reference! Also reminds me of the X-Files episode, Detour, where Mulder theorizes the monsters are the evolved descendents of one of de Soto's scouting parties.

When Holly breaks her leg, Sarah is distracted by a sound, she had heard the crawlers' noises before, but in that scene the sound is clearly a child's laughter, not a crawler. So there's definetly something wrong with her head. I like to think that the crawlers are "real" in the story, but the whole journey in the cave and the monsters stand for Sarah's depression that ends up bringing her in a dark place and alienating her from others because she can't let her dead daughter go.

I feel like this is kind of a problematic interpretation, the idea that being laden with PTSD and grief can turn anyone into a psychotic killer being a pretty familiar (and tired) rehash of mental health stigma. Problems with the theory: 1) What's killing the wildlife near the cave entrance? By the wounds, it ain't hunters. Seeing the main character is not insane yet, this is considered "reality." 2) The creatures being blind has ZERO significance to the story. It is common for cave-dwelling creatures to be blind in no-light areas; this is a biological fact. There are blind fish, crustaceans, insects, bats, etc. It being representative of some manifestation that she was blind to Juno and her husband literally gets lost in actual physical reality. 3) The different women representing things that the main character lost makes no sense. Why use these women to represent anything, if she's gone batty (pardon the pun) in the beginning of the chaos? They are a writing device used to provided different viewpoints and opinions into the story so as to avoid character redundancy. 4) If the candles represent death, then you cannot draw a parallel between the main character losing her mind and accepting her fate. The candle only represents that she never makes it out after that. She's literally trapped down there with cannibal-oids, who ALSO can't get out., because the one and only entrance and exit is caved-in. 5) If it is the main character killing people off, then there is literally no reason for the mercy-killing. Plus, there is no driving motivation to kill off Bet when the main character still has an emotional attachment to her. It would be like revisiting the loss of her family once more. 6) If I recall correctly, other people see the faces as well during the film, and attacks occur while the main character is in other parts of the cave (I could be wrong on this). 7) This theory assumes that five others characters are too stupid to figure out that the main character is on a killing spree. it also assumes that they choose to do nothing about it except try to hide. It also assumes that the main character is quite capable of getting around in utter pitch black...while utterly insane. I think the title DOES represent a descent into madness, but I think it is more plausible at the end of the movie, rather than the beginning. I also think that's what drove the change in the ending from the European version to the US version. They probably had some data telling them that no one got the significance of the candles (especially given how subtle the number changed from one scene to the next), so they re-cut an new ending that made the point of the movie more clear. There was probably a business decision to re-cut an new ending, because someone saw it is a movie viable for a franchise. Can't do that if the creepy-crawling things and now forever sealed off from the rest of the world by a pile of stone. Recut an ending with an alternate entrance, make the lone survivor a basket-case, and BAM: a path to a sequel.

No matter if it was different directors or actors or whatever, unless the other Descent movies have another name then they are canon, deal with it. No matter what fans say or theorize, what is written in the movies, how the characters act, etc is completely up to the movie and studio crew. This theory is compelling and maybe explains the first movie, not every movie in a series needs to connect to the others, or specifically not every aspect of a film series needs to connect so if Descent 2 takes place in the same area or same cave it is STILL a different story with different characters and different narrative/story. Remember Halloween 3: Season of the Witch? That is canon, no matter what people think about it, or the later JAWS movies, or Leprechaun series, or the newer Star Wars, they are all canon because the studio and film crew says they are, deal with it or deny reality.

This feels less like an interpretation and more like a reverse engineered outline. What's being discussed here is framed as a theory - an attempt to decode a puzzle that the movie supposedly presents, but that takes all the power out of the metaphor. This would be like positing that the zombies in Dawn of the Dead aren't a thematic parallel to mindless consumerism, but a literal product of it. I do really like your breakdown of what each character represents in relation to Sarah. This analysis would be very much at home in a review about why this movie works so well. The characters are written specifically to have unique connections to the main themes of loss and catharsis. This is a fundamental technique of storytelling and it is applied really well in The Descent, but recognizing this does not imply any narrative tomfoolery. Instead, it strengthens the metaphor for the compounded losses that can be suffered at the hands of trauma-induced isolation. As you said: her sexuality, innocence, responsibility, sense of adventure and support system are casualties of the catastrophe that cost her her husband and child and the resulting pain and sadness that trapped all of those disparate parts to be killed off one by one by the blind, stupid agents of self destruction and negative emotions that live inside the cavernous gauntlet of her fractured soul................. See? Rob dark stories of their subtlety and things tend to go all "Dracar Noir" pretty quick. Anyway, I feel like this video's train of thought would be way better served if you're point was "Here's why you're right to like the Descent" as opposed to "Here's why you're wrong about it."

What about the colour of Sarah's eyes? Normally blue, they are bright green in the close-up shown, then a reddish-brown when the shot changes back to her in the cave.

I didn't know The Descent had a sequel. I'm not surprised tho - "because, these days, you got to have a sequel"

You actually don't even need to dismiss the sequel with this theory, because it could technically still fit with the sequel as well, although the end could possibly take a little time to work through.

I love this movie. The claustrophobic sense justs heightens everything, the fear is already there and then you add the monsters. Well acted, great cinematography and scary environment. I prefer not examining the possible theories too much and just enjoy the horror

This demon is real. They have blocked off caves cause of people went missing and there is video of the demon on another video. It's so serious you enter at your own risk.

Just noticed that That Film Theory's logo at first looks like popcorn in a popcorn bucket, but it can also look like a brain in a popcorn bucket, which would mean that their site is as much about feeding your brain as it is about film study.

It is an interesting theory, except that Beth is the only person that Sarah killed. If I remember correctly, she stabbed Juno in the leg/thigh because she wanted the crawlers to kill her. To be honest, I thought for sure you were going to spin this “the crawlers weren’t the bad guys” into a take about how the women were the bad guys. They invaded the crawler’s home and then were hurt and killed by the women. Okay, especially Sarah. After the Beth’s mercy killing, Sarah killed a female crawler and then the female’s mate. Wasn’t there also a “child” crawler? So, yes, Sarah is the biggest killer, but of killing the crawlers. Have you seen this movie with the cast commentary on? It’s very funny. They have a wicked sense of humor, including the one who played Holly.

Wait, so...what happened then? Did Sarah hallucinate everything, her friends and expedition included or did she only hallucinate the crawlers and kill her friends in the cave as she went mad?

Have none of you people read any of the books that ironically have the same name and are also about cannibalistic humanoid underground dwellers? They were written by Jeff Long. Absolutely no mention in the credits. Not even a"Inspired by".

Sorry, but sequels destroy all these kind of film theories. Creator and Director etc. of an entry in a franchise means nothing. It would be like going to the Godzilla Showa era and taking out a movie because Ishiro Honda didn't direct it. The only movie in the Godzilla franchise that didn't actually happen was Godzilla's Revenge (events on Monster Island happened in the protagonist's mind). Movies usually let you know if the events actually didn't happen. It's an ironic twist at the end of the movie.

Cool theory. I always thought that they had all turned on each other, seeing each other as monsters. But even if the creatures were real, it's still a great film.

I don't want to know what happened in the Descent and find arguing about it pointless. All the theories (the film's Sarah's dying dream, Sarah's the real murderer, cannibals murdered the women) are all terrifying. I think it's also possible the women murdered each other. There was a split between Juno and Sarah with Beth on Sarah's side and Juno was hostile to Holly when the women descended into the cave. So it's possible Juno got Sam and Rebecca to join her and the Juno faction (her + Sam + Rebecca) attacked the Sarah faction (her + Beth + Holly) at which point Sarah fought back. The crawlers represent how the Juno and Sarah factions perceived the other side.

Yea this theory is completely busted. Especially since Juno is still alive and stuck in a the cavern in the 2nd one, plus Sara goes back in the cave because of the cop and psychologist. They also told her it was in her head until they got down there and saw the monsters for their selfs

I do love this movie and it's sequel. It's dark, and I would love to hear it you have a mirrored story for This. Sarah's madness is still maintained whether or not she gets out but the path to the cave is harder without Sarah. Let me know if you check It and decide whether or not the individual is enough to get them there anyway Thank you for sharing your perspective

I choose to believe that the crawlers are real. Just because i find it more entertaining that way. Yep psychological crap happening is entertaining too, but. Well. I like monsters. And as long as the theory goes unconfirmed, i have a choice what to believe. That's the fun thing about film theories. For everyone, there is a choice on which one mindset to watch the movie with. And, now having heard this one, i have a feeling i'd like to see the movie again. More depth to it when i have to ponder if they exist or not.

i like the film to be ambiguous, leaving it for you to decide which is the film you are watching, but i prefer this theory that Sarah is the true killer. the director did discuss this possibility on the dvd commentary, along with the six candle cake being a mistake and i was disappointed that the sequel was just another creature feature.

The sequel has such a terribly stupid ending that I consider it dying visions mixed with some writer's fever dreams after eating a large meatball sub and binge-watching a bunch of "twist" slasher films.
