Von Willebrand’s Disorder (VWD) is the most common inherited bleeding condition in which the blood does not clot properly.(1) Despite affecting an estimated 4,900 people in Ireland, only around one third of people living with VWD have received a diagnosis.(2)
In this video from the Finding Von Willebrand campaign, agricultural mechanic Donal McCann speaks about the impact of von Willebrand’s disorder (VWD) on his life.
Donal looks back on his childhood with VWD and describes how he was first treated for VWD as an infant. Recounting how he lost many schooldays to bleeds and how his social life was often curtailed, he explains the value of seeking medical assistance.
Now a father himself, Donal outlines his concerns around the time of his daughter’s birth due to the hereditary bleeding disorder. Donal explains that although bleeding symptoms are often overlooked in men, they are just as likely to inherit this bleeding disorder. He encourages anyone experiencing frequent, excessive bleeding to seek help.
Symptoms of von Willebrand’s disorder include:(1)
✓ frequent nose bleeds
✓ easy bruising
✓ excessive bleeding from an injury or after dental work
✓ Or in women also heavy menstrual bleeding
Von Willebrand’s disorder is treatable once diagnosed. Speak to your GP if you are experiencing a combination of these symptoms or repeated bleeding issues.
