Nah there was clearly some rush in FFIX. The clearest example is how certain story arcs just seem to vanish into thin air, most egregiously Freya's, where Fratley just vanishes shortly after his introduction near the start of disc 2 and neither he nor Freya's story with him progresses or is really touched on until one of the epilogue scenes leaving what happened to Fratley to make him lose his memory or where he was entirely unexplained and robbing Freya of some much needed story relevance in the later potions of the game. I still love FFIX above all other FF's and it is a testament to the quality of the game that Freya is still among my favorite characters in spite of how much she vanishes from the plot, but there is no question in my mind that certain plotlines were never really finished.

Yet FF9 is probably the only game where I felt most involved in. After escaping the forest dungeon, and coming to the very first town outside, both the music and its visuals lifted all that tension I had built up. This game is still one of my favorites in the mainline FF franchise. And the only reason I managed to get to know FF9 was because of one distinct factor: the throwback visuals. It had elements that is reminiscent of old and past FF games. It's a shame that none of the newer FF games appealed to me. But it doesn't look like I'm missing much, as I've found other titles that has my attention.

In short, nothing in FFX really hooked me. Spira was beautiful, but it felt empty, fake. SO, I'd say FFIX have better characters if I had to answer your question, I suppose My point was about FFX's really divisive nature (probably second to FFVIII as the most divisive Final Fantasy. Doing both really good things (Blitzball) and really bad things (Blitzball, again) and the fact FFX is the begining of a new era, after FFIX perfected the classic formula), trying to find a new direction for the franchise. @@shytendeakatamanoir9740 dude 10 is not even close to the most divisive XD 8, 15 and especially 13 have waaay more fanboys and haters. i think the whole "empty" feeling you mention (wich i did notice too) is because the newer FF have less and less actual towns and cities that feel lived in (exept 12, wich has one of the best worlds IMO) and thus feel devoid of people. 10 had luca and besaid, maybe kilika if you feel generous, 13 had none (and it's, well, a hallway), 15 has like 2 (and the clones in those towns don't help make it feel more realistic). the earlier ones had way more. 9 had alexandria, treno, lindblum, bran bal (if you count it), cleyra, dali, conde petie and maybe daguerreo. and all of those are really distinct, like conde petie, it's got a mexican feeling to it, while linblum is more industrialized and scy-fantasy, whlie alexandria is more classic fantasy and treno is the medieval equivalent of las vegas.

I can hardly describe my love for this game. Other than a handful of spin-offs, I have played every Final Fantasy back to back, many mutiple times over. But when I think of "Final Fantasy", IX comes to mind, immediately. It's a grand summary of everything the series represents, and if you take away all that FFesque narrative flavor, it's still such a damn fun game. The art is incredibly charming, and the music... goodness gracious. Nobuo Uematsu, everybody. I could keep typing for hours about every aspect of the game, but seriously... this game was a defining point of my life. I played I, II, VI and VII before IX, but none made me fall in love with the game quite like that (VI came pretty close, though, and X, afterwards, almost got there too). Not to mention synthesis shops also being a great use for your old stuff. Your point about the AP system is exactly why I found FFIX the most addicting to play out of FF7-10! I hadn't realized that it's really what makes the gameplay loop so much more interesting for me... I also like that having abilities tied to specific equipment that can only be used by certain characters helped me feel more like I was training my favorite party members to get better at what they did, rather than leveling up something like materia to be used to customize them more. Overall those elements really helped reinforce how wonderful and cohesive the characters, story and gameplay all were in IX.

The problems I had with 9s pacing were that some main characters didn't have a lot of story around them. Also you aren't given full control of your party until the game is wrapping up.

I loved traveling the world of Gaia, looking for different monsters to eat and excited to see what spell I would learn. It's much better than waiting to get hit to learn these skills, especially in games like FFTA where you have to do an absurd setup just for an enemy to cast White Wind on your Blue Mage. Love this video and you're right about the game loop - by putting abilities and skills in equipment and armor, you're pretty much tweaking the same gameplay little by little adding more and more to the characters appeal and battle mechanics. I'm not sure if this was mentioned already in the comments, but another underrated system they used for the pacing of the game is the active time events (ATE). The system made the game feel like time was still moving all around you and created these short mini stories along the main story. I thought that was unique idea considering that many of classic RPG games would never give you that option like the ATE system. Either they gave you the event as you progress or you backtrack to initiate an event. That's why i think the ATE help with the pacing of the story.

I'm subscribing and will be coming back for more. Thanks for your perspectives and in depth analyses, keep up the good work.

Thanks, man! This channel is worked on by two people and we've both been huge FF fans for most of our lives. My own introduction to the series was with X and that and IX are my favorites hands down but I appreciate most of the series. Even XIII despite how critical I've been with it.

It's crazy how good the pacing is in FF9. They keep throwing FMVs, small dungeons, minigames, and different distinct areas at you one after another, shepherding you from one to the next. The first time it slows down and gives the player a chance to explore is pretty much right after you get out of Lindblum and go to pick up Quina.

The *HELL?!?!?* FF9 sold worse than 12? THIS IS HERESY! ... Or maybe that's just because the PS2 sold more than the PSX?
@kabiebebe2332

It's because of the timing of its release. FF9 was released very close to when the PS2 dropped. So any hype FF9 could have generated was instantly forgotten for the new console. If there was an extra year between FF9 and PS2 it almost certainly would have sold another million or two copies at least.

Chris N17 And another reason why I called IX ‘underrated’. Along with ‘meh’ reviews of VIII, the practically immediate X and eventually X-2 and just the quick rise of PS2 just gave the poor game the worst luck. Which sucks, because IX is my favorite.

This game's soundtrack gets me everytime. Literally as soon as the video ended I was starting to get the feels from the music. That's what made this game enter my top 3 videogames OF ALL TIME. And I barely first played it this year, in January. Already beat it 3 times and 100% it on steam. Masterpiece of a game. It's not perfect and I do have some gripes, but overall it's fantastic and I would recommend it to anyone that doesn't hate turn based combat.

After a minute and a half i clicked the like button for pointing the best things of ff9. Best story, best narrative(even out of every jrpgs until now) and the BEST soundtrack out of every ff game. My favorite ff even back in 2000 where many people thought bad of this game and after many years acknowledged it. Seriously, this game is brightest gem among gems.

I will say without a single hint of irony or doubt that this game is the best FF of all time, it is simply perfect. And the fact that it still is a good looking game to this day(With an HD facelift) is a testament to its quality. I went back to the Ps1 era this week out of boredom, couldn't get into ff7, couldn't even bring myself to start ff8, but 9... 9 fucking sucked me in and kept me in my chair for 3 days straight, for a 20 year old game its gameplay is addictively rewarding and its story can make a grown man cry. I love this game with all my heart and I would pay hundreds of dollars for a remake if they ever make one.

i rarely comment, but this video has strong argument, FF IX not my first game into the franchise (actually VII is) but it has special place in my heart and childhood memory, the story is incredible many conflict introduce, at first you tough its simple story line, but whe you progress you feel deep with character development. still play it to this day from emulator to emulator and cannt remember how many times i finished this game, now i play it at epsxe android with crt shading. thanks square soft for this incredible memory

I've always said myself actually that FF9 is the overall best because of how well its pieces all fit together. Not only are those parts all above average on their own, but they've also been put together so well and presented excellently its hard not to love. Especially with how much homage it plays to its origins. It also has one of the best optional bosses in Jrpgs, albeit a pain to get to with how finicky the chocobo minigame could be at times. And yeah, easily one of if not the best soundtrack Uematsu composed, on top of it fitting the greater puzzle just as well as all the other components. My only complaint is that we didn't get a bit more, like with Freya and Amarant. But at the same time I do wonder if the strict 18 month dev time limit Square imposed during that era is part of what pushed the team to honest masterpiece we received. You've got things like Xenogears notorious "Disc 2" on one hand, but then you've got FF13 and FF15 on the other, showing that dev time allotments don't inherently make for a better game. There's much more to it than one window of creation obviously, but it's nonetheless a interesting aspect to look upon.

This is the final fantasy I want a remake of. The HD version is nice for new comers and makes it look like what I remember, but has some UI issues that leave it wanting a little. I really hope that the Final Fantasy VII Remake does well so Square will consider remaking more FF games, especially this one

You might want to look into the PC mods. There's one that adds back in analogue support, changes the UI so it's more similar to the older one, and adds AI up-scaled backgrounds which look great.

Great video even if the title is not a perfect fit. what we have here is most of all a good retrospective of what ff and square(soft) were at the time. What they did in those 4 years, from 7 to 9 was really inpressive. I feel ff9, like Vagrant story, were as you say buried by a hardware cycle. Should things have been different and their influence and sales numbers would be much greater. Fortunately both games some recognition on these last few years.

Final Fantasy 9 will always be my favorite final fantasy because it just felt so fantastical. I really felt the “fantasy” half of the series title. So many new species and locations that were never again touched on. The motivations of characters felt good and I made me want to keep playing again and again. It felt alive in a way I’ve never known games could be. Also Chocobo Hot and Cold is the best side quest mini game and that’s a ship I will go down with! Sure other games have their own things that make them great but for me, nothing gets as good as 9.

Such an underrated game. The skill/ability system is awesome. I love that you can permanently learn the skills after getting enough AP with them equipped. It's really cool. I also really love the visual style for the game; I have a FF9 art book and it's great. I also think that the graphics of FF9 are vastly superior to 7 and 8, even though all three were made for the same console. That said, I think I might break it out again sometime soon and give it another go.

I'm surprised you didn't go into more depth about the character development in this game. It's one of my favourite games of all time, for that one reason. I keep thinking about the characters, how Steiner questions himself and his undying loyalty and it's value. Vivi doubts his existence and role in life. They are all so brilliantly interesting and unique. Eiko and her intense loneliness! Powerful stuff to add onto an already epic game.

you know you have a great game when you can re-play the game and still find joy in it several times. based on experience, i love the cast of 8 and the magic system of 7 more than 9, but in terms of story and pacing as the video points out, 9 is definitely the best and you wont tire out re-playing it. i have several save files on 7 stuck around the middle where the story gets a bit dull(somewhere along you get lost in a tundra) and 8 right around where you get your first mission to timber. they're great but they somewhat have dull moments. for 9, the distance between destinations is just right, the amount of battles are just right, no stressing out on leveling your materia for too long, and no stressing out on trying to stay low level(cause your enemies level with you).

This is certainly one of the better ones, and I have tons of nostalgia for it as I played it first. Only 2 downsides for me: the speed Stat being irrelevant( outside of thievery and the atb wait speedrun trick) and Beatrix in general, as she truly stands out as a shallow, fan fiction-y character in a FF with tons of cool characters. But it's still really awesome, and imho one of the most challenging FF outside of tactics
